Dear Parents and Carers

We hosted our annual Community Party on Tuesday afternoon. Once again it was a great success, with students, staff and elderly residents from the local area coming together to share tea, listen to some live musicians and be entertained with dramatic sketches. The guests were served afternoon tea by students from a range of year groups, they were given Christmas gifts and cards and they

played several rounds of bingo. The hall was looking very festive with its Christmas Jumper bunting, which this year was provided by the primary pupils. Many thanks to all the staff and students who came together to pull off a wonderful community event!

Last week our new Premises Officer, Jordan Deady, started in post. He sends the following introductory message:

“I am very excited to be joining Isaac Newton Academy’s premises team. I have been doing this job since 2014 and have grown up within the education system as my father is a premises manager of a primary school and my mother is a Headteacher’s PA of a secondary school.

When I first visited Isaac Newton Academy I had good vibes about the school and from the staff and can honestly say, after my first week, my instincts were correct. I look forward to furthering my skills and traits here at Isaac Newton Academy.A bit about myself:

I grew up and went to school in the East End of London, and went to college in Essex to study Sports Science for three years, which was brilliant. I am a fanatic Tottenham fan.

I feel very honoured to be accepted as the newest member of the premises team here at Isaac Newton and look forward to exciting times ahead.”

We have also taken on a Library Assistant, Connor Hanson, in recent weeks. He writes as follows:

“I am delighted to have been accepted into the INA community and have been raring at the opportunity of spending my time in and amongst the books of Isaac Newton’s gorgeous library.

Having only finished my A-levels a few months ago, I find the whole experience slightly surreal and would like to thank all of the staff for welcoming me so very warmly.

I studied BTEC P.E at Caterham High School because of the first of my two greatest passions; football. But my second passion, writing, has brought me to Isaac Newton as I hope to further my knowledge of English Literature, immerse myself in many ‘a classic’ and help the next generation grow into adults with a love of reading and writing!

I am very much looking forward to the future and what wonderful possibilities it may hold for me in the hands of Isaac Newton.”

And Shaima Khanum has recently joined our team of Lunch Supervisors. She sends the following message:

“I feel privileged to be offered a position at INA as a midday supervisor. It’s an exciting prospect starting my new role and being part of a friendly and welcoming team.

I have been living in Redbridge for the last ten years. I was born and bought up in the East End of London in an area called Plaistow; there I attended school and college where I studied IT.

After achieving my IT diploma I went into working in HR in leading supermarkets and as an administrator in various legal firms. It’s only after having my own children that I was inspired to work with children and undertook voluntary work in a private school. I was given the opportunity there to acquire first-hand experience and knowledge of working within children and get a true understanding of the significance of school. I grew up in a loving family and have many happy childhood memories. As children spend a vast amount of time at school, I believe it is vital that every child has a good and healthy learning environment where they will grow up cherishing their time at school and be proud to hold these memories close to heart. It’s these memories that help shape children and transition into adulthood with a positive outlook in life.

As for the future, I look forward to working with such an approachable and friendly team, an inspiring generation of students, and the opportunity to evolve with the school as it grows from strength to strength by making a significant contribution as a member of INA to our next generation.”

We are really looking forward to seeing many of you at our Awards Assemblies on Friday. As reminder that next Friday is a half day, with the pupils being dismissed at 1pm. With best wishes,Rachel Macfarlane, Principal

On Saturday 28 November, I.N.A Year 8 Stem club set out for Space Design competition in the Imperial College in London. To be specific, it was a Micro

competition. On arrival to Imperial College we were split into 2 groups – ‘Titan Technologies’ and ‘Galactic Aviation’. When we got there, we were briefed on what we are supposed to do for the day, and how the day would be structured. Our school was divided into two separate groups in which we were taken away into our work rooms to nominate the roles of a President, Vice President, Director Structural Engineering, Director Operations Engineering, Director Human Engineering and Director Automation Engineering.

Our Design Brief was to design facilities for a spaceport which is capable to house humans and fill their needs like food and exercise. Each director had a different job to do. For example, Director Automation Engineering as the role I was given and this entailed of me having to design robots that would help the spaceport or the people living within this in one way or another. Within our group we were then split up into mini groups where we were taken into mini lecture theatres to be briefed on our individual roles

and how these would affect the project outcome on the whole. Our day then begun with a tiresome few hours of work within our teams our ultimate aim was to prepare our design proposal for our gruesome presentation which we were feeling both scared but excited towards.

When the 2 teams presented their presentations the judges then asked us a variety of questions which demonstrated just how much thought is put into a project like this in NASA. We were put on the spot and challenged to think about our approach to this space station (even think about how we could be sustainable with our resources up on the station). After a long 2 presentations and questioning sessions, Galactic Aviation took the win. Everyone was awarded certificates but the winners received a bag of Celebrations each. Overall the trip was really good and it definitely gave everyone some new experience about design, innovation and the science behind this. Presenting in front of a panel of judges was a good learning curb and we are excited for the next TEEN TECH awards. By Hruday Kinhikar ( Year 8 Stem Club)

We are noticing an increasing number of parents wanting to pay with cash at reception for their child’s school meals.

As you will be aware, we strive to be a cashless school and we are keen to ensure that all parents have access to, and are familiar with, how to load cash on to their child’s wisepay account via the internet.

If you are experiencing difficulties in accessing your child’s account, or would like help or advice or a reminder of your username and password, please contact Ms Khan on 020 8911 6666 or e-mail [email protected]

Many thanks

Mrs Chamberlain

As you are aware, we consulted recently on the material of the Academy headscarves following reports that the material was too slippery. We liaised with the uniform supplier, Khalsa, and subsequently changed the material to a cotton material which is less slippery. However, we have noticed that the material is becoming very discoloured and is affecting the overall look of the Academy uniform so we are going to have to review our decision and potentially revert back to the previous material. However, we would welcome any input or advice from parents before we do so. If you have any ideas, please contact me in the first instance by Friday, 16th January 2015.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Fixtures and ResultsYear 7 Basketball v Oaks Park

The Year 7 team had a much tougher game in their 2nd match against a strong Oaks Park side, after their opening match victory against Seven Kings. Although offensively the team showed some promise and had great energy and enthusiasm, their poor marking led to Oaks Park winning 29 – 13. The team will no doubt learn from this experience in time for their next game on Wednesday 16th against Loxford.

Year 7 Indoor Athletics

The Year 7 Indoor Athletics

team came away from the second round of the competition last night with some great achievements. Representing INA girls were Glory Mondua, Eleanor Brant, Rhea Virdee, Shania Da Costa and Tahseena El-Waily who returned winners of the obstacle race: Glory won 1st in the 2 lap race, Eleanor won 1st place in the 4 lap race and Both Eleanor and Tahseena performed a fantastic team effort to win 1st place in the 8 lap Paarlauf. The boys came first in the obstacle relay - Adam Kothia, Jack Lavin, Daniel Ekwueme and Ramel Shakespeare. Jack Lavin put in an excellent performance in the 6 lap races winning gold, Jahiem Chambers won Gold in the Shot put event, Ramel Shakespeare won gold in the triple jump event.

Really great performances from everyone at Isaac Newton Academy.

Under 13’s Girls Redbridge Handball ChampionsIsaac Newton Academy hosted the under 13’s Redbridge Handball Championships. INA entered two teams into the tournament due to the large numbers at the trials. Both teams did incredibly well in the group stages and both progressed into the Semi Finals. Unfortunately both INA teams had to play each other in the Semi Final to reach the final. This proved to be very intense and competitive game! INA Purple took the lead with an early goal but INA Green showed

a huge amount of perseverance to come from behind to win 2-1. INA Green went onto to victory in the final with a very close 1 nil win over Oaks Park School. INA will now progress to a qualifying stage before then hopefully representing Redbridge at the London Youth Games.

Stand out performers across both teams were; Mya Sehmi, Manisha Mahil, Ammarah Ahmed and Hafsa Nur. Well done to everyone involved was a brilliant tournament with lots of success for INA.

A Warm Invite to INA’s Awards Assemblies – Friday 18th December 2015

On Friday 18th December we will be holding our first awards assemblies of the year. This is an opportunity for the staff, students, governors and parents/carers to formally celebrate our students’ achievements at the end of the autumn term. There will be a separate assembly for each year group. Please note the times as follows:

Year 7 12.00-12.45pmYear 8 11.05-11.50amYear 9 12.00-12.45pmYear 10 11.05-11.50am

At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. It is also a great opportunity for you to see some examples of the activities and events your child has been participated in this term.

We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards assembly for their year group and would like to invite one parent to attend on behalf of the family. If you would like to attend, please ask your son/daughter to collect a ticket for the awards assembly from his/her form tutor. Please request your ticket by Friday 11th December.

Due to limited capacity in the viewing gallery, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like a second place, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket.

I look forward to seeing you on the 18th December.

Community Languages GCSEsDoes your son/daughter speak a language other than English at home e.g. Italian, German, Russian, Urdu, Bengali, Polish, Turkish, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese? Can he/she read and write the language to a good standard?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to these questions, your child may be able to take an early entry GCSE in the language at INA.

Students will need to study independently for the exam. The school will supply past papers for students to practise and will pay the exam entry fees but we are unable to offer any tuition in the language. Students will need to make a commitment to studying independently for the exams.

What happens next?

Ms Spencer will be talking to students about the process in assemblies in the week beginning 17th November. Any students interested in finding out more should attend a meeting with Ms Spencer and Mr Crowther Green on Tuesday lunchtime. Ms Spencer will distribute a past paper GCSE paper and a mark scheme for the language for students to do at home. Parents will need to mark the paper and students should return it to Ms Spencer by Monday 23rd November. The school will then make a decision as to whether the student can be entered for the exams next summer. Mr Crowther-Green will contact parents directly to discuss the decision. Should a student not be deemed ready to take the exam, he/she may be able to take it the following year.

If you would like to would like more information or you would like to discuss the matter further, please contact Ms Spencer or Mr Crowther-Green.

Dear Parents of Y10 studentsReports for Y10 students will be published in early January and have been revised to better support students following GCSE courses. The student’s current progress will be reported in GCSE grades and will include fine grading. A 1 or + after a grade indicates the student is progressing towards the next grade whereas a 3 or – would indicate the grade is not currently secure. See the table below for full details.

The student reports will also feature and attitude to learning for each subjectAttitude to Learning Key:

Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and ability to achieve their full potential.

At Isaac Newton Academy every student is set the target of 100% attendance. We know that attendance has a direct link to progress, and would urge you to really consider if a day off school is necessary.

Well done to 7E, 9S and 10E for meeting their 100% target!

How we build learning power and develop character at Isaac Newton Academy

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” Isaac Newton

The secondary BRIDGES programme commences on Monday 14th September. BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a student's character and learning power and enable them to grow into well rounded individuals and resilient learners.

On a two weekly cycle throughout the year, Year 7 and 8 students are introduced to one or two new habits of mind or learning characteristics that will permeate throughout the curriculum. This will take place through a range of interactive activities. In addition, the students will experience BRIDGES learning objectives in each and every lesson throughout Isaac Newton Academy. Year 9 BRIDGES lessons will focus on strengthening certain BRIDGES learning characteristics through exploration of PHSE topics and themes.

Each fortnight you will find top tips in the newsletter of ways of supporting your child to develop the BRIDGES habits of mind and learning characteristics within the home.
