Do good. Feel great. If you have something good to say: Have something good to say. Say it well. Say it often. Or use the other set of rules. Tell ‘em what you are going to say. Tell ‘em. Tell ‘em what you just told them. Today, I want to tell you how important membership is. I was going to tell you it is my birthday, but I am sure membership is impor- tant to more people in this district than the fact that the governor just got another candle on the cake. Besides, membership is important 365 days of the year. Without new people and new ideas, clubs do not grow. New members are important. In fact, when the club meeting becomes just another weekly meal, you are on the way down. Attendance drops and enthusiasm wanes. Projects and a good speaker program mark strong clubs. People don’t want to miss the weekly meeting because of the speaker and, often, because there is discussion about the upcoming club project during or right after the meeting. In order to be an effective member, you need to know what is happening in your club. And, you need to be involved, have a job in your club. Folks, this is a way to make retention a part of your weekly meetings. Fellowship fits right in there too. Sitting next to people you hardly know during the meeting gives you a chance to “get to know them”. I like to think of Rotary as a “friend factory”. Every meeting you go to means you meet more people who are potential friends. And, these friends think just like you. They want to make a positive impact on the world. Today, I would like you to ask one “quality” person to join Rotary. You could ask your accountant, attorney, or realtor. It doesn’t matter. Maybe you asked him/her before, but today may be the day you get a YES. Or, perhaps, this person has never been asked. Be the one to ask. It is a HUGE compliment to be asked to be a Rotarian. We are looking for quality people to join Rotary. It isn’t the custom in the US to ask for birthday presents. But if you want to give me one, ask someone to join Rotary. That would be a great present.. We have 1.2 million Rotarians. If you ask someone to join Rotary, we will have 1.2 million plus one to do good in the world, support Foundation, be the member at lunch to talk to, and so much more. Membership is important. OUR FOUNDATION DOES GOOD IN THE WORLD

COME JOIN THE FUN.

Through the Foundation, Rotary’s reach growsIn Rotary, we are guided by the three simple words of our motto Service Above Self. That motto forms an important part of our identity as Rotarians. It reminds us why we are here, why our everyaction matters, and why we take the time and the initiative to help others wherever and however we can. Our Rotary Foundation has its own motto: Doing Good in the World. Doing Good in the World is more than a slogan. It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder. It expresses in the clearest termswhy we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have. Our Foundation exists to support the good that we can do throughRotary. It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective. Because of our Foundation we can, very simply, do more of our Rotary work.In May, I marked a personal milestone: 50 years as a Rotarian. In that time, I have seen so much achieved through Rotary, and seen very clearly how much of Rotary’s ability to do good is drawnfrom our Foundation. Through our Foundation, every one of us has an opportunity to be a part of all the good that Rotary does. This month marks the end of my service as trustee chair of ourRotary Foundation. I am grateful for the opportunity to know so many of you, and I thank you all for your support and encouragement. Please join me in welcoming our incoming trustee chair,Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, and in wishing him great success. Glenn E. Estess Sr. Foundation Trustee Chair

Trustees significantly restore Matching Grants World Fund budgetRotary International News -- 18 May 2010 At their April meeting, The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved a Matching Grants World Fund budget of US$21.5 million for 2010-11. This amount represents an 82 percent increase over theprevious year’s budget of $11.8 million and, because funds for the 100 Future Vision pilot districts were budgeted separately, one of the largest World Fund budgets in Matching Grants history. TheTrustees approved a Rotary Foundation Global Grants World Fund budget of $8 million for Future Vision pilot districts starting with the 2010-11 program year. Although the 2010-11 Foundationprograms budget is pending final approval by the RI Board of Directors in June, we want to reassure Rotarians that we do not anticipate the Matching Grant budget being fully committed early inthe Rotary year. The Trustees plan to review Competitive Matching Grant applications at their October 2010 and April 2011 meetings; the Foundation will notify districts if this business cycle changes. The Trustees were able to restore World Fund budget for Matching Grants largely because Rotarians and other friends of Rotary donated a record amount of almost $115 million to the AnnualPrograms Fund in 2007-08 (World Fund allocations are based on Annual Programs Fund donations three years prior). Additionally, because investment income stabilized, the Trustees did not needto use a significant amount of World Fund to supplement the Foundation’s programs operations budget for the coming year. If you have questions about Matching Grants and the 2010-11 program year budget, please e-mail them to [email protected].

Historic Moments: The Grace Irene Mann lettersA letter and envelope from Grace Irene Mann to Paul P. Harris, 24 April 1906. Rotary founder Paul P. Harris had a little-known romance before he met his future wife, Jean . Grace Irene Mann was from a prominent family in Florida, USA. Harris met her in 1905 on a visit to seehis friend and former employer George C. Clark in Jacksonville. Harris and Mann exchanged letters in which they shared affection, gossiped, and discussed theirfamilies, theology, and philosophy. He told her about searching for a meeting place for the Rotary Club of Chicago and offered details of the club's constitution. Mann replied to his tales of Rotary with enthusiasm: I take great interest in the Constitution and By laws of your Rotary Club because you have written them. …I think you have covered everything in a concise and compact form. … The By-laws are especially good. According to the letters, the idea of marriage wasbroached in the fall of 1906, though Mann's family ultimately discouraged her from settling down with Harris. Their correspondence ended in May 1907. In hisfinal letter to Mann, Harris wrote: I certainly am interested in your future and I desire you to make a great girl of yourself and I am sure you will. … You willbe happy. Give my best to your Dalton friends. Yours very truly, Paul P. Harris Harris returned the letters he received from her, as was the custom. When Mann married John Murrell Bell in June 1910, she stored the correspondence in theattic of her sister May Mann Jennings. The letters remained there until the home was demolished in 1963, at which time they were given to Mann's eldest daugh-ter, Elizabeth. In 1997, Mann's daughter Grace Bell Rogers donated the letters to Rotary International.
