Most of you will be aware that after the next AGM several of our most dedicated and long serving officers, will have to stand down. (Chairman’s Report page 2)
Without these officers we simply cannot function. Do you want to still have a Newhaven and Peacehaven U3A? If the answer is “yes” then someone will have to come forward for these posts.

meeting the other U3A members.
Do come along!
Monthly Meetings
I would like to welcome Muriel Weller back on to the Committee. She has already organised two outings for us recently and I hope our U3A will continue so that she can carry on her good work.
Unfortunately we have lost our Peacehaven Book Group. Many thanks to Jean White for organising this for a number of years. I am disappointed that no other members of the group felt able to contin-ue her excellent work and commitment.
Both Sharon Ahearn and Carole York have resigned from the Committee for health reasons, but Sharon will continue to arrange our lunches. Roma and Mick Humphrey will be standing down in September. A special thank you to two of our most long standing Committee Members. Cora Stinton and I have to stand down in September as per our Constitution. This is your last chance to come forward and help to keep our U3A going.
As this will be my last Chair’s report I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the Committee Members and Group Leaders, past and present, who for the last eight years have supported me in helping to keep our U3A going. It is now up to others to come forward and show that they have the same commitment to our U3A.

This fantasy ballet will sweep us all away to a fairy tale world where toys spring to life. We will travel through the land of snow to an enchanted place where the magic begins. We hope you can join us.

Days Out
Outing to Saint Hill Manor
It was a really nice day for our first trip out that Muriel and I had organised for quite a while. We were lucky with the weather too.
Firstly we had a walk around East Grinstead with time for a coffee and snack before going on to Saint Hill Manor, a grand building constructed in 1792 and surrounded by 59 acres of parkland and now the British headquarters of the Scientology movement founded by L Ron Hubbard there.
We had a very informative guide who gave us a tour of the building – the upkeep is impeccable – eve-rywhere gleamed. As well as Mr. Hubbard there had been many notable previous owners including the Maharaja of Jaipur who added the impressive marble columns in the entrance hall and made other In-dian style additions to the house. L Ron Hubbard bought the estate from him and made his home there when he settled in England from America, where he was born and he himself made many altera-tions in keeping with the building.
This enigmatic man had many adventures in his life and used these experiences in the countless books he wrote. He was a family man and had four children, 2 girls and 2 boys. The rooms are homely and have a lived in feel and his office is full of the latest gadgets of his day. He played the piano too, and he also had a movie camera and a screen would roll down from the wall to show his children cartoon films. One of his daughters still returns sometimes and she told our guide that they had great fun as children and often would slide down the stairs. They loved the house and the beautiful garden.
We finished our day with a very nice cream tea in the beautifully laid out Monkey Room, the walls of which are colourfully painted by John Spencer Churchill, nephew of Sir Winston Churchill. The mon-keys depict many famous people of the time.
We had a pleasant journey home through the countryside.

Outing to British Wildlife Centre and Haskins Garden Centre
This was a really nice trip. First we had lunch and time to look around at Haskins’ Garden Centre which is a big one with lots to see.
We then went on to the British Wildlife Centre which is quite nearby at Newchapel, Lingfield in Surrey. This was founded by David Mills in 1997, converting a former dairy farm into one of the finest collec-tions of native wildlife in Britain with over 40 different native species. Tiny mink ran along little en-closed runways. There were so many lovely and different deer, many looked just like the famous “Bambi” and others had huge antlers, which the guide told us they eat when discarded. They also have a big collection of owls and when it was time for tea she came in with a lovely tawny owl and many of us took photos.
It was especially good that the tour was just for us and we had a super young guide, who was so in-formative, taking us around. It was very interesting to see two wild cats; they just sat there looking like our next door tabby but, and it’s a big but, if one went near them they snarled and hissed, claws out. That ended the likeness immediately! We were lucky to see the otters being fed too.
We had such a good time and the weather was overcast, which really helped us to walk around, alt-hough it was still very warm.

Most people know that claustrophobia is the fear of being confined in a small place.
Can you guess these other phobias? Good luck, Maggie
