Intern For A Day September Sign-Ups Now Open for October Experiences

USF Career Services’ Intern For A Day program offers students the ability to spend either a day or half-day shadowing professionals in work environments to learn more about a day in the life of that career. USF Career Services offers it to students in the early stages of their academic and career journey from a “major doesn’t matter” perspective in order to enable students to gain exposure to career opportunities within their specific interest areas, but not necessarily connected to a specific major.

Please visit our website, internday.usfcs.info, for more information as well as access to the online orientation program for students. Contact Christina Ingrassia, Assistant Director for Internships and Career Readiness at [email protected] with any questions you may have.

At Your Service

What can your Career Consultant do for you?

Career Consultants are our office’s first line of support for faculty, academic advisors, and other staff in the colleges. Career Consultants also serve the staff in non-academic departments on campus such as Students with Disabilities Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Veteran Success, and the USF Libraries, just to name a few.

Our Consultants have completed graduate education in the career development field, and many of them have completed additional training or certification in areas of specialization related to the services we offer students. Because of this, Career Consultants are an excellent resource as you consider adding career related content, training, or materials to your courses and programs.

Your Career Consultant can deliver engaging presentations to your students as a part of your regular syllabus or at a student organization meeting or event. And instead of canceling a class, consider inviting your Consultant to speak to your students about current trends in the industries related to their majors. Other topics we would be happy to present on include:

What Can I Do With a Major In…

Finding Career-Related Experiences - part-time jobs, internships, Co-op, job shadowing, informational interviewing, and community service

Graduate School Search and the Application Process

Navigating the Job Search Process - resume/cover letter development, employer research, interview preparation, and salary negotiation

To see a full list of presentation offerings, visit presentations.usfcs.info.

To schedule a presentation, visit requestpresentation.usfcs.info.

Our Career Consultants also offer student meet-ups on career topics, hold drop-in hours, and meet with students individually to prepare them for gaining career-related experience or finding full-time employment.

The Career Consultants also send email notifications about upcoming career events, employer visits, internship and full-time employment opportunities to USF students through Handshake. So please remind your students to check their USF email accounts to stay on top of all the great resources available to them.

Programs & Services

Career Readiness Badging Program Helps Students Connect Academics with the Essential Skills

Students often struggle with making meaningful connections between their academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities and the world of work during interviews for internships and jobs. To address this challenge, Career Services is launching an all new Career Readiness Badging Program.

The program assists students by connecting the work that they are already doing here at USF with the eight career readiness competencies defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). These essential skills were developed by NACE in consultation with faculty, higher education professionals, and employers and form a framework to bridge the gap between their on-campus experience and their future career.

The program organizes the work students are already doing in class, in student leadership roles, in student employment and internship roles, and combines them with a wide variety of supplemental learning opportunities offered by university partners. This program also serves as a gateway to assist students who may need additional help in acquiring or refining essential skills which they may need for life after USF.

To learn more about this program, please visit careerready.usfcs.info or contact Lynn Chisholm, Director of Internships and Career Readiness at [email protected].

The Revature PartnershipTechnology and Coding Careers for Any Major

USF and Revature have partnered to provide no-risk pathways to a high-demand technology career for USF System students and alumni regardless of their undergraduate major!

Students and alumni who are interested in a career in programming, design, or business analysis can enroll in RevaturePro Online, the company’s online training platform that supports all coding experience levels, from beginner to advanced. Their innovative courses teach front-end development languages, such as Microsoft. NET and Java, through guided projects and assessments. Students progress through the program at their own pace while receiving mentorship from industry leaders, continuing education, and developing a new skillset, which they can add to their resume. Some tracks even lead to industry recognized certifications!

RevaturePro Bootcamp, an intensive 12-week program, held right here in Tampa, further prepares students for a career in software development. USF System graduates, who completed RevaturePro Online or earned a degree in a STEM major, are guaranteed an interview for the bootcamp. If selected, the bootcamp is free to attend and includes housing and a weekly living allowance. In return, students are placed on paid assignments with leading national and international companies.

You and your studens can learn more about this exciting new partnership at https://revature.com/usf.

It All Starts with a Handshake

Apps for Success

Handshake is the online career management system for students at the University of South Florida and is now being used System-wide at all three campuses: Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee.

Handshake is the primary tool for students to search and apply for internships, Co-op, part-time, and full-time jobs. Since launching Handshake on the Tampa campus in the Summer of 2016, we have added a number of new employers, including: Hershey Foods, the United Nations, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, McKinsey & Company, and Google.

To get the most out of Handshake, we need to encourage students to upload a current resume and keep their online profile up to date. Students should also allow their online profile and resume to viewable by employers so that recruiters can find them and directly share opportunities!

Students can also use Handshake to:- Keep track of their appointments with Career Services in one location- Learn which employers are attending upcoming Career & Internship Fairs- View upcoming local and on-campus career events- Research contact information for local and national employers

An account is created automatically for all active USF Tampa students at the start of their first semester. To access their account, students should log into MyUSF, go to the My Resources tab, and select the option to “Find A Job (Handshake).” This will log them into Handshake.

We know our students are more tethered to their mobile devices than ever before. To make sure that we are meeting them where they are at, our office is currently encouraging students to download and install the following apps. Visit apps.usfcs.info for direct links to the app stores.

Handshake offers an iOS app that students can use to find jobs, research companies, view upcoming events, and view their appointment details with their Career Consultants.

Career Fair Plus is an app where students can view the list of employers attending our events, see details about what they are hiring for, and quickly access a list of favorites.

MoBull Wellness helps students understand their overall wellness with self-assessments in each area, and then refers students to services across campus to help them get “well” soon! This app was created by three USF Computer Science & Engineering students in partnership with Health and Wellness and Career Services.

The Canvas app allows students to view their course information and assignments from their phones. They can use it to see updates, complete assignments, participate in discussions, and more!

Badgr is an app for students to track, manage, and share the badges earned in the Career Readiness Badging Program. Students can share their progress with future employers by adding their earned badges to their LinkedIn profile and social media sites like Facebook.
