The Principal writes …… After ten years as a member of the Local Governing Body (LGB) and the last two years as Chair, Mrs Karen Myring has decided to step down from the Board as her term of office comes to an end. Mrs Myring has been a strong supporter of Riddlesdown for a long time and her role on the LGB has seen her oversee health and safety, HR and a range of community issues. Her relationship with the Collegiate will continue as she joins the group of Members who oversee the work of The Collegiate Trust Board of Directors and we are grateful for her continued contribution. Mr Vernon Rapley, previously Vice Chair, has now been appointed as the new Chair of the LGB and he will be supported by Mr Raj Jhangiani as Vice Chair. At the same time, a vacancy has arisen for a Parent Governor and we will shortly be seeking applications for this role. Working as part of a LGB can be a very stimulating and rewarding experience. It brings opportunities to better understand and contribute to the leadership of the Collegiate and I hope will be appealing to some parents. I will write with further details next week. Thank you to parents of Year 10 students who attended the Welcome to GCSE Evening this week; I hope that it was informative and useful. Year 10 students will be the first Year Group to follow reformed GCSEs in all subjects; all grades will be awarded on the new 9-1 scale and the nature of courses is more demanding. Students have been preparing for such demands throughout Key Stage 3 and are settling well into their new courses - we hope and expect that their continued hard work will lead to continued good progress. I wanted to remind students of the need to be alert and sensible on their journeys to and from the Collegiate. As far as possible, students are advised to walk in pairs or small groups, to use well lit paths and to avoid contact with strangers. If at any time a student becomes concerned for their safety, they should return to the Collegiate if still in the vicinity. If not, they should try to move away from the situation and alert a parent/member of staff as soon as possible. I would be grateful if parents would reinforce these messages. The purpose of this advice is not to cause unnecessary concern, but it is just a routine reminder as we head into autumn. Please also remind students not to walk on the farmland in the surrounding area to avoid damaging any crops and to ensure that they stay on the footpaths in these areas. Finally, a reminder that College VI Open Evening for current Year 11 students and their parents will take place on Thursday 12th October 2017, 6-8pm. We are looking forward to welcoming students and supporting them with their course choices at this event. I look forward to building on the success of my predecessor Karen Myring by working with Mr Dey and his talented team to take Riddlesdown Collegiate ‘beyond outstanding’. I have no doubt that the role will be challenging at times but I can take comfort from the fact that I will be supported by an excellent Vice Chair, Raj Jhangiani, and a diverse and experienced team of governors. Together we will ensure that the correct level of governance is in place but most importantly that we are a catalyst for change, seeking to make positive improvements for students and staff, now and into the future. The National Governors’ Association describes the role of Chair as: a confidant, a manager, a critical friend, a cheerleader, an ambassador, an arbiter and possibly a mentor and coach. I will look to balance these roles to complement the support available to the Collegiate from The Collegiate Trust and provide a bespoke level of support for Mr Dey and his team. Those of you who know me may doubt my capabilities as a ‘cheerleader’ but during my tenure you should expect to hear me singing with praise, at every opportunity, about the wonderful students, staff and facilities that make Riddlesdown Collegiate so much more than just an ‘Outstanding’ school.

Message from Vernon Rapley Chair of Local Governing Body It is an honour and privilege to have been elected as Chair of the Local Governing Body. 2017-2918 Young Enterprise Company Programme We would like to wish the following students: Shanice Blackman, Lewis Pole, Maria Christou,

Hannah Elliott, Jessica Fish, Nithan Anilal, Christopher Luala and Kieren Samms good luck

as they embark on the 2017-2918 Young Enterprise Company Programme.

Participation in this programme gives students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their

business and entrepreneurial talents. As part of the programme they set up and run a business

under the guidance of a business volunteer.

The students make all the decisions about their company, from deciding on the company name

and product to creating a business plan, managing the company finances and selling to the public.

They will be present at a trade fair prior to Christmas to sell their products and I am sure they

would welcome your support.

Year 13 Art & Photography Amy Fogden who is Year 13 had the pleasure of

teaching Year 12 Art students photography techniques

in a session that was delivered by her.

Students were able to see from another student’s

perspective how photography informs art and

vice-versa. Fantastic job Amy and well done.

Uniform Thank you for your on-going support by ensuring your son/daughter wears the correct uniform

every day. The smart wearing of correct school uniform is central to the ethos of the Collegiate as

it demonstrates pride in the school and a readiness to work.

All students are required to wear the correct uniform and to wear it correctly and to support this,

the Collegiate is prepared to lend spare items of uniform, if required, to allow students time to

replace any lost or damaged items.

Unfortunately some students are choosing not to wear their uniform correctly despite numerous

general reminders and a number of individual warnings.

Please remind your daughter(s) that skirts should not be rolled at the waist or worn at an

unacceptably short length. The school skirt, available from Hewitts, should be long enough so that

it is worn to the centre of the knee.

Any student that persists in wearing her skirt inappropriately, will now be required to wear school

trousers instead. Please ensure your daughter(s) own the correct skirts by the end of this half

term.
