One Man's Trash is Another's Treasure: 7th GradeScience Students Provide Food and Water to AfricanCommunities through Terracycling! Students in Mrs. Moore's 7thgrade science class at Irmo Middle School have been collecting Terracy-cle. Terracycle is quite easy to find - in fact, there is probably some in your

house right now! Terracycle, itself, is a company. If you've ever seen the wal-lets made from Capris Sun juice packets, then you may have actually seen some of the items

collected by Mrs. Moore's students. They send their collected terracycle (specified items oftrash) to the Terracycle company, who transforms it into something consumers will buy. But it'swhat happensafterthe terracycle is delivered that really excites Mrs. Moore's students! Each

time you give terracycle materials, the company provides the donor with terracycle points. Thedonor can then use those points to support important causes, such as: planting a tree, giving

geese to a family, or supplying someone with clean water. Mrs. Moore's class chose to give waterto 20 people for a year. Each supply helps one person for one year. Mrs. Moore's class had

enough points to give twenty supplies of water to Sub-Saharan Africa! Another one of Mrs.Moore's classes gave a gaggle of geese to a family. The classes hope that other teachers at IrmoMiddle School will follow Mrs. Moore's example and collect terra cycle, so that more people in

Sub-Saharan Africa will have access to what they need. In Mrs. Moore's science classes, we aredoing global work that MATTERS!

****************************************************************************Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,Irmo Middle School hosted our iNSIDE iAM Showcase a few nights ago. We provided the 400+ parents andcommunity members in attendance with detailed information regarding our amazing magnet school. Sarah Boddy(Expeditionary Learning School Designer) and Matt Frankenbury (Vice President from PITSCO Education) wereon hand to provide a glimpse into the exciting and engaging world of Expeditionary Learning and our planned

STEM Systems and Algebra Readiness labs. By participating in activities like shooting straw rockets, listening tothe music of our first-chair orchestra members, and posing in front of the green screen with our new mediaarts students, and speaking/ writing in mandarin chinese, participants were allowed to experience "in a hands onmanner" the amazing learning products that will be created in all classes next year. In addition to a formal pres-entation, students and parents were able to visit instructional booths in order to experience first hand the highquality work that students are creating in core and encore classes. We invite you to view our recruitmentvideo: AM Recruitment Video 2014from RobertonVimeo. Also, witness first hand in the excitement ineveryones eyes INSIDE iAM!
