Electrolysis and Choose and Book for Oculoplastics
We are launching Choose and Book for Oculoplastics on 21st May at Melton.
The clinics will be week 1 and 3 at Melton and will start regularly from August.
A new Electrolysis machine was recently purchased for use at Melton and therefore any eyelashes problems can also be treated permanently at Melton Hospital. Previously patients had to have recurrent epilation.
Antonella Berry-Brincat, Locum Consultant
Staffing Changes
Dr Joy Osbourn and Dr Ian Cracknell both retired in April 2015.
We would like to wish them both very long, happy and peaceful
retirements.
Dr WM Turner has resigned from his post as the Dermatology
GPWSI at Hinckley Hospital. We would like to thank him for his
hard work and wish him well for the future.
Alison Hessey, currently acting Lead Nurse with the Alliance,
will be starting her new role as Matron for the Alliance on June
15th. The role of Lead Nurse will be taken by Nichola Crust.
We would like to wish both nurses the very best in their new
roles.

Rowena Jessiman attains Leadership Academy Award
We recently asked Rowena Jessiman to tell us about how she came to be the proud possessor of the NHS Leadership Academy Award. Rowena has made light of the hard work but we want to congratulate her anyway…
Rowena said ‘The journey started way back in October 2013 when I started the Mary Seacole Program through the NHS Leadership Academy and have been supported by both DCHS and the Alliance in order to attain this qualification.
It’s is a fully accredited programme leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership in which the study was a combination of face-to-face and online learning designed to fit around my schedule, though at times it was a tight schedule. The online learning part was completed through the Open University with the face to face days either in Nottingham or Loughborough for the cohort I was grouped in.
I found it to be a very interesting course which covered a variety of topics in 9 modules. It introduced me to new theories, concepts and modules which will be invaluable in the future. You are able to work through the modules at your own pace to a certain extent but there were strict deadlines for the assignments of which there were 5 in all. I would recommend this course to anyone with an interest in a leadership role especially in the quickly changing environment the NHS now finds itself in. For anyone unsure of whether leadership is for them or not there is another program (Edward Jenner) run by the Leadership Academy which is designed as an introduction and does not have the tight deadlines for assignments. It is purely a modular based online learning package which some may find of interest and you can complete it at your own pace. Rowena, Imaging Service Lead
Well Done Ashby
We want to take this opportunity to congratulate Ashby Hospital Outpatient Staff on their many years of outpa-tient services to the community.
March 2015 saw the end of an era for outpatient clin-ics at Ashby Hospital. Pictured are Eileen Smith, the last patient to be seen in the Outpatient clinic at Ash-by along with Mr David Parker, ENT Consultant, SN
Liz Woods, Elaine Rasmussen and Nicola Grady.
A Patient’s Story: Julie Booth from Shepshed, was referred for a podiatry operation via her GP and found the whole experience straightforward and would definitely recommend the Alliance services.
The Alliance offers patients the things that matter most to them as Julie explained to Andy Kemp, from the Public Patient Participation Group, who represent the patient voice.
“This was my first ever operation so I didn’t know what to expect. I knew the specialist I wanted to do the procedure so I asked if this was possible and was told that patient choice is at the heart of what the Alliance do - so I opted to go with my request. I was also happy for it to be done at Melton Hospital as I wanted a shorter waiting time.
The great thing was that all my pre and post operative care was delivered at my local hospital in Loughborough. I was quite worried before the operation but the staff were fantastic, they put me at ease, reassured me at every stage and I couldn’t have asked for anything better as a patient. I would say to anyone who is due to have elective surgery to think about what is important to them, to be aware that they have a choice and most of all, don’t be afraid to ask.”

Clinical News
The CRG has been working on the following items over the last few months: Hernia Pathway so that all patients with non-incisional hernias can be seen in Primary Care
settings and have their operations in either Primary Care under local anaesthetic, community hospitals or UHL as appropriate
An MSK pathway for both West Leicester CCG and East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG patients
Procedures that can be done in Primary Care and Community Hospital settings as preliminary work before working up business cases to move services.
LiA - You Said We did
You said that you needed new computers and we bought them.
‘I am finding the new computer brilliant, especially looking at letters which previously could take up to 2 minutes to open up, being an essential part of my work remit this would hold me up quite a lot during the day.
The larger screen is also a bonus enabling me to have the screen a little further back giving me the writing space I need in front of the screen without having to have my paper over the keyboard is
also nice and comfortable to use.’. Gillian Van Ristell
Pioneering Teams: The launch of the Pioneering teams is to be held on 15th May 2015. We will have a further update for you in the next newsletter with a synopsis of the projects and updates as to developments.

Tonometer Presentation, 7th April 2015:
The tonometer was purchased using funds raised by the ladies and will be used in the ophthalmology clinics at Hinckley.
This will be an invaluable piece of equipment for the clinic as it can be used to measure pressures in both paediatric patients and adults particularly those who are wheelchair bound.
