Law students had the opportunity to attend oral arguments.The Legal Analysis Research and Writing professors incorporat-ed the oral arguments into their class by requiring mandatoryattendance at one of the hearings. Students also had theopportunity to have lunch with the judges’law clerks wherethey obtained inside information on clerkships and how to goabout securing a clerkship position. In addition,after oralarguments were heard,students were able to attend a presenta-tion by the judges on what they want to hear and what theylook for in appellate arguments.

10th CircuitHears Arguementsat Washburn LawWashburn University School of Law and the Centerfor Excellence in Advocacy again hosted the U.S.Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit,April 12,2006,at a special session in Topeka,Kan. Arguments wereheld in the Robinson Courtroom and BianchinoTechnology Center. The judges who presided atWashburn Law to hear oral arguments were ChiefJudge Deanell Reece Tacha,Senior Judge Bobby R.Baldock and Judge Carlos F. Lucero. The TenthCircuit previously sat at Washburn Law in October2004.

AnnualKuetherGolf TournamentThe Annual John Kuether Memorial Golf Tournamentwas held April 1,2006,at the Lake Shawnee GolfCourse,Topeka,Kan. This year the tournamentbrought in 110 players and contributed over $2,900to the John Kuether Scholarship Fund. The 4-personscramble started with a continental breakfast andshotgun start at 9 a.m.and concluded with lunchafter the scramble. The first place team in the championship flight consisted of Steve Tilton ‘88,Bob Hiatt ‘88,Don Reif ‘88 and Rusty Williams.

The first place team in the 2nd flight included students Karen Quintelier, Jody Berbermeyer,Kristen Kellems and Matt Todd. Student coordinator,

Ho Son, worked hard to make the tournament a success.

He was joined by student committee members JodyBebermeyer, Kim Bieker, Shannelle Gunn,Shelby Grau,Ryan McGuirk,Molly McMurray, Karen Quintelier, Erin Riffey, Sheri Siemens and Jacob Sweat.

The Honorable Kay McFarland‘64, Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court,

received the Distinguished Alumni Award.Recipients of this award are chosen for theirexceptional accomplishments in their professional,business or academic careers. Chief JusticeMcFarland was the first woman to be elected to ajudgeship in Shawnee County, the first woman dis -trict court judge in Kansas,the first womanappointed justice of the Kansas Supreme Courtand the first woman appointed Chief Justice.McFarland graduated magna cum laude fromWashburn University with dual majors in Englishand History-Political Science. In 1964 she receivedher law degree from Washburn Law, was admittedto the Kansas Bar and entered private practice inTopeka. In 1971 she was elected judge of the pro-bate and juvenile courts of Shawnee County.

In January 1973,she became judge of the newlycreated Fifth Division of the District Court inTopeka. On Sept.19,1977,she was appointed bythe governor to be a justice of the Kansas SupremeCourt and became Chief Justice of the SupremeCourt on Sept 1,1995,upon the retirement of theHon.Richard W. Holmes.

Dupre remarked,“Chief Justice McFarland has hada professional career filled with many significantaccomplishments. And so many times she was thefirst. Today we have the pleasure of bestowing onyou our Distinguished Alumni Award.”

Allan Caldwell ’73 , received the

Distinguished Service Award for his service to Washburn Law, the legal profession and commu-nity. His service to Washburn Law includes servingon the Washburn Law School Alumni AssociationBoard of Governors from 1993 to 2003 in variouscapacities including vice-president and president.He served as president of the Washburn LawSchool Foundation from 2003 to 2006. Caldwellestablished the endowed Alan and Valle CaldwellLaw Scholarship during the CentennialCelebration.

The Washburn University School of Law AlumniAssociation presented its annual awards at theWashburn Law luncheon held in conjunction withthe Kansas Bar Association annual meeting inOverland Park, June 10, 2006.

The law school Alumni Association presented theDistinguished Service Award, Distinguished AlumniAward and the Honorary Life Member Award whichare given annually. Duke Dupre, president of theWashburn University School of Law AlumniAssociation, presented the awards.

2006 VisitingAdvocateThe Center for Excellence in Advocacy hosted George Barton‘77 as its Visiting Advocate,Feb.7,2006,at Washburn Law.Barton met with students and faculty to discuss the develop-ment of a contract case,including evaluating claims,the litiga-tion process and what it means to be a litigator. Barton alsoaddressed the importance of ef fective drafting as a litigatorand shared his experiences developing,litigating and winninga landmark case.

D. 1999) which provided asubstantial punitive damage ve rdict against a major coal company.

Caldwell previously served as general counsel forKoch industries. He received a bachelor’s degreefrom Evangel University and earned his law degreefrom Washburn Law in 1973. Caldwell was a judi-cial clerk for Justice J. Richard Foth of the KansasSupreme Court before joining Koch.

Dupre stated,“I do not remember a time whenAlan was not working for the betterment of ourlaw school. And on behalf of the board of gover-nors,let me say we will miss him,his advice andcounsel,and his leadership.”

Dennis R. Honabach, Dean of

Washburn University School of Law received theHonorary Life Membership Award for his dedicatedservice to his profession,community andWashburn Law. This award is given to a non-alum.Honabach was instrumental in developing the newWashburn Law Centers for Excellence includingthe Business and Transactional Law Center,TheCenter of Excellence in Advocacy, and the Childrenand Family Law Center. He has also endowed theDennis and Carol Honabach Business andTransactional Law Fund during the CentennialCelebration. Honabach will leave Washburn Law inAugust when he takes over as dean of the SalmonP. Chase College of Law at Northern KentuckyUniversity.

Dupre stated,“During his deanship enrollment hasincreased 15 percent and the credentials of enter-ing student have also increased. He led the lawschools Centennial Celebration and oversaw a $5.2million fundraising effort to date.His tenure atWashburn Law has moved the law school forward,and thanks to his fine efforts,Washburn Law isready for the next 100 years.”

The 2006 Foulston Siefkin Lecture was given by Marc I. Steinberg,February 24, 2006, at Washburn University School of Law. Steinberg,the Rupert and Lillian Radford Professor of Law at SouthernMethodist University, discussed “The Corporate Attorney as a‘Moving’ Target: Liability and Ethical Dilemmas.” Steinberg teaches inthe corporate and securities law areas.

Steinberg received his J.D. from UCLA in 1975 and a LL.M. from YaleUniversity in 1977. Following law school, Steinberg served as lawclerk to Judge Stanley N. Barnes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for theNinth Circuit and aslegislative counsel toU.S. Senator RobertP. Griffin. He laterworked as specialprojects counsel andconfidential legaladviser to the gener-al counsel at the U.S.Securities andExchangeCommission. Otherteaching positionsprior to SMU includeprofessor of law atthe University ofMaryland School ofLaw, visiting profes-sor at the WhartonSchool of theUniversity ofPennsylvania, visitingassociate professor atthe National LawCenter, George Washington University, and adjunct professor atGeorgetown University Law Center. Steinberg has lectured and con-sulted on company law in Australia, England, Finland, Germany,Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and Taiwan.He is also a Visiting Professorial Fellow in International SecuritiesRegulation for the Center for Commercial Law Studies at theUniversity of London. Steinberg has authored more than 100 lawreview articles in addition to ten books. He is editor-in-chief of theSecurities Regulation Law Journal, serves on the advisory boards ofthree other journals in the corporate and securities law area and ofThe International Lawyer . Steinberg is a member of the AmericanLaw Institute.

Each year since 1978 the Wichita law firm ofFoulston Siefkin has generously sponsored theFoulston Siefkin Lecture Series. This lectureseries brings a prominent legal scholar toWashburn University School of Law to challengeand enhance the legal thinking of our studentsand faculty. The visiting scholar delivers a lec-ture and also provides an article for the nextvolume of the Washburn Law Journal.
