ECQA Certified Terminology Manager

Record number attend launch of “ECQA Certified Terminology Manager Advanced” at International Terminology Summer School This job role is the second to be developed under the initiative of TermNet - three years after the highly successful ECQA Certified Terminology Manager – Basic entered the stage. Its first training course took place from 15-19 July at the Co-logne University of Applied Sciences in Germany. It was attended by a highly international group of translators, termi-nologists and other language professionals as well as researchers. A large majority of them work either in global enter-prises or in one of the many International and European institutions. Since its first exam, the ECQA Certified Terminology Manager has become a highly valued and recognized certification in the field of terminology and related professions. This is partly due to a serious lack of available qualification in the sector - a gap the ECQA could successfully fill. But an-other success factor is the strategic planning and partnering policy and use of synergies in the provision of the training courses.

The most recent example being the renowned International Terminology Summer School which celebrated its 30th An-niversary this year.

“The Terminology Summer School has been a success story for many years now. However, in 2013 we saw a record num-ber of about 90 participants coming from all corners of the world, from the USA to Ethiopia. We believe that this increase is at least partly owed to the extra benefit that a recognized certification such as ECQA has to offer for the participants. Especially those from the business sector. We provide training for some of the most recognized brands. But also partici-pants from the European Parliament and Commission as well as the various UN Organizations increasingly request ECQA certification“, said Dr. Anja Drame, one of the organizers of the Summer School. Demand remains high for the “Basic” certificates and it is expected that the “Advanced” will be similarly successful. In addition, the development of specialized job roles like legal terminology manager has been voiced. A number of such specialized certificates are therefore currently in preparation and expected in 2014.

Introducing ECQA at the MakeLearn Conference 2013

The MakeLearn Conference is an International Scientific Conference on Management of Knowledge and Learning and is organised by the International School for Social and Business Studies (ISSBS) in cooperation with foreign partner universities, international institutes and organisations.

With this conference, the ISSBS encourages the sharing of most recent developments in the field of knowledge man-agement between Slovene and foreign experts, as well as promotes itself and higher education in the Central and South-Eastern Europe. This year’s focus of the conference was knowledge, management and innovation intertwined with active citizenship. Aldea Cosmina (“Politehnica” University of Timisoara, Romania), Michael Reiner (IMC Univer-sity of Applied Sciences, Austria), and Anca Draghici (”Politehnica” University of Timisoara, Romania) attended this conference as representatives of the ECQA and held a presentation on “Characterization of virtual project teams for e-learning communities”.

In this presentation, the current situation of the educational system was discussed as well as the ECQA and its core ideas were presented. An important part was to point out the success story of the ECQA, which currently counts 60 members of 25 countries and thousands of already issued certificates in 27 different job roles, and a constantly grow-ing community of people that are interested. Furthermore, the visions of the ECQA for 2020 were discussed and the results of a marketing survey, conducted by the ECQA in October 2012, were presented.

Please find the submitted paper and more information on the survey here: www.toknowpress.net/ISBN/978-961-6914-02-4/papers/ML13-269.pdf

EuroSPI 2013

EuroSPI – European Systems, Software, and Services Process Improvement and Innovation

For 20 years every year we have been moving to different countries and ask the local community to organize an event, offering insight in the local tradition and a social space for research and industry partnership discussions. The EuroSPI conference presents and discusses results from systems, software and services process improvement and innova-tion (SPI) projects in industry and research, focusing on the gained benefits and the criteria for success. This year’s event is the 20th of a series of conferences to which international researchers and professionals contribute their lessons learned and share their knowledge as they work towards the next higher level of software management professionalism.

At EuroSPI 2013 experts from 24 countries participated. To celebrate 20 years of EuroSPI we (1) invited initernational key notes to think about the SPI future (the next 20 years) and (2) we crteated an online multimedia presentation of key notes, a EuroSPOI film, and selected interviews.

AQUA – Knowledge Alliance for Training, Quality and Excellence in Automotive

Flash progress report

We illustrate the AQUA architecture in Fig.1 below. In AQUA a base layer of core modules will be established which allow an integrated and complementary view about the three approaches, including Automotive SPICE, Functional Safety, and Lean Six Sigma. Integrated means, the base layer modules extract and teach common paradigms and principles - “the essence” - from the latter, and the link layer expresses the mapping or translation to Automotive SPICE, Functional Safety, and Lean Six Sigma. In this way, the complexity of learning and mastering all three standards can be significantly reduced.

The core team of experts in Automotive SPICE, Six Sig-ma, and Functional Safety met in Graz on 12.-13.2.2013. Together with Automotive Clusters this course combin-ing all 3 topics in one will be integrated into the Auto-motive Academies from 2014 onwards.

An international workshop was organized at EuroSPI 2013, 25.-28.6.2013, in Dundalk, Ireland, where the AQUA approach was discussed with leading industry from Au-tomotive, medical device and aerospace industry.

Also the Automotive Cluster Slovenia (workshop for Au-tomotive partners on 4.6.2013), and the Automotive Cluster Austria (workshop on 28 August 2013) organize meetings with core industry to co-define the competencies to be covered by the course program.

The feedback from the Automotive clusters is used to develop a first prototype of course elements till 2.9.2013. On 2.-4.9. the next project meeting hosted by the Automotive Cluster Slovenia will take place. Also partners of the Czech Automotive Cluster will join the meeting in Ljubljana.

AQUA was also presented on 17.5.2013 at the SOQRATES group in Erlangen, Germany. This is a group of leading elec-tronics and Automotive companies in Germany (originally kicked off by the Bavarian software initiative in 2003) , in-cluding companies such as ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Continental Automotive AG, HELLA, Elektrobit, etc. The SOQRATES group will participate as a trial group for AQUA.

AQUA will create a training and certification based on the ECQA (European Certification and Qualification Association) schema. First certifications are expected from 2014 onwards.
