Liston College’s Special Character Statement
This is what the Lord asks of you
“Act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8
Dear Parents and Caregivers Leavers Dinner Last Friday I attended the Leaver’s Dinner which is one of my highlights where I can thank the young men for their contribution to the College and to wish them well in their life outside the Liston Community. It was a great evening with special thanks to Mr Rob McKenty and his team. Year 10 Camp The annual Year 10 Camp was held at Tauwharanui and was very successful – despite some challenging weather! Congratulations to Mr Rory Lord and his team who provided many opportunities for the students to experience activities which they may not have had before. For some boys it was their first time away from home and for many it was their first time having to cook for themselves. The week certainly had many learning experiences for the students in the outdoors! Thanks I would like to thank the many parents and caregivers who have given their time so generously during the year. I am fortunate to have such a committed and supportive community. While the boys may not say it, they do appreciate your involvement in the many activities throughout the year. We could not offer the range of extra-curricular activities without your help. The staff also appreciate your support. I wish to acknowledge the hard work of the staff throughout the year. I have stated many times that the success of a school requires a strong partnership between home and school. We have this at Liston College – and I do not take it for granted. For those staff who are not returning next year I wish every success for the future. To Mr Terry O’Rourke I wish a long and fulfilling retirement. I thank him for his contribution to the College over 18 years. I wish you all a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

1st XI CRICKET 2013
Liston’s 1st XI Cricket team has been accepted into the Premier A Grade competition for 2014. This is the first time in almost a decade that ANY school’s 1st XI has been promoted to the A Grade, demonstrating not only how difficult it is, but also what a great job the Boys have done in the Prem B in 2013.
They have lost only ONE match in the Prem B competition all year and thoroughly deserve their chance at the “big” league.
Special mention must be made of the Year 13 boys who have played particularly well. Ethan Hunt, captain and a fine left-arm opening bowler; Nathan Fletcher whose batting in Term 4 took the matches away from the other contenders for the title. Ben Lister, ably supporting Nathan in run-making, as well as his ability to field and bowl at critical times; not forgetting our U18 Western Districts spin bowler, Saumani Tiai, who tied up the opposition at times. All these boys will do well in their WCC teams in years to come.
Special mention should be made of 3 other players; Luke Devereaux, who bowled so economical as 1st change bowler; Damian Stephen as spinner and low order batsman and Thomas
CRICKET NEWS
Ngatai, who as a year 10 wicketkeeper/batsman performed superbly in his 1st year in the 1st XI. All 3 players were at times the reason for critical wins within the overall competition and supported the senior boys in these close encounters.
Thanks go to Steve Paul for coaching the boys in every match, instilling the boys with the belief and confidence required for success. His tactical astuteness only superseded by his enthusiasm and enjoyment of the sport the boys all love !! Its infectious, and the boys responded brilliantly.
JUNA Grade CRICKET 2013
Craig Borich and Daniel Girven have done a great job with the up and coming Year9/10 cricketers.
Sam Devereaux captained the JUN A grade (sect 1) team well for them to finish a commendable 6th place in a strong grade of Secondary School Cricket.
Players who contributed well regularly would include Isaac Barnes, Junior Matautia, Godinet Tinei, Hamish Malo with Alfred Dela Pena showing real talent as an all rounder in his first year of schools cricket.
Some of these boys will be 1st XI
cricketers relatively soon with the possible responsibility of ensuring Liston retain their standing as a Prem A team in the future years..!
Special thanks go to those families who continually support Liston’s cricket teams in Terms 1&4. The HUNTS/LISTERS/DEVEREAUXs/NGATAIs/O’NEILLs to name a few..! Thanks also to all the Coaches/Managers/teachers and parent helpers who transported the Boys to their Away matches etc.
ROLL ON 2014..!! for another “summer of cricket”.
The LISTON COLLEGE AUSTRALIAN TOUR GROUP leave
for Brisbane on January 13th to compete in the Bi-annual Christian Brothers Cricket Week at St Joseph’s Nudgee College. We wish them luck in their pre-season matches overseas.
QUALITY CATHOLIC BOYS’ EDUCATION In the Edmund Rice Tradition
Ruddell Norris was a conscientious young man. But he was also a shy young man. He found it hard just talk to people, much less to discuss religion with them.
Then one day he got an idea. Ruddell did a lot of reading, and he was aware of the many pamphlets about the Catholic faith. So he decided to set aside a part of his weekly allowance to buy pamphlets.
Ruddell placed his pamphlets in places where he thought people would pick them up and read them. For example, he placed them in waiting rooms and in reception areas.
One day a young woman who was a friend of his family told his parents how she became a convert and how her husband returned to the Church. It all started with a pamphlet, she said. I found it in the hospital waiting room.
You can imagine the boy’s excitement when he learned of the impact just one of his pamphlets had.
What are you doing to make the world a more loving and caring place?
Blessings for today Fr. Kevin Murphy, SM. Chaplain

StudyLink is urging students to get
their applications for Student Loans
and Student Allowances in by
Monday 16 December. There's
plenty that has to be done after
they hit submit, so they need to
allow enough time for it to happen.
Having your student finances sorted
is a key contributor to a stress-free
and successful start to tertiary
study.
Students can apply now even if they haven't decided where or what they'll be studying - they can change this later. It's more important that they allow enough time for the application process to be completed before the start of their 2014 study. Apply now at www.studylink.govt.nz

QUALITY CATHOLIC BOYS’ EDUCATION In the Edmund Rice Tradition
The Year 10 Japanese class field trip to Queen Street was a very enjoyable experience, going up and down the street searching for Japanese related business. We went to the Japanese supermarket “JAPAN MART”, Japanese daily goods shop “MADE IN NIPPON”, the Japanese $3 shop, and my favourite Martial Arts Shop to find new words to add to our Japanese dictionary. It was interesting to find out what Japanese shops sell and learn some more of the language that we have not learned in class.
The Tanpopo Restaurant was very nice, a bit cramped but authentic. We had rice and dumplings for starters and then each had our different flavour of “raamen” noodles, which was very nice.
