AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM OUR COLLEGE PRINCIPAL'Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.' 1 John 4:7-8.

This week across Australia, many schools are

participating in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence in Schools – Friday, 16 March. The theme is, ‘My World’ free from bullying’.

During this week and next week, our College will be surveying students regarding aspects of bullying and cyberbullying that are affecting them. These surveys are carried out three times each year, and have been part of our ongoing strategy across several years, to ensure that we are addressing bullying in our school from multiple angles. After the webinar, discussion was held around what to do to report bullying or cyberbullying, and where to go for support.

LET'S STAMP OUT BULLYING IN OUR SCHOOL!

Parents and students are invited to participate in the range of activities that are planned for this week around the Bullying. No Way! Campaign.

Check out the 'Bullying No Way' website for parent, and student resources. It is very helpful in understanding what it is and what we can do about it.

We have included on this page a few things parents can begin to do.

1. Listen calmly and get the full story.

2. Reassure your child that they are not to blame.

3. Ask your child what they want to do about it and how you can help.

4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies.

5. Contact the school.

6. Check in regularly with your child.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

QUESTIONS AFTER SCHOOLParents, grandparents, and carers love to check in with their child to see how their day at school has gone. It is often not easy to elicit a response that leads into genuine communication. Families can feel pressure from a growing number of sources and regular, healthy communication can foster a strong protective factor during these times.

Below are some ideas that you may like to use to initiate conversation with your child. You can find the full list of fifty questions to ask after school on HerViewFromHome.com.

• What made you smile today?• Can you tell me an example of kindness you

saw/showed?• What did you do that was creative?• Who did you sit with at lunch?• Was anyone in your class gone today?• Tell me something you know today that you

didn’t know yesterday?• Did you like your lunch?• What was the hardest rule to follow today?• If you could change one thing about your day,

what would it be?• What made your teacher smile? What made

her frown?• If you could switch seats with anyone in class,

who would it be? And why?• What kind of person were you today?

I would also enjoy feedback around questions that you have found helpful when talking with your child. Perhaps we could update and share this with others in our school community.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH Why not get involvedStudents in our community are involved in many activities such as, photography, sport, hospitality and service, church leadership, music. There are many activities on the list that can qualify you for the Duke of Edinburgh or the Bridge Awards. Why not you?

What is the Bridge Award? The Bridge Award is a positive youth development program that is both fun and challenging. It offers young people the opportunity to gain new skills, improve their physical fitness, participate in community service and develop a spirit of adventure. The Bridge Award is available to young people aged between 11 and a half and 25 years. It builds confidence and resilience and is a great introduction for the many young people who progress on to the Bronze level of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (from 14 years).

What’s involved? There are two levels of the Bridge Award and each level has four sections. Participants choose from a range of different activities and create their own unique program, with goals that match their individual interests and abilities.

Level One: encourages young people to have new experiences, gain new skills, become more confident and achieve greater independence.

Level Two: builds on the skills gained in Level One and provides young people with opportunities to develop these further and keep having fun.

What is The Duke of Ed?The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an exciting international development program for young people. Anyone between the ages of 14 and 25 can take part and the best bit is you choose your own activities and set your own goals.

Through The Duke of Ed, you can learn new skills, explore new places and meet new friends along the way. If there is something you have always wanted to try, The Duke of Ed may be just the motivation you need to get started. The Duke of Ed has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Caloundra Christian College is an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award facilitator. If you would like to get involved in either of these initiatives, please contact Mr Rob Antcliff at the College, on 5436 6777 or email Mr Antcliff at [email protected].

2018 ROTARY YOUNG DRIVER AWARENESS (RYDA) PROGRAMLast week, Year 11 students participated in the RYDA program. The program aims to inform students of good driver practice by highlighting crucial road safety messages. Students experienced six interactive sessions focusing on Speed and Stopping – the physics of stopping; Hazards and Distractions; Personality Testing; Rights and Responsibilities – Police talk on risk behaviour; After the Crash – a personalised account of how crashes impact people’s lives and the emotive story of Genevieve and the ripple effect of car crashes. Rotary hosts the RYDA program at Corbould Park Racecourse each year. In the images below, the cohort listen attentively to the Speed and Stopping presentation whilst Denika and Natasha give a thumbs up to the program.

PRIMARY SPORTS UPDATEUnder 12 Basketball reportOn Monday, 12 March the CCC team took on the Pacers. Playing without standout Rain de Beer, the girls showed increased confidence, with Matilda and Scarlett both scoring. Drew and Danny also contributed to the 13 point total. The Pacers once again dominated the game, winning convincingly. Matilda was awarded the Most Improved Player award.

Under 14 Basketball reportOn Monday, 5 March our team took on the Lakers. The team played with their characteristic aggression and focus; however, were once again let down by poor shooting. Their physical presence, passing, and anticipation are improving every game; once they dedicate themselves to shooting and lay-up practice, we will see some victories. CJ Udeh was in incredible form, scoring 12 of the team’s 14 points. His determined effort resulted in him claiming the MVP for this game. The full time score was 30-14 to the Lakers.

On Monday, 12 March the CCC team played against the Pistons. Max Gordois played with freedom and confidence, top scoring for CCC. Samuel Briggs and Isaac Westbrook also found the basket, but the Pistons were extremely difficult to defend against, and ended up with the win. Corey Simpson played with courage, and was selected as the Most Committed Performer.

CHAPPY’S CORNERLast week, I was very blessed to attend both Year 4 and Year 5/6 camps. There is something very special about quality time, and that's exactly what I experienced this past week. There were so many wonderful memories made at camp; however, I have to say, the students’ enthusiasm to take on new challenges, was what inspired

me the most. Even though the rain bucketed down, it did not dampen their experience. I was so proud of each and every student. They all stepped out of their comfort zones in one way or another. I was not let off the hook either. After I challenged the whole Year 4 cohort to give the giant swing ago, I was called to the same challenge. I thought my excuses to ‘not’ participate were pretty good but it didn't wash with the students, so up I went. Thank you Year 4 for your encouragement – you made me brave on Friday. Rumour has it that Mrs Lockyer took on the even bigger swing at Tallebudgera camp – great job! It's so good for students to see their teachers having fun alongside of them. A little side note – the chicken schnitzels were much bigger on the Mapleton camp – sorry to deliver that news to you Mr Strickland!

This coming Friday, 16 March, our College will participate in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence in Schools. The national day is a positive day that provides a focus for school communities to talk about the importance of working together against bullying and violence. As a College, we totally support this initiative and stand against bullying. We are constantly working with staff and students to create a safe and loving College.

On Thursday, 1 March, a team of students and I were privileged to take part in the Share-A-Meal program. We cooked and served a meal to those who are experiencing some sort of hardship. I was so proud of the way the students conducted themselves. So many people commented on how caring and polite our students were. Thank you so much for giving up your own time to serve others. We will be participating again in Term 2.

Only a few more weeks until we break for Easter. Whilst we all look forward to the holidays, it is very important to take time to focus on the reason for the holiday...JESUS!
