new teacher session
DESCRIPTION
Information for new teachers in Columbia Public SchoolsTRANSCRIPT
Goals for our session
• Have an understanding of the instructional materials.– enVision Math– Investigations– Cathy Fosnot- Contexts for Learning
• Become familiar with mathematics curriculum on angel.o CPS online resources
• Become familiar with SuccessNet
Curriculum vs. Instructional Materials
• enVisionMATH is NOT our curriculum…
• enVisionMATH is the program selected to support our curriculum
• Other resources to support our curriculum:– Cathy Fosnot’s “Contexts For Learning”– “Investigations-Data, Number, Space”
The Teacher’s Role
• To observe and listen carefully to students.
• To try to understand how students are thinking.
• To help students articulate their thinking, both orally and in writing.
• To establish a classroom atmosphere in which high value is placed on thinking hard about problems.
The Teacher’s Role
• To insist that students keep track of their work and be able to explain or show their thinking.
• To ask questions that push students’ mathematical thinking further.
• To facilitate class discussions about important mathematical ideas.
The Teacher’s Role• To make decisions about how to modify the
curriculum appropriately for individuals or groups of students.– Changing the numbers in a problem to make the
problem more accessible or challenging for a particular student.
– Repeating activities with students who need more experience.
– Rearranging pairs or small groups so students learn more from a variety of their peers.
Creating the Mathematical Community
• Setting Up Your room – what to think about– Space for recording and displaying math
work (talk, vocabulary, strategies, etc.)– Math Congress – Materials availability– PBS universals for transitions, listening to
each other, sharing materials
Questions to Ponder When Lesson Planning
• How will you manage materials? – daily spiral review, problem of the day, quick-checks,
homework, differentiated instruction, centers, textbooks, assessments
• What are the essential components of the lesson? – What’s the math? Will you assign all problems? What might
you leave out?• What about Schema?
– Where do you think students will need more explanation? How will you connect to the student’s prior knowledge? How will you build background knowledge? What questions will you need to ask that may or may not be provided in the materials?
• When will students talk about math? • What struggles do you anticipate?
Expectations
• Pacing guide…• Mathematics is/should be taught daily
– 70 min (K-2) • Routines outside of the 60 min. lesson
– 80 min (3-5) • 10 minute math outside the 70 min. lesson
• New Teacher Follow up Sessions– Scheduled throughout school year – expected
attendance
Components of CPS Elementary Mathematics Program
• TEs – 6 to 11 units per grade level– Each unit contains complete lessons in a developmental sequence
• Trimester Tests– 1 per trimester, covers multiple topics – Every student will take this test and scores will be uploaded to mastery
manager
• Manipulatives – see list– If opening a new classroom, you will get your manipulatives before school
begins– If not opening a new classroom, inventory the materials in your classroom
and let Paula (25721) know if there is anything missing. We will do our best to get materials to you before school begins.
