This month we are going to explore the 3rd part of the 4 Way Test: Will it build GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? The dictionary definition of Goodwill is: “friendly, helpful, or cooperative feelings or attitude” which means the tenet of Goodwill and Better Friendships is a reiteration of the word Friendships. When I think of all the wonderful people I have met through Rotary, and I’m not talking about just our district. Going to International events has opened my eyes to the amazing network of fellow Rotarians who participate in Service above Self throughout the world and the opportunity we have to make an impact by spreading Goodwill. I want to again encourage you to register today for the International Convention in Atlanta where you will be able to talk to people from all nations. The flag ceremony builds a special feeling in your soul to see how many countries are represented within Rotary and knowing all of those countries place the 4 Way Test in high regards. When you meet someone at a Rotary event, you are able to bypass a little of the “getting to know you” ritual by knowing those are people of integrity and their hearts are in serving others. This has truly been the best part of Rotary for me…not that I’m a “people-person or anything.” So let’s look at some things we can do to build Goodwill and Better Friendships. “Lessons to Learn,” from the primary reader, A Note From District Governor Tony Williams Rotary District 6460 Rotary Serving Humanity P.O. Dear District 6460 Rotarians, Welcome to Spring! The weather might not be what we want it to be during the springtime, but ... He makes His sun rise on those who are evil and on those who are good, and makes the rain fall on the righteous…(Matthew 5:45). No one can say the weather is not fair to all. Remind you of anything? Growing up with Dick and Jane. I’ll list a few of the things “Dick and Jane” thought were important for children to learn (sidebar: some younger people may not know who Dick and Jane were, but everyone my age probably does). The book lists things like: Respect you parents. Mind your manners. Behave in the car and on the bus. Work and play well with others. Help others. Be kind to everyone. Take school seriously. Work hard at your job. Watch for the safety of other. Clean up after yourself. Follow directions and rules. Do not complain. Those are all things we teach our children. Time has not changed those basic rules for children to learn. However, it is the other lessons that speak to me when I think about how to build Goodwill and Better Friendships. Following rules and doing the right thing are good for everyone to do but when it comes to making friends around the world, we should be paying attention to advice like: Appreciate Nature. Be proud of your accomplishments. Take chances. Cooperate. Help others. Be creative. Encourage others. Share what you have. Be kind to animals. Express what you feel. Cleverness is rewarded. Accept the limitations of other people. The older you are, the more you should do. Keep your sense of humor. Be curious. Be considerate. Be self-assured. Be enthusiastic. Amuse yourself. Play is valuable. Reading is good. When we learn to do more than just what is expected of us, others around us are attracted to the positive in us. All of these aspects of Goodwill and Better Friendships go without saying, but some are harder than others. In our clubs, do we cooperate? Do we want to do things our way? Do we allow for the opinions of others or insist on doing everything our way or the way it has always been done? Do we understand that everyone does not have the same priorities as we do? Are we considerate of other peoples’ feelings? Do we take chances to see what new ways we can impact the world? Do we keep our sense of humor, or are our meetings dry and boring? Do we share and do we play? I think one of the things most visitors say when they attend my home club, Jacksonville Noon Rotary, is we know how to have fun. The meetings are full of business, yes, but you can hear laughter and see smiles all around the room. Evaluate your meetings and look for the humor and bring out the laughter. Friends laugh together and that makes working together even more fun. Henry David Thoreau said, “Not words, but meaning.” Our meetings are not just supposed to be tasks, but activities that have meaning in our world and across the nations. Aristotle said, “A single soul dwelling in two bodies.” His way of explaining friendship. We are one person when we share one mindfulness. Homer said, “Two bodies and one soul inspired.” We are separate but with one purpose when we are friends. Kahill Gibran said, “Always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity.” Your responsibility as a Rotarian hinges on the 4Way Test and what a sweet responsibility that is! Robert Louis Stevenson said, “So long as we love and we serve; so long as we are loved by others, I would almost say that we are indispensable, and not one is useless while they have a friend…A friend is a present you give yourself.” I love you, my friends, and want to express how much I enjoy being able to serve you as your District Governor this year. It is my fervent wish you feel you could come to me for help without hesitation. I may not be able to fix anything but I can surely try. I like getting my hands dirty in the trenches with Rotarians, working on projects benefitting our local and international friends. Also, I am reminded by my wife to express her deep appreciation for the anonymous gift of a Paul Harris Fellowship. We have committed this year to paying a monthly amount that will equal a Paul Harris Fellowship every year and for someone to bless her with that gift meant more to her than you can imagine. She says to tell her benefactor she was humbled and surprised. Until next month, I remain your Faithful Servant, Tony Williams District Governor 6460 2016/17

Rotary Program – March 16, 2017: Rotarian Larry McAuley introduced Marla Reynolds from the Mercer County Family Crisis Center to present the program for the meeting. The Children's Advocacy Center is a collaborative effort involving the Mercer County Family Crisis Center, The Mercer county State's Attorney, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Mercer County law enforcement agencies, Illinois State Police and other community participants. Together, these agencies use the Children's Advocacy Center as a means of reducing trauma to children that have suffered assault or abuse. In the past, any or all of the above-listed agencies interviewed children at least one time. Now, the closed-circuit camera, microphones, monitor, and audio and visual recording systems allow these agencies to work together, conducting one interview. Being interviewed one time is easier on the child victim and enables each agency involved to witness the interview resulting in each agency having the same information. As a result, prosecution is more feasible and in the end, offenders will be held accountable for their actions. Family Crisis Center: The Mercer county Family Crisis Center provides services and support for victims of violence and educates the public concerning these matters. The Agency is staffed by paid personnel and volunteers. Area served- Mercer County and surrounding counties

• 24 hour Telephone crisis intervention

• Individual and group counseling

• Children's programs

• Court Advocacy

• Information and referral

• Public education

• Abuser counseling

• Parenting classes

• Emergency shelter Family Centered Services: Because of the successful Champions4Childern Walk, the past several years, the Family Crisis Center is currently able to offer quality services to Mercer County students who have a history of truancy, suspension, and/or expulsion. Area schools make referrals to the Family Crisis Center, and in turn these students receive services from a licensed Clinical Psychologist and their staff. This has been a very successful program.

Past District Governor Steve Hopper, left. presents Rotary Club of Macomb President Bryce Dexter, with the first songbook "Songs for the Rotary Club" printed in 1925. The introduction stated:

This is the first song book for the Rotary club with the music score for many of the songs. We realize that it is not the ideal Rotary song book. It is something that will serve the purpose for the present and be improved in the future. The selection of songs for this book has been no small task. Hundreds of efforts to write Rotary words to familiar airs have been received from clubs and individuals but only a few could be printed. It is suggested that a club using this book mimeograph the Rotary words to familiar airs most popular in its locality and that these mimeographed sheets be pasted in where blank pages have been left for this purpose. There are included a few Rotary songs without music because we were unable to secure right to publish the music. For these there is a note below indicating where the music may be purchased. This book has been prepared particularly to meet the requirements of clubs in the United States and Canada, but it is hoped that it may be also of some service to clubs in other countries.

From The Rotary Foundation, March 6, 2017, Ref: Matching Grant #79417:

Matching Grant Project #79417, to help provide treatment to the hearing impaired including screening and giving out hearing aids in and around Chennai and its neighboring areas, Tamilnadu, India. Your cooperation in fulfilling the RF(I) requirements of the Matching Grant Program is greatly appreciated. As all of the required information has been included the Foundation will mark the file as closed

Here is the rest of the story on D6460's, final TRF Matching Grant. The grant was a dream of a rotary fellowship, called Rotarians On The Internet (ROTI). They got together and wanted to do a project under the TRF Matching Grant process before the program was phased out. Members of ROTI, met and decided to fund a grant that would provide treatment to the hearing impaired including screening and giving of hearing aids in and around Chennai and its neighboring areas, Tamilnadu, India. This TRF Matching grant was approved on 8 July 2013. The total amount of the grant was $20,074.00. Members of ROTI made contributions as well as the Rotary Club of Galesburg, Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk, along with District Designated Funds (DDF) from Districts 3230, 6060 and our own 6460. Past District Governor (PDG) Todd Lindley was a great help with coordinating the donations, that were coming from all parts of the world. We wish to thank the following Rotarians for their understanding and support for this grant project, PDG Todd Lindley, Divyesh Palicha, Ravi Krishnan, Vasanthi Ananth, and the members of the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk and District 3230. Past Club President Lee Farrar and the members of the Rotary Club of Galesburg and District 6460. We gave the gift of sound to those who could not hear. We have helped make a chapter in the history of the Rotary Foundation with the closure of our TRF Matching Grants. This grant project was made possible by the Rotarians On The Internet (ROTI) Rotary Fellowship. We truly created an impact for individuals, their families and communities through this grant project.

Chelsea Mertz, Community Specialist, Rotary Service Connections, Rotary International

There is now the ability to use multiple vendors to transfer your membership data to Rotary International. Rotary International is in the process of upgrading this system, so that you would be able to indicate directly which vendor, ClubRunner or DaCdb, is your preferred vendor for your club and which is the secondary vendor used by your district (District 6460 uses DaCdb at the District Level). This will be available via the Club Administration section of My Rotary within the next month. For now, this process is being handled by our Data Services team. To enable the functionality, you must email [email protected] with your club ID and indicating which vendor is for your club and which is for the district. Our Data Services team will then indicate this in our database. From that point, you will only have to input the data into ClubRunner, as your club database, and it will be transferred automatically to both RI and DaCdb for your district database.

Dan Colvin, District Club Service Chair

Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you are going, chances are you will end up someplace else.” Amazing how right he could be, if you could understand him. Most of the clubs in our district are getting along magnificently – they are working hard in their communities, they are active in Foundation giving, they are experiencing wonderful programs and meaningful fellowship in meetings. Yet for some, perhaps many, the quotation from Alice in Wonderland tells the real story: “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” Why is that? One of the main problems here is the lack of unified focus. All too often a club has several, perhaps many, members who are actively pursuing Rotary objectives. And yet the club doesn’t have traction. With so many active Rotarians it is often the case that their actions are at cross purposes. It is much like two people in a canoe, with one paddling in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. They are active, they might even be having fun, and boy is the watur churning and churning, but they aren’t getting anywhere. What your club might need is Visioning! Visioning is a process by which a club can start to “read off the same page.” To have a clear and energizing idea of where that club wants to go. It is a means of achieving unified focus. Our district has conducted many visioning meetings (I have been involved in four myself) so far. I have seen the exciting results from an evening spent together imagining the future and, by the end, articulating a vision. In every case, the club has begun to move in a single direction.

Club Service - Continued

So, what is so good about a visioning session? Visioning helps a club determine direction. Yogi was right. If your club doesn’t know where it is going, it won’t know if it gets there! Duh! But also it will spend too much energy getting somewhere else. This is true for every club, old or young. Older clubs might lose focus or stagnate – they do the same old thing without knowing why. Younger clubs get past that initial glee of becoming a club, but then ask, “So what do we do now?” Visioning produces enthusiasm. When everyone is working together to achieve common goals, there is often new excitement in the club. Of course the visioning event in itself produces discovery and enthusiasm, but that enthusiasm continues through to the follow-up. One club leader recently told me that his club, which had become rather tired over the years, gained a new spark as a result of their visioning session. Visioning integrates new members As clubs grow, it is easy to keep on the same path without including new members’ ideas and hopes. Doing the visioning exercise encourages input from new members as it renews the older members. There often is a new sense of club unity and openness. Visioning gives measureable outcomes and aids strategic planning It is hard to see how far you have come and how far you have to go without some kind of quantitative standards. Visioning provides a means of evaluating your progress in achieving your vision. Moreover, it provides a solid for strategic planning because it provides specific and achievable goals to plan for. So what are you waiting for? Arrange for a Visioning Team to work with your club. Contact PDG Suzanne Ellerbock (mailto:[email protected]) or Bill Durall ([email protected]) for more information or to arrange your visioning session.
