From The Principal’s Office Active After School Programs for term 2 start this week! If you are interested in having your child try out a new sport or would like to help your child be active and engage with other students, we invite you to be part of our Active After School Program in term 2. There are a few vacancies hockey sessions on Tuesday afternoons for students in year 2-6.
Head Lice and Holidays Our experience is that after the holiday period we have increased incidents of head lice across the school community. We will be conducting head lice checks in coming weeks to reduce this community health issue. Parents are asked to check their own child’s hair regularly and treat as necessary to help us prevent outbreaks of head lice in the school. School Website Have you missed the newsletter? Chaplain’s News
Hi everyone!
Here is a snippet of an article I found on a website titled “The Better Life
Coaching Blog” Darren Poke is an accredited and experienced Life Coach
who has set up this blog to inspire others. I found it really interesting to
read and I hope you do too.
“For those who don’t know, Anzac stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and on
April 25, 1915, the Anzacs landed at the hostile beach of Gallipoli for an eight month campaign
that ultimately proved fruitless. Despite the loss, the characteristics displayed by our troops
have become part of our folklore.
What can we learn from our Anzacs?
Retain Your Sense of Humour: The Anzac troops have always been
renowned for retaining their ability to laugh even when under extreme
pressure. Practical jokes were a regular event, normally at the expense of
their British Allies who didn’t appreciate the perceived lack of discipline.
This is a great lesson for us. It would be very rare that in today’s world we
would experience anything like the pressure that our troops did, however
there are times when we do feel stressed and everyone around you is
under pressure as well. Keep on smiling and look for opportunities to
lighten the mood when the people around you are getting too serious.
Courage under Fire: The story of Simpson and his
Donkey is one of the great legends of Gallipoli. Simpson was a stretcher
bearer who was able to obtain a donkey to assist him in rescuing wounded
soldiers from the battlefield. He would make dashes into no mans land and
saved up to 300 soldiers over a period of a few weeks before being shot
himself. Simpson’s reckless and selfless courage has made him one of the
most revered figures in Anzac history.
Whilst we are unlikely to face the same conditions, there are occasions
when we may need to make decisions that will require courage. To defend
the disadvantaged, stand up for an important principle or do the right thing when everyone
around you disagrees takes a different type of courage, but it’s still important.
May Anzac Day be a special day for our families as we remember the sacrifices others made
for the freedom we now enjoy.
Take Care everyone!

Sports News Hello everyone,
Congratulations to everyone who was part of the Drouin West Athletics Team that participated at the Geoff Watt Track
on Friday. Luckily the weather held off, albeit for a slight drizzle and some patchy winds. For those students who came
first and second, the next stage of the Athletics Carnival is at the Joe Carmody Track at Newborough on Thursday, 9 th
May. Also, a big thank-you goes to Hunter, Cade, Chloe and Jordan who were our photographers and captured
everyone in action.
2013 Winter School Sports
The winter school sports round robin competition is organised to take place
later on in term 2. All students in grades 5/6 as part of their PE and Senior School Sport Program are getting the chance
to experience and try out each sport: Football, Soccer, Netball, T-Ball and Hockey. Once they have had the opportunity
to see which sport they would like to be a part of, they will be asked to join up for a team. Because some sports may be
more popular than others, students may not get their first choice. Also, grade 4 students in 4/5A and 3/4A will have the
opportunity to fill any vacancies in teams where there are not enough grade 5/6 students.
In order for the students to get the most out of this experience, we would be very grateful to have parents or older
siblings, cousins etc to volunteer to be coaches. If anyone who is interested in coaching football, soccer, netball, hockey
or T-ball could you let Mr. Dawson or Ann in the office know that would be fantastic! Exact dates for the competition
are not known yet. When the teams have been finalised, Monday afternoon’s from 2:15 to 3:15 will be set aside for
training. If you are interested but can’t make this time please still let me know as we may be able to work around it. Or
perhaps you might be able to spare an hour out on Monday afternoon’s but are not available to coach on the day. Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.
HOOP TIME
The Hoop Time program operates as a round robin basketball tournament, where the rules have been slightly modified.
Expressions of interest are now being taken. You do not need any basketball experience. Parents will be notified of the
cost involved when numbers are finalised. If you are interested in this opportunity, please simply fill out the below
form and return it to in your child’s red bag to the office. At this stage we need more students involved in order for
us to fill teams.
