Our focus this year is on developing the strengths of our staff and students, and realizing that as Christian people our confidence, assurance and resilience comes from God. In 2 Timothy 1:6 – 8 it says: “Therefore I remind you to stir up the giſt of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God…” 2 Timothy is wrien by Paul to a younger man, Timothy, to encourage him in his ministry. Paul encourages Timothy with the reminder that God has given us a giſt. A giſt of a spirit, not of fear, but the very opposite of this, a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. We are not to be ashamed of speaking openly about Christ and are encouraged to share in suffering for the gospel. At Illawarra Christian School we strive really hard to ensure that what and how we teach is consistent with God’s word. We want to be developing students who know the gospel, who think about all things in light of the gospel of Christ crucified, who courageously share this with others, and are confident in their faith. As a school we want to stand firm and not compromise the truth of the gospel for the latest educational fad or whatever our dominate secular culture tells us is beer or of greater value. We want to be a school devoted to faithful service of God, striving for excellence in all do, and proclaiming the truth of Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 15:58 Paul urges us “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.” Can I encourage each and every one of you to play an active role in our school community this year? God has given each one of us giſts and abilities and he wants us to use them in service of him and the body of Christ. The part and contribution we each play as parents, students and staff in our school community is very important, no maer how small. We know we are stronger together. Welcome to the new students, parents and staff who join us this year. We trust that you sele in quickly and come to love ICS as much as I do.
