WHY SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR THE FULL

SCHOOL UNIFORM?

The year has started with a number of students not wearing appropriate clothing to school. We ask that you support the school in developing our culture of pride for our school and community. The uniform is an integral part of this. The school and parent community over the past three years have worked hard in the rebrand of the school. Reason for wearing our uniform:

SAFETY – students can be recognised quickly as being part of the school

PRIDE – we are a multi-award winning school, proud of our history. We should “look like a proud school”. The full school uniform shows pride.

PROTECTION – the full school uniform material is hard wearing and strong, UV protected. It is economical to buy and looks great. Students who wear it are prepared for learning inside and outdoors.

SHINE GUIDE – “wearing my full school uniform with pride” is part of the shine guide. Students who wear the full school uniform complete this requirement of the shine guide. Teachers and students reflect on the shine guide regularly. It is part of the parents’ role to buy the full school uniform for their child.

ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP FOR LIFE – being neat and ready for learning is a skill that all students should learn for future success. The easiest way to be neat, and ready for learning is to wear the full school uniform.

A reminder of the School’s Sun Safe policy which is NO HAT NO PLAY – Please ensure that students have their hat every day.

Overseas Travel

Many families travel overseas during the year. While we know this may be important for family or religious reasons, the Education Act states that all students who are enrolled at school must attend school every day unless they are sick. Many of our families travel overseas regularly. Recent changes to Department of Education rules means that students who are overseas have their absences marked as absent and they are recorded on the students’ reports. Students who miss school for long periods often have difficulty adjusting when they return, particularly if they did not attend school when they were overseas. Learning in all classrooms is individual. It changes day to day depending on the development of each child’s understanding. For this reason teachers will not provide work for your child if you choose to take them overseas during school time. It is important that families minimise the impact of overseas travel on their child’s learning and try and schedule vacations during school holidays. Students do not receive an exemption from school for family holidays. We do ask that the school is notified when families do go on holiday during school time so that we know where students are and can mark school attendance accordingly . An application of Extended leave is available at the office for travel which needs to be completed and attached with travel documents showing the duration of the child’s absence.

It has been a great start to the year with some Stage 2 students being a part of the Sydney Story Factory Program. Our program is run by the dynamitic and extremely talented John who is from the Nucoorilma Clan of the Gamilaroi Nation. He's been working in the performing arts and Aboriginal cultural education for many years, including as a guide with the Royal National Parks & Wildlife Service and as a presenter and cultural advisor with Sydney Opera House. The students travel to Lakemba Public school every Monday where they look at a variety of weekly newspaper articles from different cities and towns across Australia. All of the students involved in the program will write up an article which will be published in their school newspaper. Watch this space…

Sydney Story Factory Coles Sports for Schools Program Is Back in 2018

BSPS is once again participating in the Coles Sports for Schools program this year. The program gives schools the opportunity to earn sports gear just by collecting vouchers from Coles. You might have noticed a box in our foyer outside the admin office. Please drop your vouchers into this box. We are also looking for parent volunteers to help with the counting of the vouchers. If you are interested please see Eleni or Lisa in the office.

To help schools keep the school zone safer for all pedestrians and drivers there are seven new traffic

infringements with new fines.

None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but in a school zone they each

come with two points.

The changes are:

1. Stopping in intersection - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will

receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they

will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone

they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a

penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they

will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points.

6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will

receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

7. Parallel park close to dividing line - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive

a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

Parent Online Payments - Reminder

Find us at the corner of Canterbury Road and Nelson Avenue, Belmore 2192 T: +61 2 9759 4388 F: +61 2 9740 4323

Reminder that parents can now make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page can be accessed from the front page of the school’s website by selecting ‘Make a Payment’ on the home page. When you access ‘Make a Payment’ you must enter the student’s name, class and date of birth. These details must be entered each time you make a payment as students information is not held within the system. This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner. These details are not passed onto the school. You have the ability to check any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed. As a receipt is issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school. Details of the payment are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. This daily report includes online payments made prior to 6.00 pm the previous day. Payments made after 6.00 pm will NOT be reflected in the next day’s report. Please be mindful of this if there is a payment deadline for an event. All school permission slips allow parents/carers to add the receipt number of online payments to assist with reconciling the payment against the student’s activity. It is important that your child’s permission note is returned to their class teacher once the online payment has been processed and the receipt number written on the note.

School Fees

You should have now received notifciation of 2018 educa-tional expenses, voluntary contribution and annual general permission notices. At Belmore South we pride ourselves on delivering a future focused education to all our students, to enable us to do this we ask for your assistance. The School Learning Pack fee will cover textbooks, books, art and craft and S.T.E.A.M resources your child will use at school every day. The Voluntary Contribution assists the school to purchase play, sport, and music equipment and technology that secures the best future for our students.

School Photo Day

School Photo Day will be on Friday 16 March. Your child will be bringing home an envelope in the next week. Please indicate which photograph package you would like to receive on the envelope provided. Please ensure that if you are paying cash that the correct money is placed inside the envelope as change will not be provided. Sibling photo envelopes will be provided at the office should you require one. All envelopes are labelled with your child’s name. If your child has brought home an envelope with another name, please return in and collect your child’s envelope.

Arriving on Time

We still have a large number of students who are continually arriving late for school. It is essential to establish a regular routine each morning and arriving at school on time is an important part of your child’s morning routine. It is important to be at school on time because: It sets up good habits for the future. It provides social benefits - good play time and

discussion time among friends. The school day usually begins with the teacher giving

out important information e.g. any changes to routines, collection of excursion notes and payments, upcoming events etc.

It is an opportunity for important teacher/student interaction before school.

If you have changed your contact details, please ensure you have updated them at the front office. It is important that we are able to get in touch with all parents / carers in the event that your child becomes ill at school.

All schools are required to provide Special Religious Education (SRE or Scripture). All students attend the scripture group indicated on their enrolment form. If you do not wish your child to attend Scripture lessons in 2018, you must write a letter to your child’s teacher saying this. Scripture teachers are volunteers who are trained by their religious leaders to deliver the message of their beliefs to students in schools. All groups must be registered with the Department of Education. All scripture teachers must have Working with Children Checks and provide photo identification before they are allowed to work in classrooms with students. Classroom teachers remain in the classroom as a supervisor during Scripture lessons.

Entry to Admin Block and School

For safety and security we ask that all parents/carers enter and exit via the front school office door. If you are volunteering at the school or visiting a teacher please report to the office, sign in and collect a visitors badge. There is Strictly NO ACCESS through the hallway and via the back door of the administration building. If you require to use a bathroom, please see the front office for a key to the toilet, located near our school hall. Thank you for your understanding and assisting us to keep Belmore South and our students safe.
