Thoughts From the ChairThoughts From the ChairThoughts From the ChairThoughts From the Chair
Hookers and Strippers and Quilters, Oh My! My what a diverse group of quilters we are. In our midst we have “hookers” and “strippers”. If you question what I am talking about - or are totally aghast - you may have missed the February 23 meeting at which Pam Morris-Stendal announced the upcoming slate of bazaar workshops. Included in the reported offerings were a class on locker “hooking” and a “strip” pieced table runner workshop - prompting a fair amount of laughter from those present. Laughter is also a common ingredient at the workshops themselves. It is so much fun to gather with other members in an informal class set-ting. Good fellowship abounds. New techniques are learned, ideas (and materials) are shared, stories are told, and good food is con-sumed - all while “working” away on our projects. (Sounds a bit like our Mission Statement, doesn’t it). A big round of applause is due our bazaar workshop chairpersons, Pam Morris-Stendal and Linda Saukkonen; the more than a dozen members who volunteered to teach classes; and the thirty-some persons who have participated in the workshops so far. Thanks you all! I look forward to seeing the many finished bazaar items shared at future meetings. Happy quilting (and hooking and stripping), Judy

2010 Sunriver Quilt Show
The Sunriver Quilt Show will take place on August 7th, 2010, and
we need volunteers to make this show a success. Please contact
Pat Pease by phone/email (see roster) to volunteer for the follow-
ing jobs: Quilt Intake/Return, Bazaar Workers, Quilt Hangers,
Quilt Watchers. We need to get an idea of how many quilts will be
shown, so please provide this information as well. We have some
great bazaar classes happening, and hope you will take advantage
of the opportunity to learn some new techniques, and in turn pro-
vide items for the bazaar. We plan to show small quilts in some of
the Sunriver businesses prior to the quilt show, so let Pat know if
you have an appropriate quilt.

INSPIRED BY JEAN QUILTS FOR SOQS
A very big THANK YOU goes to the eleven MMQ members
who have registered nineteen (that’s 19!!) quilts for MMQ’s Spe-
cial Exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in July. Just so
you know, they are Betty Vincent, Francie Patterson, Jane Bowers,
Janice Mottau, Judy Johnson, Kathy Shaker, Linda Saukkonen,
Mary Klein, Pam Morris-Stendal, Stef Hinton and Virlene Arnold.
We expect to be in the same location as in the past couple of
years by Chamber of Commerce on the corner of E. Main & Spruce
Streets. Please stop by and see what our members have pro-
duced.
At our May 11 meeting, I’ll be asking members to sign up for
SOQS quilt watching. We never seem to lack for volunteers,
which the Show’s producers really appreciate. In June, I’ll re-
quest a handful of members to help hang our quilts (early people
get the choice parking places in town!) or to assist in our special
quilt show area. It’s a shady and comfortable spot. Maggy Wilcox

“String Theory”, a quilt made by Pat Pease for the 2008
Shaker Challenge, has been juried into the upcoming
AAAS Art/Science Exhibition at Southern Oregon Univer-
sity in Ashland. The show will run June 13 to September
10, 2010. The exhibit opening coincides with the beginning
of the 91st annual meeting of the Pacific Division of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Exhibits will be presented in seven different galleries on
campus - mirroring the sites of the conference, plus giving
visitors and students some wonderful art exhibits to view
all summer. If you are in Ashland this summer, think
about adding the exhibits to your activities.
CONGRATULATIONS, PAT !!
APPLIQUE GROUP
Applique Group will meet at Janet Hollister’s home on
Tuesday, May 18th. Call her for directions to her home.
SERVICE PROJECT MAY REPORT
Many quilts were turned in last month. To date, I have
received 11 quilts for Meals on Wheels, 16 quilts for
New Generations and 38 Pillowcases. Many thanks to all
who have turned in a project or two. If you need batting
or backing to complete your project, please email Crys
Kyle as that is the easiest way to contact her. The meas-
urements needed are the quilt size. Crys will add addi-
tional inches so you have enough for the layering step.
Kits will be available at the May 25th meeting.

With donations, classroom space, and special activities, the local shops have supported our guild. We appreciate their support and through a monthly news column we want to promote their businesses. Here is what is happening in May.

We will also be having a sale too when it’s all said & done, so watch for that email! If you haven’t been getting our emails lately, please be sure to ask next time you’re in if we have your correct email address - you wouldn’t want to miss anything! JUNE PROGRAM TO FEATURE RETREAT QUILTS AND TEACHERS
The 2011 MMQ Retreat Committee will make a power point presentation about the teachers
and classes that will be at the 2011 MMQ Retreat. The presentation will include photos of
quilts made by the retreat teachers, a biography of the teachers, and examples of the kinds
of quilts to be made in the classes at the Seventh Mountain Resort on April 12, 13 and 14,
2011.
At the retreat, David Taylor from Steamboat Springs, CO, will be doing a trunk show for
the entire guild, followed by two classes making quilts from photographs. Helene Knott
from Oregon City, OR, will be teaching a color theory workshop followed by teaching two
quilts, “Snowflowers” and “Color Squares”. There will be something challenging for every
level of quilter and every interest.
This is an important meeting to find out all about the retreat before you sign up in the fall.
You will be able to ask questions of the committee and even start a lay-away plan for the
retreat fees. Many MMQers have already started laying away $25 a month with our treas-
urer, Cate Brooks, so that their retreat fees will be paid by April 2011.

EDUCATION MEETINGS IN 2010
All Mountain Meadow Quilters education meetings
(fourth Tuesday of the month) will be held at Cascade
Bible Church in La Pine.
2010 Challenge “Starry, Starry Night”
The theme for our 2010 challenge will be “Starry, Starry Night”.
Both traditional and contemporary/art quilts are welcome and quilts
can be an original design or from a commercial pattern. Quilts
should be at least 40” by 40” and should be new work to be
“unveiled” at the Sunriver Quilt Show in 2010. Kathy Shaker pre-
sented an educational program in February on designing star quilts
to give us more ideas.
APNQ IS NOW APWQ - BIG CHANGES!
The Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters is now the Associa-
tion of Western Quilters, with the addition of the following states:
Arizona; California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada. New Mexico;
Utah and Wyoming. A MUCH larger show will begin in 2011 -
August 26-28 at the Tacoma, Washington Convention & Trade
Center, and continue EVERY YEAR at this location. APWQ is
also sponsoring a Summer Symposium - 3 days of quilting and
fiber arts classes at Evergreen State College in Olympia, August
12 to 15, 2010. Sarah Kaufman is among the list of 15 teachers
for this event. Email: www.APWQ.org for more information on
the APWQ quilt show(s) or the symposium of classes.
What an honor for Sarah Kaufman and MMQ!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT MAY NEWSLETTER
Next month, Judy M. Johnson will not be doing the
Newsletter. Janet Hollister will be publishing the
Newsletter, so please get all information to her by the
deadline of Tuesday, May 18th - the third Tuesday of
the Month. The news should cover activities being held
in June. Thank you very much, Judy M.
On May 18th, Valerie Weber and Cate Brooks will teach one
thread catcher design. It is the one with the daisy flower type
pin cushion.
Also at the Firehall from 12:30 - 5:00 p.m.
Pam Morris - Stendal,
The Pot Holder Lady!
She’s made the bazaar
Workshops lots of FUN!!
On May 27th, Sarah Kaufman will be teaching a totebag
workshop . More information about supplies is to follow.
BAZAAR WORKSHOPS
On April 29th, Judy Johnson will offer a second contemporary
table runner workshop. If you didn’t finish the table runner at
the first workshop, you are welcome to attend the second and
complete it there. If you were unable to attend the first con-
temporary table runner class by Judy, you can take it on April
29th. Please contact Judy if you will be attending the second
workshop so she can have the fabric
for you.
On Thursday, May 6th, Francie Patterson will teach the tool
apron class. Fabric should be a bit heavier than quilting cotton:
upholstery fabric, and light denim both work well. You will need
a total of one yard of fabric plus enough for binding - around 1
1/2 yards total of a mix and match. Body pieces will be cut 12”
X22”, so you will need pieces at least that size. I will have some
precut aprons for anyone to just come and sew.
Supply List: sewing machine; scissors & rotary cutter; pencil;
thread; BSS (basic sewing supplies).
These are small, fun and easy to do; all skill levels welcome!
If you have any questions call or email Francie.
Also on Thursday, May 6th, Diana Swenson will teach a Pieces
of Eight Placemats class. The supply list to make 8 - 14” X 19”
placemats is: 8 fat quarters (18” X 22” each)**; 2 yards of
backing fabric; 2 yards Thermolam or InsulBright for batting; 1
yard fabric for bias double-fold binding if rounding the edges
OR enough fabric for straight double-fold binding for rectan-
gular placements.
**Your 8 fabrics should coordinate with each other as all 8 fab-
rics will be in every placemat. I usually use a prominent “theme”
fabric and coordinate it with 7 other fabrics. In addition: sew-
ing machine with walking foot; cutting mat 18 X 24; 24” ruler;
rotary cutter; decorative threads (optional); BSS; freezer paper
will be supplied.
Both of these workshops will be held in the Firehall from 12:30
to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6th.
We are so pleased to welcome our
newest member of Mountian
Meadow Quilters, Janet Ellsworth.
Janet presented our program at MMQ
Guild on April 13th and her quilts
were stunning with gorgeous machine embroidered blocks.
We look forward to getting better acquainted, Janet.
BLOCK OF THE MONTH FOR MAY
Judy M. Johnson will give the Block of the Month demonstration
on May 11. It will be on felted wool - each person will take home
a corner bookmark kit and instructions for felting wool.
