KAPA HAKA

We had a great opportunity to visit the little ones at Little Moas during Matariki Wiki.

A group of about 25 of us walked there. We performed for them and they even joined in every time we said “hope” and “ki raro”, they echoed us.

It was such fun, we loved doing the performances and afterwards we coloured in bookmarks and read to them.

There were lots of photos and information about our Kura on their wall and graduation photos. Some of our ropu remembered going there when they were young and knew some teachers too. We knew Tiare’s Mum.

I enjoyed teaching them a couple of waiata.

Fun Run Schedule

Don’t forget the Fun Run on Thursday 19th September (if the day is too wet, we will hold it on Monday 23rd September).

This year there will be some obstacles and the children will remain on the field for the whole course. They may get a little dirty, so please have them wear old clothes. As we are including an inflatable obstacle children will be running barefoot. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer the children on, the timetable is as follows:

9.15am Rooms 3, 5, 6, 2 (one lap)

9.30am Rooms 8, 9, 10 (one lap)

10.00am Rooms 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 (two laps)

11.30am Rooms 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 (three laps)

1.45pm Rooms 21, 22, 23, 24 (three laps)

Sponsorship forms have been handed out, and additional forms are available at the office.

There are some great prizes including passes to LaserTag, Parakai Springs, Auckland Zoo as well as one month’s free swimming lessons with Hilton Brown, one term of Drama with Helen O’Grady and many more.

Funds raised this year will go towards upgrading and improving the school grounds (e.g. Astroturf on the asphalt playground or landscaping the pool). We look forward to seeing you there!

Measles

With the current measles epidemic sweeping the country we would like to remind all our Stanhope families that if you or your family are not immunised, you are at greater risk of contracting and spreading the virus. Therefore, we need to be extra vigilant in monitoring ill health symptoms at this time.

We are continuing to update our students records and ask you as a matter of urgency if you have not done so already to provide the school office with details of your child/rens immunisation status. This can be done simply by taking a photo of their Plunket book immunisation page and emailing this to [email protected].

Room 17 have had a wonderful visit from Frazer Dale, Outreach Educator from Auckland Zoo, and Hazel Meadows, Sustainable Schools Advisor from Auckland Council. We discussed and examined some of the animal pests that threaten our native wildlife, such as rats, mice, stoats, ferrets and weasels.

Room 17 students then undertook some “citizen science”, by installing some tracking tunnels, chew cards and wax tags within the school grounds. These will enable us to monitor what types of pest animals are present within our school. We are really looking forward to seeing the results.

TONGAN LANGUAGE WEEK

It was a busy and colourful week at SRS celebrating Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga 2019!

Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa ‘aki ‘a e Tauhi Fonua - A Tongan Perspective of Enriching Aotearoa, New Zealand.

After an exciting school launch, we learned lots about the Tongan culture and language throughout the week and ended it with lots of yummy Tongan treats!

A HUGE THANK YOU to our Tongan parents and community who came along to our Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga launch, who prepared the hall, shared their knowledge of Tongan culture and for cooking all of the scrumptious food we ate! We really appreciate you – malo ‘aupito!

SRS BIKE AMBASSADORS

Wednesday was the first training session for our SRS Bike Ambassadors, which was organised by our Auckland Transport Travelwise Coordinator, Joni Lee.

These Year 6 volunteers, spent the day with Janet Stark, a Cycle Coach, and Coordinator, learning how to be a Bike Ambassador, understanding bike and helmet safety, bike maintenance and route planning.

The role of these ambassadors will be not only to check and assist students with their bikes but also to remind students about bike safety to and from school.

Each ambassador was also lucky enough to receive one ‘spokey dokey’ for their bikes, a map and a bike crew workbook. The students were also complimented by Janet for their enthusiasm and courtesy.

Well done Bike Ambassadors.

After a hiatus last year, Hautūtanga came back to EPro8 with a vengeance – fielding 4 teams! The teams: Roboti-cus, Stan-Bots, Illogicals and E-nnovate were challenged to create and think critically using different types of technology! You did an amazing job EPro8ers! We are so proud of your perseverance and GRIT! See you next year, Year 7s!

Puāwaitanga were excited to field two teams at this year’s EPro8 competition. We learnt lots and can’t wait until next year. Well done Roboti-cus and E-nnovate, you did some great problem solving.
