Under the CM Punjab Laptop Scheme, more than ten thousand laptops were distributed in a ceremony held at the Iqbal Auditorium. IBCC grants equivalence to Intermediate (Pre-Agriculture)The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) in its 158th meeting held on 13-14 December 2017, while considering the equivalence of Intermediate (Pre-Agriculture) with Intermediate (Pre Engineering) of Boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISEs), has granted one-time equivalence to already passed out students of HSSC of the Community College, UAF to HSSC Pre-Medical or Pre Engineering Group. The IBCC further urged the community

college management to include the subject of Urdu in its scheme of studies and get itself affiliated with BISE Faisalabad for HSSC (Pre-Medical & Pre-Engineering) within the period of three months for current and onward sessions. The IBCC forum also resolved that the scheme of studies of HSSC (Agriculture) be got approved from the concerned provincial authority and report in this regard may be submitted to IBCC secretariat.

Office of Chief Hall Warden arranges orientation for boarder studentsChief Hall Warden Office arranged orientation for newly admitted boarders girls students at Khaldija Hall. Chairing the session, UAF Vice Chancellor Dr M u h a m m a d I q b a l Z a f a r s a i d t h a t w o m e n empowerment and their participation in the socio-economic activities are imperative to make development and to compete with the rest of the world. He added that the university was making all out efforts to provide the modern facilties to the students. Chief Hall Warden Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi said that there are 26 hostels at the campus in which 11500 students are living. He said that out of the these boarders students, there are 4225 women. Two-day Horticulture Expo, 2018 held in Lahore

The Punjab Agriculture Department arranged two-day Horticulture Expo, 2018 meant for growth of horticulture trade in domestic and international markets at the Exhibition Center, Lahore. The Expo was inaugurated by Governor of the Punjab Malik Muhammad Ra�que Rajwana. Under the banner of Horti Expo-2018, Institute of Horticulture Sciences UAF also arranged an International Horticulture Conference at the seminar hall of the Pakistan Expo Centre. More than 40 countries joined this Pakistan Horti Expo-2018 and 16 leading companies also participated in this event whereas more than 100 different stalls installed at Expo Centre Johar Town, Lahore. Addressing the participants, Muhammad Mahmood, Secretary Agriculture said that the �rst Horti Expo-2018 gave a new horizon and opened a new door of opportunities for producer, exporters and companies indulging in horticulture business in

this country. UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said the event gives an opportunity to experts, traders, exporters and farmers to sit together and map out a strategy to promote the sector. He told the country is at 22nd positon in the global vegetable production with approximately 3.0 million tons during the last year but heavily reliant on imported seeds from Europe, USA, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and India.Director IHS Dr Aman Ullah Malik said that there is a lot of opportunities in horticulture sector that needs to be explored. UAF to have Center for Excellence on White�y and Pink BollwormCenter for Excellence on White�y and pink bollworm will be established at the UAF to overcome the pests that are incurring the loss of billions of rupees to national economy. It was discussed at cheaque handing-over ceremony of PARB to Department of Entomology, UAF on two projects over the management of white�y and pink boll worth 75 million. National Food Security Ministry, UAF to further strengthen ties

Ministry of National Food Security and Research and UAF vowed to further strengthen the coordination to arrest the growing pests and insect pathogens in the imported agriculture items. In this regard, a 3-member high ranking committee visited the varsity. The committee was constituted by the National Biosafety Committee (NBC), Ministry of National Food Security and Research to examine the present capacity and indicate the loopholes in the

Institute of Home Sciences arranges art exhibitionThe UAF arranged one-day art exhibition, depicting the colors of eastern civilization, behaviors and other areas of social life. The expo was set up by students of M.A (Fine Arts), Institute of Home Sciences, Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sconces.The exhibition was inaugurated by UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar who was accompanied by Food Sciences Dean Dr Masood Sadiq Butt, Faculty of Agriculture Dean Dr Muhammad Amjad, Home Sciences In-charge Dr Ayesha Riaz and other notables. In the exhibition, more than 20 paintings were put on display that remained center of attraction for art lovers. Talking to participants, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that with the art work, we can promote the tolerance, love and peace in the society. He added that in the west, art work is used as the tool to educate

children so that they can understand civilizations, and other areas effectively.The other painter, Iqra Bashir, Mahnoor Ikram, Sana Shabbir, Sehar Liaqat, Mahnoor, Sana Farooq and Sidra Iqbal gave brie�ng about their master pieces and explained creative theme.

Offseason survey for white�y, pinkboll worm would be initiated

Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB) Chief Executive Officer Dr Noor-ul-Islam Khan has said that offseason survey for white�y and pinkboll worm in the cotton belt would be initiated to identify its species, seasonal occurrence and host plant ranges. He chaired a meeting of white�y and pink boll worm held at the Department of Entomology, UAF. Entomology Department Chairman Dr Muhammad Jalal Arif, Dr Mansoor Sahi, Dr Dildar Gogi, Dr Muhammad Arshad, Dr Ra�que Shahid, Dr Waqas Wakeel, Dr Khawar Ahmad, Dr Dilbar, Dr Faisal Hafeez, Dr Shaheen Aftab, Dr Muhammad Asif and other notable attended the meeting.

Dr Noor-ul-Islam said PARB had given two projects on management of white�y and pink boll worth 75 million to the Department of Entomology UAF in which eight agricultural institutions are working collectively for the noble cause. He also directed the meeting to identify plants that work as white�y and pink boll worm deterrent for the better management in the cotton belt. He lauded the scientists of the Department of Entomology who are working round

the clock on the different pests. Dr. Jalal Arif said that the projects will help yield improvement, increase in export, decrease in import, improvement in input use efficiency and etc. He said that in 2015, cotton crops faced the debacle, resulting in 44 percent reduction then. He said that with improved seed and better management of white�y and pink boll worm will increase the agricultural production by 30 percent that will generate 4 billion dollar to the national economy.

UAF, ZFRI China sign accord to develop research tiesThe Institute of Horticulture Sciences (IHS), UAF and Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute China have inked a Memorandum of Understanding to develop research and academia ties in horticulture especially fruit trees, water melon and melon.The MoU was duly inked by UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar and ZFRI Director Cao Yongsheng whereas Director IHS Dr Aman Ullah Malik, Faculty of Sciences Dean Dr Asghar Bajwa, Faculty of Animal Husbandry Dean Dr Muhamad Sajjad, External Linkages Director Dr Rasheed Ahmad, Dr Ashfaq Ahmad, and other notables also attended.It was agreed upon that both institutions will exchange scienti�c information, academic, and research materials, and publications. The both institutions will also exchange research scholars. They will also carry out international seminars,

workshops and conferences etc to get bene�t from each other experiences.

Seminar on fertilizer model

Experts have said that country can save billions of rupees by ensuring balanced usage of fertilizer that will also help overcome decreasing soil fertility. It was discussed at a meeting of fertilizer model experts and soil fertility model held at main library with UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar in the Chair.Dr Iqbal Zafar said that with the help of UAF fertilizer model, we have disseminated the information among 3.5 million farmers through short message (SMS) so far. He said that in last four months, 30,000

farmers have bene�ted from the model that resulting in increasing the productivity and reducing the cost of production, Principal Investigator Fertilizer Model Dr Muhammad Rasheed said that if we only ensure the 50 percent rational usage of nitrogen and phosphorus, it can add to billions of the rupees to national economy.ICARDA Country Manager Abdul Majeed, Engineer Mushtaq Gill, Dr Ahsan Raza and other notables attended the meeting.

1st Entrepreneurs Festival Faisalabad

UAF staged �rst Entrepreneurs Festival Faisalabad in which 70 start-up companies put their stalls on display to promote the culture of becoming job providers rather than job seekers.

FCCI President Shabbir Hussain Chawla, along with UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar inaugurated the expo following a seminar on Value added-food product and oppor tunit ies for entrepreneurs. They were �anked by FWCCI President Rubina Amjad, ORIC Director Dr Zahir Ahmad Zahir, Dean Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences Dr Masood Sadiq Butt, National Institute of Food Sciences and Technology, Director General Dr Tahir Zahoor,

Turkish Professor Dr. Mithat Direk from Selcuk University, Turkey; Dr Muhammad Younis, FCCI Chairman Dr Habib Aslam Gaba, Dr Abdul Rasheed, Dr Khurrum Zia, Dr Abdul Naveed and other notables. Oath taking ceremony of Academic Staff Association (ASA), UAF was held at Iqbal Auditorium. UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar administrated the oath-taking ceremony. Dr Amer Jamil took oath as ASA President; Dr Haron Zaman as Vice President; Dr Aamer Maqsood as Secretary; Dr Sidra Altaf Joint Secretary; Muhammad Naveed Treasurer; whereas executive members included Shazia Riaz ; Dr Muhammad Tayyib; Dr Khurrum Ali; and Dr Saima Noreen. For Burewala sub campus, members who took oath include Dr Bijnyamin as Vice President; and Ha�z Haroon and Saba Nasir as executive members. For Depalpur-Okara UAF sub-campus, Dr Mazhar Ranjha as Vice President; Dr Tahir

Muneer and Dr Tariq Mustafa as executive members. For UAF sub-campus Toba Tek Singh, Dr Khalid Bashir as Vice President; Dr Shahid ur Rehman and Umer Farooq as executive members took oath.

Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar ‘said that it is our prime responsibility to produce skilled manpower and conduct tangible researches to address the problems of the society, agriculture and industry. He stressed upon the association to come up with staff issues and solutions so that they would be addressed effectively. Dr Amer Jamil said that the ASA will take up the matters to make the university more dynamic and to open up new avenue of the progress of the development and prosperity. ASA former president Rana Amir; former ASA secretary Dr Khurrum Zia and other office ASA bearers attended the ceremony.

Seminar on mobile apps and web developmentAn awareness seminar on mobile apps and web development was arranged at Iqbal Auditorium. The event was a r r a n g e d b y O ffi c e o f R e s e a r c h Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) and was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar.Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that IT sector has a great potential and we have to take our share in the international market. He said that with the skills of IT, the students had got online work and earned heavy money. Saylani Welfare Trust's Information Technology Department Director Zia Ullah Khan that his Trust had established state-of-the-art computer labs for the welfare of the students. He added that under the Saylani Mass IT Training Program, 10,000 software developers will be trained in the years to come that will boost the economy by one billion dollar annually.

ORIC Director Zahir Ahmad Zahir urged the students to think out of the box and start new businesses in order to move the country to new height of economic progress and prosperity. Chairman Department of Computer Sciences Tasleem Mustafa said that education and skilled manpower is the way forward to �ght the poverty like challenges. Dr Abdul Rashed urged students to devote their time for the acquiring the knowledge that is a guarantee of a bright future. Principal Officer Laboratory School Dr Khalil Ur Rehman also spoke on the occasion.

Student Nutritionists Club Pakistan (SNCP) launched Nutrition experts have called for stepped-up efforts to address the issue of malnutrition that is hitting half of the population.They were addressing at the launching of Student Nutritionists Club Pakistan (SNCP) and a magazine Voice of Nutritionist at a local hotel.Presiding over the session, UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that malnutrition issue was worsening due to changing life style so that there is a need to create about balanced usage of food. He was of the view that junk food had become common in our lives that is not good for health. He said that simplicity and traditional food habits would help improve the situation.

Dean Faculty of Food Sciences, Nutrition and Home Sciences Dr Masood Sadiq Butt said that there was the need of food forti�cation to overcome the issue

of malnutrition. He urged people to use balances diet and to adopt the physical activities in their daily lives. He said that we should put focus of our children on the homemade dishes full of energy.National Institute of Food Sciences and Technology Director General Dr Tahir Zahoor said vitamin D de�ciency at high with 60 percent; vitamin A 45 percent whereas maternal anaemia de�ciency stands at 49 and child stunting level 43 percent. SNCP President Hira President Hira Iftikahr and SNCP Secretary General Shoaib Aziz also spoke on the occasion.

Seminar on self-sustaining rural enterprisesSpeakers of a seminar on self-sustaining rural enterprises urged to promote small and medium enterprises to transform the rural set-up into a growing business hubs of the country. The seminar was organized by Institute of Agricultural and Resource Economics at DLC-2 with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Zafar as chief guest.Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that 3.2 million SMEs are contributing 30 percent share in the national economy. He emphasized the participants to involve the rural females in rural business activities.He said Turkish and Thai people are famous due to their successful model of rural enterprises, that can be replicated at the rural set-up of the country. Turkish Professor Dr. Mithat Direk from Selcuk University, Konya Turkey said that micro and small enterprises (MSE) are playing pivotal role in socio-economic development and poverty alleviation in Turkey that could also bene�t Pakistan to arrest the unemployment.In Turkey, he told that the government has created trade mark villages to boost relevant industry and business in the area. Describing the small enterprises as engines of economic growth, he said that it has the

potential to generate employment and to alleviate p o ve r t y i n a n e nv i ro n m e n t o f i n c re a s i n g unemployment and widening income inequality. Aussie scientists, UAF Vice Chancellor discuss deteriorating water qualityDr. Richard Culas, and Dr. Michael Mitchell from Charles Sturt University (CSU)'s Institute for Land, Water and Society (ILWS) Australia called on UAF Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Zafar at his chamber. They visited the varsity in connection with the ACIAR funded project of CSU on “Improving groundwater management to enhance agriculture and farming livelihoods In Pakistan”

Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said that UAF had well-established Water Management Institute (WMI), which had been successful in developing technologies on various aspects of water management creating an environment among the farming community to adopt the improved water management practices. Dr. Richard Culas said project would build the capacity of researchers, farming communities and others to improve groundwater management. The speci�c project objectives are to develop and articulate a shared understanding of sustainable groundwater use. Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq said that they had completed projects on water management with international institutes.
