Researchers at Texas A&M University recently found that adults who want their children to eat more greens should remove any other delicious “competition” from their child’s plate. By serving a veggie first and alone, when a child is at their hungriest, they’re more likely to eat the healthy option put before them.

Good parents and grandparents want what’s best for the children they love - from the inside out. This includes physical and emotional health, as well as providing a generational legacy of faith.

Another way you can give your best is by creating an Estate Plan that will bless your loved ones and the ministries you care about like City Rescue Mission. It can also help to:

Mitigate unnecessary taxation. Certain assets carry higher tax implications than others. Consider leaving lesser taxed items like life insurance for your heirs and retirement assets to a non-profit organization.

Eliminate potential stress and create peace. An up-to-date Will allows you to put your financial house in order. This can help your loved ones avoid unnecessary emotional or relationship strain.

There are two things to look at with any giving:the impact you have and the benefit to you.

At CRM, you can be assured that your giving goes to life transformation. You are also assured that your generous contributions are well-managed. Para-church agencies, such as CRM, are meant to shine light in dark places. City Rescue Mission chooses to be a member of Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability (ECFA), and we have been since 1980. ECFA’s strict financial guidelines are there to ensure you that your gifts are handled correctly because we want to demonstrate integrity, credibility, and accountability. This allows us, as a responsible organization, to differentiate ourselves in our witness to the world. Did you know that there are a few tricks in giving? You may be able to avoid capital gains tax on investments by giving stocks or other assets that have grown in value. That one may be particularly valuable this time of year, because many investors are sitting on big gains from recent years.

“The more appreciation the stock or other asset has, the greater the potential tax benefit may be.”

Bud Toole began his involvement with City Rescue Mission in 1989 after hearing about us at a meeting at the Rotary Club. His first experience was as a volunteer serving a Thanksgiving meal. His love for the Mission quickly grew as he got to know more about the Christian nature of what happens here. He

was asked to join the Board of Directors and has served in that capacity since. He has been the board chair on several occasions and has also recruited others for the board as well. Bud was also involved in the purchase of our campus on McDuff Avenue on Jacksonville’s west side.

By the time Bud began donating his time to City Rescue Mission, he had recently sold his business, his children were grown and living independently, so he knew that he had some time on his hands. At the same time, he had also started two other small businesses, and was an integral part of starting his church, Christian Family Chapel. So, he offered to become a mentor.

Ronn Scott came to City Rescue Mission due to his struggle with drugs. He was raised in a good two-parent family and had attended church growing up, but had fallen away, especially after his father passed away. This led him to being involved with the wrong crowd. When Ronn became eligible for the mentor phase of the LifeBuilders program he was introduced to Bud. “Ronn was serious about his recovery,” Bud recalled. Ronn got a job quickly as a cook at UNF.

Ronn said that he received strength from Bud. “Every young man needs an Elijah to impart wisdom into his life. Bud helped fill the void that was left in my life after my father had passed. Every young person needs that older person,” said Ronn.

Bud felt that he got a lot out of the relationship too, because he was fulfilling God’s purpose for that stage of his life.

Both Bud and Ronn made

it very clear that it’s all about family. We are all related through the blood of Jesus. We all need to show that brotherly love to each other. Family is a big component to who we are, especially during the Christmas season. We need to look at all things that are important in life. There is no better way to impart that love on someone else.

Ronn says that it is his relationship with Jesus Christ that was the most important to his recovery, and remains the most important to his life today. “I owe so much to Christ,

and to the City Rescue Mission.” He is now compelled to help others. Just as Bud impacted Ronn’s life, Ronn is now impacting the lives of so many CRM students in the LifeBuilders Program. Many of these students serve along with Ronn in the kitchen at our McDuff location.

Bud and Ronn are just two worthy examples among many who demonstrate how this

ministry operates and will continue to do so pressing forward...others helping others. All of us in the family of Christ.

This story about Bud and Ronn is just one example of the mentoring relationships that occur here on a daily basis. There is a wonderful book which describes a mentor/mentee relationship titled, “Same Kind of Different as Me,” written by Ron Hall. This book has now become a movie to be released on February 2, 2017. We are blessed to have the author come to Jacksonville for a banquet on February 16. We invite you to read the book, see the movie, and meet the man by reserving a table for yourselves and eight of your closest friends to share in this story of Christ’s redemption and love which is shown through personal relationships.

City Rescue Mission has been recognized in the TOP CHARITIES in the Jacksonville Business Journal October 2016!We are so blessed and thankful for a community who helps us make an impact!

Serving Hundreds Downtown for Thanksgiving

On Wednesday, November 23rd, City Rescue Mission helped feed nearly 1,000 of our neighbors in need who live among us. Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry and his family helped serve food and also mingled among the guests for over an hour. He was joined by a wonderful group of roughly 70 volunteers including players and cheerleaders from the Jacksonville Sharks, Jacksonville Armada and Jumbo Shrimp sport teams, University Christian School baseball team, employees of JP Morgan Chase,

and many of our wonderful supporters in the community like yourself. As our guests were finished being served, we had a truck filled

with new pairs of socks that were handed out to all of those who came through our doors. When the day was complete, we had given away nearly 6,000 pairs of soft white socks! Those will make a big difference during these cold months. Thank you to everyone who made it such a special day in the hearts and minds of so many!

We’ll do it all again for our Christmas Banquet on December 22nd.
