We have been delighted to welcome our new year 7s to Cox Green. They have been so positive and

hardworking and I am very proud of their excellent start.

In addition we have welcomed back our year 12 and year 11 students who we have been so pleased to see

again. They have conducted themselves in an exemplary way.

We cannot wait to welcome the rest of the school back on Monday and have Cox Green School fully alive

again!

Odhran Carpenter and Finn McCartney (Year 11).

During the Summer holidays Odhrans family had their usual two week sailing

holiday on their yacht Ceilidh Mara (a 47 foot ocean going yacht). On board were

Dad, Mum, their youngest daughters (8 and 10), Odhran(15) and his friend Finn

(15). Odhran and Finn had to take control of the yacht and call the lifeguards for

assistant when Odhrans dad severed a finger in an accident while their mum was

incapacitated with gastro enteritis. Congratulations to Odhran and Finn for their

calm and skilful handling of a very difficult situation.

The whole story told by Odhrans dad:

On the penultimate day of an amazing holiday we sailed back across the English

Channel from Dielette to Studland Bay where we had planned a beach BBQ on our

final night. This is a 10 hour passage and much of it was perfect fast sailing.

Unfortunately Odhran’s Mum Natasha was very unwell with what turned out to be an extreme case of Gastro

enteritis. She was incapacitated in bed. In the late stages of the passage, as we approached the Dorset coast, I

became increasingly concerned about Natasha’s wellbeing. Odhran and I sailed Ceilidh Mara at full speed so we

could look after Natasha and call for medical advice.

As we approached the anchorage in Studland Bay, we started to lower sails to slow the boat down ready to

anchor. I used an electric winch to roll up the head sail and suddenly a gust of wind blew a rope towards this

winch. This rope caught my little finger which was immediately severed. It took with it all of its tendon as far as my

elbow and the cockpit was splattered with blood. Odhran was the only one to witness the accident and saw it’s

gory details.

So there we were – both adults incapacitated and 13 tonnes of Ocean going yacht heading towards boats in an

anchorage or the beach beyond at full speed. It was critical to lower the remaining sails and to anchor the boat. I

was clearly in excruciating pain but was able to steer the boat using her autopilot and issue instructions, while

broadcasting a Mayday via VHF radio. I was worrying about passing out. Odhran had no choice but to take

responsibility for all things on deck, aided by Finn. He managed to lower the main sail by himself and then he and

Finn managed to lower the anchor. Both of these were complex tasks that they had never done before

unsupervised. As a result of the actions of Odhran and Finn, Ceilidh Mara was safely anchored. By this time

Swanage Lifeboat had arrived and provided first aid to me before taking all of the crew off so I could be taken to

hospital for surgery. The Lifeboat men commented on the calm actions of the Ceilidh Mara crew, in particular

Odhran and Finn. They helped me ensure that at no point was any crew member or Ceilidh Mara in danger.

The story does not end there…

I was taken by ambulance to hospital in Poole and the family got a taxi back to Maidenhead. By this point

Natasha’s health had worsened. The boys remained calm throughout and looked after Isabella and Emilia. That

night Natasha was admitted to hospital. Odhran’s older sister Naomi took her, leaving Odhran and Finn to look

after the girls (8 and 10) with both parents in hospital.

Odhran and Finn stepped up that day. I am so very proud of them

both. They showed a calmness beyond their years and helped keep

Ceilidh Mara and the crew safe. Above all they were rock solid and

reassuring, protecting a very ill Natasha and our two young

daughters, all of whom were in tears and distressed.

The incident is going to be featured on the TV programme “Saving

Lives at Sea”.
