AIR SOCIETY ROYAL FORCE GOLFING 2008 NEWSLETTER A recurring theme in recent newsletters hasbeenyour committee's attempts to maintain an attractive golf programme in the face of the ever increasing cost of green fees. This has resulted in also numerous changes overthelastten years or so. Your committee has attempted to alleviate the impactof inflation by providing the prizesfor golfmeetingsand subsidising the cost ofentryfees from Society funds. the two-day Summer Meeting was reduced toone dayand renamed the Championship When Meeting, aone day Summer Meeting was added with theintention of alternating the venuebetween the North Midlands and the South with the Championship Meeting remaining atThe Berkshire. Very Successfulmeetings were held at Newark and Lincoln be buta reasonably in priced venue combined with a located could not conveniently quality course found the South. Last year's newsletter golf informedyou thatin future the Summer Meeting would alternate between Newark,Lincoln andmaybe Sleaford andthe search for a reasonable priced venue inthe South wouldbe abandoned. After many yearsabsence Nairn has been added tothe Tour instead of Forres. As accommodation would not be available for us at RAF Kinloss in May the Tour thisyear willtake place in thefirst week of June. A fairer handicapping system is to be introduced toreplace the punitivesystem which has been in force since the Tour started. Turningto the golfingyear, the performance ofthe year was undoubtedly John Pearce'slevel par round at LundinLinks to score 45 points;the following day with hishandicapreducedfrom 9toscratch scored 27 points over the difficult Jubilee Course at St Andrews. Our congratulations also go to he Mark Oliverforleading our team to a fine win over a strong Royal Air Force side at Woodhall Spa. We also recorded our best ever result inthe Graham Butler Foursomes at Ferndown where we were sixth of is cighteen teams. Although in the final, Steve York tobe congratulated on selectingand loosing leading our team intheBrentKnoll Bowl at Burnham and Berrow. Of our nineteen matches we won seven, lost nine and halved two; a lessthan satisfactory result but great pleasure was taken from recording wins against the AERO Golf Society, Hunstanton, the RAF, the Royal NavyGolfSociety and twice against Sonning toretainthe Clyne Cup.
