KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 4 - 2018 Thursday 22 nd February 2018 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A reminder that we have a curriculum day next Monday, 26 th February. Students do not attend school on this day. Staff will be involved in the writing of proficiency scales for the Learning curriculum. Next Wednesday 28 th February is census day in all Victorian Government schools. It is important that all children who are enrolled at Kurunjang PS attend as student allocation funding to schools is calculated on the numbers in attendance. Funding is not available for any student enrolled after this date in the calendar year unless the number enrolled exceeds 30 more students. Wendy McCall and I attended the first meeting of the City of Melton Police and Schools Consultative Committee yesterday. Discussion included the dangers of online activities for children and youth. A federal campaign of ‘You think you know’ promotes intrusive supervision of your children when on electronic devices. It is strongly recommended that no screens be in bedrooms - no computers, Ipads, or phones. Allow their usage in high traffic areas of the house where you can look over your children’s shoulder to ensure they do not fall victim to trolling and grooming by people claiming to be who are they are not. You will be disturbed to learn as I was, of the increase in sexting incidents involving 8-10 year olds. This week all our teachers spoke with the children regarding their safety when going home. The children identified what their individual arrangements were for going home, ie whether they were picked up after school, attended OSHClub (after school care) walked home, caught a bus etc. It was discussed how important it was that they never alter what you have arranged for them, eg by going to a friend’s house or heading off if a carer has not arrived when or where expected. Please confirm with your children, your particular arrangements at the end of the day, and in the event that something delays or changes the arrangement that they should always come into the office so that we can make contact with you. Parents and carers who have had year 5/6 children at Kurunjang in the past 3 years will know of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program which we have at Kurunjang Primary School. The students who go on to Kurunjang Secondary College also are instructed with AVID strategies in their learning and at the end of year 6 have the option of applying for the AVID elective for fulltime instruction in the AVID centre. We were thrilled last year when both schools were selected to be visited by the founder of the AVID program in the United States - Mary Catherine Swanson, when she visited Australian schools and universities. This week we are very pleased to announce that Kurunjang Primary has been invited to be one of 7 AVID schools in Australia to participate in a Primary mathematics trial funded by a generous grant to AVID Australia by the Sidney Myer Foundation. A team of writers and consultants from Victoria, N.S.W., W.A. and N.T. have been selected by AVID Australia to create mathematical curriculum resources for teaching and learning Maths using the AVID strategies and we are very excited to announce that our Leading Teacher for Teaching and Learning, Kim Mitchell has been the teacher selected from PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Victoria. I’m sure you will join me in congratulating Kim if you see her around the school. Congratulations and celebration continue with the presentation of our student leaders this Friday. All year 5/6 students had the opportunity to nominate for positions of leadership in the school which involved preparation of a speech to all year 5/6 students and school staff. We were blown away by the level of preparation which the individual students gave to their speeches and presentations. We commend them all and look forward to presenting them to our school community at a whole school assembly tomorrow afternoon. We hope that as many people who are available will attend to share in this very special event. ~ Learning Together STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS Student of the week awards are made each week and announced in the newsletter on a Thursday.
