2017 NEWPORT BEACH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL 3

1801 BAYSIDE DRIVE, CORONA DEL MAR, CA 92625

We are very pleased to welcome you to the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival, a

Balboa Yacht Club event.  is Festival honors these wooden-boat works of art and salutes their owners who with

great devotion, pride and love, maintain these boats in excellent condition so that we

can share them with you today. What makes this event so unique is that every boat comes with a story.  In some cases

these boats are older than us and have lived either a dour or an incredible and abundant

life traveling the world’s waterways and oceans with titans of industry or government on

their decks.  In some cases, a boat might hav e been given up as junk by one owner only

to be seen and recreated as a vision of beauty, excitement and passion by another owner.

In some cases, the boat has never le one family and is passed down by generations

to love use and cherish.  In all cases every wooden boat at this event demands

meticulousness and hard work. at is what you will see today.  But I recommend you

go beyond what you see and ask the owner about the boat’s story, and you just might see

her come to life. I’ve been involved with this Wooden Boat Festival for four years now.   is year, along

with Co-Chairman Patrick McCormack, I’m honored to have helped build this event

on Ralph Rodheim’s vision to what has now become a three-day concours d’elegance

all about wooden boats.  Partnered with other Newport Harbor stakeholders and

supported by the City of Newport Beach, plus generous sponsors and 120 tireless

volunteers, this is now a true community event.   is year I will pass on the baton that

Ralph passed to me to the capable hands of Patrick McCormack. I am humbled by the

experience and grateful for our community and your support.

Enjoy the Festival!!

2017 NEWPORT BEACH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL4

Dear Festival Visitors,

On behalf of our yacht club members, welcome to Balboa Yacht Club and our 4th Annual

Wooden Boat Festival. Founded in 1922 as the Southland Sailing Club, then established as

the Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) in 1926, BYC had its rst proper Clubhouse just across the way

on Little Balboa Island. Today BYC is a thoroughly modern yacht club with a rich heritage:

a community of 800 members and their families who love being on the water as racers,

cruisers, anglers, rowers and paddlers. In short, we are a community of dedicated friends

sharing a passion for excellence in yachting. Our annual Wooden Boat Festival is one of the

many ways in which we express and celebrate that passion.

e life of our Club comes from our members’ creativity and willingness to volunteer. ere

is no better example of this than our member and friend, the late Ralph Rodheim. Ralph

rst envisioned the Wooden Boat Festival as a Concours d’Elegance, showcasing the art and

cra smanship of wooden boat building of a largely bygone era. We believe that in just four

years, we achieved Ralph’s vision for the Festival as it has become one of our Club’s signature

events and has formed yet another BYC tradition.

We are so grateful for the support the Wooden Boat Festival receives from the City of

Newport Beach, the community at large and our generous sponsors. Right from the start,

the Festival was widely recognized for its signi cance in honoring the heritage of boating,

timeless cra smanship, quality restoration and preservation. anks to our supporters, we

can provide you the opportunity to be right here on Newport Harbor, enjoying the views and

activities that this great harbor and event o er.

Again, welcome to BYC and thank you for being a part of the Festival. We hope you

enjoy the experience and maybe meet a new friend or two to share the lure of the sea and

appreciate beautiful boats.

Curlew was designed by John G. Alden and launched in 1926 in Wiscasset, Maine. She is an 82’ schooner with a beam of 14.8” and has proven to be amazingly resilient.

Curlew was built as an ocean cruising boat for New York Yacht Club member Charles Lee Andrews and was sailed and successfully raced for many years by his son, Snowden Andrews. In 1937, new owners asked Alden to re-design Curlew into a staysail schooner. In 1940, she was donated to the US Coast Guard for $1.00. During the war, she served as a coastal submarine patrol boat and, a er the war, as a training vessel in New London, Connecticut, and Cape May, New Jersey, teaching new Coast Guard recruits sailing and basic seamanship.

She was decommissioned in 1960 and, in a sealed bid sale, purchased for $3,000. at was the beginning of Curlew’s worldwide period of peril: damage closely followed by repair and

renovation. Her owners in 1960 purchased her with no bowsprit or foremast, which had been lost when she had broken loose in a hurricane. Restoring her and planning to charter her out in the Caribbean, she had to be abandoned by her crew and was nearly sunk in a storm near Bermuda. Again made seaworthy, she traveled to Samoa and New Zealand and ran aground in so coral near Tobago. During a lightening storm her main was struck and crumbled, which required more work.

Eventually Curlew made her way to the West Coast, was chartered in Hawaii for a few years, was extensively restored on Bainbridge Island and nally made her way to Long Beach then to Dana

Point. Today, Curlew has been totally re tted and restored. She has her earlier beautiful lines combined with today’s latest equipment. She charters out of Dana Point Harbor and sails the coastline of Southern California.

Electra is an elegant 100’ fantail yacht that moves beautifully through the water. She was built in 1930 at the Lake Union Drydock Company in Seattle commissioned by A. W. Leonard, President of Puget Sound Power and Light Company, for his wife. Electra, named for the Greek goddess of light, was a gi to her on Valentine’s Day.

But Electra is not only beautiful with burnished mahogany, polished brightwork and stained glass. She is able and seaworthy too. She was designed and constructed for rugged cruising in the heavy seas of the Northwest. She has a 3” hull of diagonal double-planked Alaskan cedar over 4” cedar oak frames. A renovation exposed some of her construction showing her stained and varnished hull timbers. For her rst 30 years, Electra was well-maintained and sheltered in a boathouse on Lake Union, interrupted only by anti-submarine duty during the war.

A new owner brought her to Newport Beach where she was recon gured and used as a party boat for

several years. Eventually Electra was purchased by Fred and Mary Ru ner and brought through the Panama Canal to Fort Lauderdale where she was restored back to her original design and purpose and extensively used for

entertaining. When Ronald Reagan was president, Electra

was his “o cial yacht” in California. She was a setting for scenes in the movie Nixon and in one

showing the life of Elizabeth Taylor. Her current owner brought her back to Newport Beach where

she now hosts weddings, parties and elegant dinners. One owner described Electra as a “people boat” because she seems to look better with people on board. She certainly gets her chance now. Electra is a regular feature of Newport Harbor steaming around the bay and lled with people celebrating happy occasions.

Cruise on Curlew, the 82’ schooner, this weekend. She will sail in three two-hour cruises on Saturday at noon, 2:30pm and 5:00pm. The cost is $80 per person age 18 and over and $50 for children over 5 years old.

On Sunday, ticketed passengers can watch the Wooden Boat Festival Parade and sail in the Heritage Sail-By from the deck of Curlew while enjoying a Champagne Brunch harbor cruise. The cost is $80 per person 18 and over and $50 for children over 5.

The classic 100’ fantail yacht Electra, circa 1930, is also hosting a Champagne Brunch Harbor Cruise on Sunday providing waterfront viewing of the Parade and Sail-By. Tickets are $80 per person 18 and over and $50 for children.

Acorn is a replica of a Whitehall, boats which were used in the mid to late 19th century for a variety of purposes from shing, though not designed for shing, to ferrying agent and chandlers to the square-riggers arriving in port. ese Whitehalls were prevalent until motorized vessels became more common in the 1930s. Typically larger than this, Whitehalls ranged from 16 feet up to 25 feet, with larger versions accommodating four rowing stations and a wider beam for more stability. is replica has been “slimmed down” for better rowing characteristics.

I built this dinghy in 2011 with tremendous assistance from Rick Brown, shipwright. We got the plans from Ian Oughtred who has taken the plans of many old vessels of this type and recon gured them for easier building methods. Acorn was built in a more traditional manner using hardwood and “plank and frame” construction. e primary woods are Port Orford cedar for the blond planking and Honduran mahogany for the red shear plank, stem, thwarts, dagger board trunk, and transom. e frame is white oak and the oor planking is teak.

Bimini Babe, built in 1954, was the thirteenth sport shing boat, hull #13, built by Rybovich. Robert E. Maytag, celebrated tournament sherman and noted ecologist, commissioned her. She is one of the three earliest examples of Rybovich cra smanship still operating as intended.

Bimini Babe was the sixth in a series of 36-footers. She, along with her sisters, Hull #16, Four Bells, and Hull #18, Timid Tuna, is considered a further re nement of an extremely successful design. She underwent a total re t in 2004-2005 and recently went in for updated electronics and paint.

Bella, a 26’ Lyman Sleeper, was built in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1964 by the Lyman Boat Manufacturing Company. More recently, she was listed on e-Bay in sad shape and located up in Lake Michigan. She was purchased and, a er a trip across country to Newport Beach in 2010, Bella spent the next year in the boat yard getting completely reworked top to bottom.

She has a new electrical system, an engine and drive rebuild, and a complete interior restoration. Electronics were added, over 1200 pieces were chromed, and much more was done.

is classic cruiser can be seen around Newport Harbor on a regular basis.

e Bolger Light Schooner was built in 1980 from a kit. She is 21’ long with a beam of 5’.

Comocean, a Chris Cra El Capitan manufactured in 1953, was featured in the company’s marketing brochures that year in its original colors: black hull with aquamarine cabin. She also toured boat shows that season in the Midwest and East. Her rst owner brought her to the Sacramento Delta and she spent many years there. Later owners brought her to Huntington Beach where she still resides. In the mid 1990s, Comocean had a complete re t including a reconstruction of the hull, new mechanical systems and repower, and all new nish materials. She now has new colors that are also traditional and correct to the 1950s: white hull and tan cabin.

Colnett is a 42-foot cruiser built in 1924 by Sea Cra Shipyard in Wilmington, California. She was originally built for Henry Vaughn. She was constructed to Edson R. Schock Design #307. e hull is carved planked cedar on bent oak frames. Her cabins are built of Select Teak with tongue and groove decks, canvas or berglass covered. e original power was an Eastern Standard Gasoline engine. Currently, she is powered by a Caterpillar Model D3240 four-cylinder diesel engine. Changes from the original drawings include a modi ed window layout, an a mast stepped to the top of the upper deck and tted with a crows’ nest viewing platform. In 1938, she was sold to Captain Frank Bivens, with the express intent of catching broadbill sword sh on Tuna Club regulation tackle. A er World War II, Bivens decided to travel and sold the boat to shing companion Ken Neptune, who made many improvements to Colnett over the years. Sometime a er the war, the ybridge was added, and in 1961 the original engine was replaced with her current Powerplant. In 1997, the underbody was completely reconstructed with new planking, frames and fasteners by Long Beach shipwright Dennis Budd. Steve Farwell and Bunker Hill purchased Colnett in 2007, intending to continue her legacy of sport shing and local cruising. She won the Mayor’s Choice for Best Powerboat and People’s Choice for Cruiser Under 45 feet at the 2014 BYC Wooden Boat Festival.

Not many boats have hosted a First Lady as well as a Playmate of the Month. Conquest, a one-of-a-kind tri-cabin cruiser, has done both. Stephens Brothers Shipbuilders built Hull #572 in 1929 for industrialist Donald Rheem of Orinda, California. She still has her original etched Art Nouveau mirrors, polished Burmese teak, and solid brass hardware. rough the 1930s, she cruised in the San Francisco Bay and Orcas Island in Washington. During World War II, she was commandeered by the US Navy and served as a VIP vessel. It was during that time that she hosted Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1989 Conquest was used as a setting for a Playboy centerfold featuring Erika Eleniak of Baywatch.

Today, on the exterior, she is beautifully maintained to her original lines yet her interior has all the conveniences of today. A 1955 Chrysler hemi gas engine powers her at 14 knots.

Designed and built by Lyman Boat Works in 1969, Dazzler is an all wood lapstrake “Open Sportsman” model, ideal for bay cruising Newport Harbor and weekends in Catalina Island. Dazzler has a colorful history of previous owners and their adventures. In the 1970s she was o en seen shing for marlin at the Avalon Bank equipped with a tuna tower, outriggers and a cockpit ghting chair. In the 1980s and 1990s she logged many miles cruising between happy hour at Woodies Wharf and last call at Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s “Pirates Den.” In 2008 a complete keel-up restoration was completed and Dazzler is ready for many more years of fun with family and friends. Cheers!

Cracker is a 31’ Rybovich sport sher built by Rybovich and Sons Boatworks as hull #24 in 1956. She was built for Bev Smith, a South Florida Ford Dealer, and originally named Tranquil. Bev was a true Rybovich enthusiast as he owned three Rybovichs. Tranquil was the only 31’ Rybovich ever built. Cracker is an active shing and cruising vessel and is currently enjoyed as was originally intended by her builders.

Under Way! The classic sport fi sher designed by Rybovich and the renowned William Fife-designed schooner Astor making their way out of Newport Harbor. This is an original watercolor and India ink painting, approximately 17 x 18 inches, done in 2017.

I am honored to be asked to contribute to this year’s Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival cover art!

Joy and appreciation of these fi nely crafted living sculptures is transmitted naturally into my portrayals whether in watercolor, India ink or in oil paintings. Caring and owning and building wooden vessels myself for more than forty years has no doubt infl uenced many of my subjects in art. I am happy to see this grand celebration of craftsmanship represented so well now for four consecutive years, thanks to Ralph Rodheim and the Balboa Yacht Club.

Dorade, a 52’ yawl launched in 1930, has won more ocean races than any other boat in history. Designed by Olin Stephens and commissioned as a family yacht by Roderick Stephens Sr., his father, Dorade was Design 7 by Sparkman & Stephens. An unusual design for her time, she had a tall rig with a narrow beam, sharp ends, and a lead ballast deep in her keel. Immediately, she was successful as a racer. In 1931, she won the Transatlantic Race from Newport, Rhode Island, to Plymouth, England, by a margin of two days. at same year she won the Fastnet Race and continued with multiple victories. New owners brought her to the West Coast in 1935 where continued to race and win. Dorade came in rst in the Transpaci c Yacht Race in 1936. She later sailed for years in Mediterranean classic regattas a er she was extensively restored in Italy. She was brought back to the States in 2010 by new owners and continues to race and win. Dorade just nished second in class in this year’s Newport to Ensenada Race and has a full racing season planned which includes the Sydney Hobart Race later this year. Dorade is also known for the Dorade Box an innovative deck-mounted ventilator designed by Rod Stephens Jr.

Galatea was built in 1964 by shipwright Paul Lindwell in Santa Barbara for Bill Hanna, the cartoonist who created Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear and others. Naval architect Art DeFever drew the lines of a West Coast shing seiner and maximized accommodation provided by the generous hull form. She and her dozen sister ships, built between 1959 and 1967, represented the start of purpose-built, heavy displacement trawler yachts. Constructed of r-on-oak, she is Monel-fastened. Galatea measures 53.5’ by 16.5’, draws 7’, and displaces 105,000 lbs. Power is a single Caterpillar D-333, dry stack, turning a 46” wheel. Cruising speed is 8.7 knots at 1450 rpm. Fuel consumption is 5.5 gallons/hour. With a reduction gear of 4:5 to 1, the prop turns at 322 rpm at cruising speed. She holds just under 2,000 gallons of diesel and 1,000 gallons of water. Since 2001, she has cruised approximately 35,000 miles including voyages to Alaska, Canada and Mexico. Mostly though, she is used for exploring between Newport and San Francisco, with lots of time in the Delta, at Catalina, and around the Channel Islands.

2017 NEWPORT BEACH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL22

The Evolution of Sportfi shersFor the rst time, the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival

is showcasing the evolution of sport shing boat design. It’s come a long way, as you can see from the eld on display.

At the turn of the century, sport shing was done from rowboats launched from trawlers. With the advent of propulsion systems for cruisers from the 1910-20s time frame, single-screw, cruiser type boats were set up to catch the big ones. ese were more yacht than sport sher as we know the class today. Colnett is an example of that time period.

Trolling the waters between Key Largo and Bimini, author Ernest Hemingway and other celebrities helped to introduce the well-heeled of the Roaring Twenties to the challenges of catching marlin and sail sh. In 1934, he asked the Wheeler Shipyards of Brooklyn, New York, to build him a modi ed Playmate cabin cruiser with extras: additional tankage so he could sh farther and longer, a transom lowered 12 inches for landing sh, a live sh well and an auxiliary inboard motor. She also had a wooden roller spanning her transom to ease sh into the cockpit. Today, you’ll nd sport shers with a transom gate instead.

anks to Papa Hemingway and his 38-foot shing boat Pilar, millions of Americans think nothing of spending a day, weeks, or a life of weekends on the water. He was a founding father of the multibillion-dollar sport shing industry today,

along with legends such as Charles Holder, Michael Lerner, Tommy Gi ord, the writer Zane Grey and General George Patton.

An early adopter of outriggers, Hemingway added a ying bridge with controls to his boat a few years a er he bought her. John Rybovich and Sons rose to fame a er Hemingway brought his Wheeler to the Rybovich boatyard for sport shing modi cations. e 1930s were a time of experimentation. Everyone was trying to improve the boats, the tackle and the shing techniques, laying the foundation for sport shing today.

Miss Chevy II, a 34-foot cra , was commissioned by car dealer Charlie Johnson in 1947. e boat included the rst ghting chair and rst set of aluminum outriggers. e three Rybovich sons introduced models equipped with transom doors and tuna towers. eir boats were edge-glued and glassed from bow to stern, which give them longevity.

In 1952, Miss Chevy IV introduced the company’s broken sheer design, providing a more sleek pro le than the previous seven, trunk-cabin cra . From the ghting chair and the transom door, all of

the Rybovich’s on display, Bimini Babe (1954, #13), Four Bells (1955 #16), Drambuie (1956 #23) and Cracker (1956 #24) represent the dawn of a new era.

e growing popularity of sport shers led to amenities and technologies for family and friends on long-range trips. e Elliott Dolly is an example of the larger, more luxurious

accommodations. e Huckins Huck Fin represents another boat company well known in the 1960s. Other popular builders known to build wooden sport shers in the ‘60’s include Chris Cra , Viking, Egg Harbor, Marlineer, Dittmar Donaldon, Drake and Post.

Bertram came on the scene in the 1960s with their berglass sport sher. Fiberglass quickly replaced wood as the desired building material and ultimately replaced wooden boats for decades. In the mid-80s, new construction techniques with epoxy and cold molding, using wood once again, came

into fashion. Boat builders using these techniques began producing lighter weight boats that were stronger, faster and more e cient than their berglass counterparts. Ironically, in 1964, Rybovich started using this process, Merritt and other manufacturers adopted the modern process and 50 years later the majority of the ultimate sport sher builders of today are building boats out of wood again.

In this full circle from wood to berglass to wood again, the elite builders are recognized for their consistent quality, level of shing functions, range of customized options. ey have greater exibility on the design of the layout along with improved power options that have produced yachts with mind-boggling performance. Add the cra smanship and state of the art building processes that includes the utmost attention to detail, these boats deliver an incredible level of owner and crew satisfaction. In addition to Rybovich and Merritt, mentioned above, there are many other builders delivering magni cent boats that are wood at heart. Some of these builders include Garlington, Spencer, Bayliss, American, Monterey, Jim Smith, Tribute, F & S, G & S, and others.

e common thread is these boats are designed and built for comfort, style, speed, e ciency, and safety all to provide the good life in pursuit of your dreams.

Requisitioned in 1941 by the U.S. Navy as a patrol boat protecting Kaiser Steel Works on the Columbia River, Phantom was painted gray from bow to stern and out tted with a 30-caliber Browning machine gun on its foredeck. Stolen and run aground on the Colombia Bar in the late 1980s, then abandoned, Phantom was rescued by well-known Portland Yacht Club member and wooden boat enthusiast Chuck Kellogg, who spen t three years on her restoration.

Purchased in March 2017 by Rick Ingold and Dean Kiser, Phantom now ies the Balboa Yacht Club burgee and calls Newport Beach her home.
