"SpaceX successfully launches and recovers Falcon 9 for CRS-12"

--ANUSHA S K (Alumni 2011-14)

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, better known as SpaceX, is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company. It was founded by Elon Musk.

Background:

Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX which was capable of

"Reflight" unlike other rockets. SpaceX believes rocket reusability is the key breakthrough

needed to reduce the cost of access to space and enable people to live on other planets.

SpaceX CRS-12, also known as SpX-12, is a Commercial Resupply Services mission to the

International Space Station launched on 14 August 2017.

After approval from the FAA, SpaceX accomplished its first successful landing at the

complex with Falcon 9 Flight 20.

"SpaceX successfully launches and recovers Falcon 9 for CRS-12" SpaceX has successfully launched yet another rocket, this one carrying a Dragon capsule loaded with over 6,400 pounds of cargo destined for the International Space Station. That makes an even dozen for ISS resupply missions launched by SpaceX under contract to NASA, and this is the most significant thus far in terms of potential scientific impact. CRS-12’s payload was over 75 percent committed to hauling equipment and material for experiments and scientific research, which is more than on any other previous mission. The rocket successfully launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 12:31 PM EDT, and Dragon deployed from the second stage as planned. Dragon will rendezvous with the ISS on August 16 for capture by the station’s Canadarm 2 robotic appendage, after which it’ll be attached to the rocket. After roughly a month, it’ll return to Earth after leaving the ISS with around 3,000 pounds of returned cargo on board, and splash down in the Pacific Ocean for recovery. The launch also included an attempt to recover the Falcon 9 first stage for re-use at SpaceX’s land-based LZ-1 landing pad. The Falcon 9 first stage returned to Earth as planned, and touched down at Cape Canaveral roughly 9 minutes after launch.

The discipline of knowledge Engineering –Dr D.V Ashoka

The discipline of knowledge Engineering (KE) grew out of the initial work on expert systems in the seventies. With the growing popularity of Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS), there arose also a need for a systematic approach for building such systems, similar to methodologies in main-stream Software Engineering (SE). Over the years, the discipline of KE has evolved into the development of theory, methods and tools for developing knowledge-intensive applications. KE provides guidance about when and how to apply particular knowledge-presentation techniques for solving particular problems

Building a KBS means building a computer model with the aim of understanding problem-solving capabilities comparable to a field expert. It is not intended to create a cognitive adequate model, i.e. to simulate the cognitive processes of an expert in general, but to create a model which offers comparable results in problem-solving for problems in the area of concern. While the expert may consciously articulate some parts of his knowledge, he will not be aware of an important part of this knowledge since it is hidden in his skills. This knowledge is not directly accessible, but has to be built up and structured during the knowledge acquisition phase. Therefore this knowledge acquisition process is no longer seen as a transfer of knowledge into an appropriate computer representation, but as a model construction process. Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, learning, communication, association and reasoning. The term knowledge is also used to mean the self-assured understanding of a subject with the ability to use it for a specific purpose. Knowledge can be divided into two kinds: tacit and explicit knowledge. Tacit knowledge is knowledge that people carry in their minds and is, so, difficult to access. Tacit knowledge is considered more appreciated because it provides context for people, places, ideas, and experiences. Effective transfer of tacit knowledge generally requires extensive personal contact and trust .Tacit knowledge is not easily shared. Tacit knowledge consists often of habits and culture that one cannot recognize by themselves. Knowledge that is easy to communicate is called explicit knowledge. The process of transforming tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge is known as codification or articulation. Explicit knowledge is knowledge that has been or can be articulated, codified, and stored in certain media.

KE for information systems is a long-term, multi-person task that requires tight control and memorization not only of what knowledge is acquired but also of why and how it is acquired. There are some work propose a software process data model as the foundation of a knowledge-based software information system that emphasizes control, support and documentation of design decision-making and tool integration in information systems environments.

Knowledge Management (KM) is an emerging discipline that promises to capitalize on organizations’ intellectual capital. The idea of taming knowledge and putting it to work is not new; phrases containing the word knowledge, such as knowledge bases and KE, existed before KM became popularized. The artificial intelligence community has long dealt with knowledge representation, storage, and application. Software engineers have engaged in KM-related activities aimed at learning, capturing, and reusing experience, even though they were not using the phrase “knowledge management.” KM is unique because it focuses on the individual as an expert and as the bearer of important knowledge that he or she can systematically share with an organization.

Further Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining.
