14Dear Partner,

It doesn’t take me to tell you that in today’s poultry industry margins are tight. There is a fine line between profit and loss, and stay-ing on the right side of this line is becoming increasingly challenging.

We are all aware of the potential of modern single-stage incubation and the great devel-opments made in this discipline. The relatively recent Embryo-Response Incubation™ tech-nology offers a level of control and real-time data feedback hatchery managers could only have dreamt of one decade ago.

However, this new approach brings along many new challenges that cannot be under-estimated. Therefore, following the success of the Technical Audit and the Hatchery Guidance Programme, we have expanded our range of service packs to include the Hatchery Perfor-mance Audit. In this edition you will read all about how, through assessing and advising upon all elements within the hatchery, the Hatchery Performance Audit’s primary objec-tive is to assist the hatchery to achieve and maintain an optimum level of performance.

One of the key elements in managing your hatchery is to regularly calibrate your incuba-tors, or rather “check the calibration”. There-fore we included a set of guidelines on why and how to check your calibration correctly.

Meanwhile, Petersime keeps reinforcing its leadership position in the incubator market. We are proud to announce that over 5000 S-line in-cubators are already running all over the world. In this edition, we highlight four key customers: Agrofert in the Czech Republic, Nippon Chunky in Japan, Akashevskaya in Russia and LDP Farms Food Corporation in the Philippines.

Enjoy!

The hatchery expert goes through the hatchery to analyse every aspect of it.>

Managing a hatchery is not always plain sailing. A hatchery operation involves many complex processes, from egg reception to chick departure, and its success stands or falls with close super vision and expertise from the hatchery management. The small-est crack in one of the stages of the hatchery operation can considerably jeopardize its results.

To help you to get the most out of your hatchery, Petersime has developed the Hatchery Performance Audit service pack. A Petersime hatchery expert visits your hatchery to screen every aspect of it, providing advice and recommendations for better performance. He/she will review your incubator history files, perform hatch breakout sessions and provide guidance for future incubation performance analyses.

The Hatchery Performance Audit service pack is particularly recommended immediately after a Petersime Technical Audit, or within 6 to 12 months after Hatchery Guidance ProgrammePLUS.

The hatchery expert presents his findings and any supporting data to the hatchery manager and staff.

Based on detailed breakout analyses, the hatchery expert will optimize the incubation programmes for better hatch results.

The Hatchery Performance Audit includes:1. HATCHERY ASSESSMENT

• The hatchery expert goes through your hatchery to screen and record every stage of the process, from egg arrival to chick departure. He checks the quality of the received eggs and verifies if the room conditions are optimal in every area of the hatchery.

• In addition, he analyses flock performance data to identify factors outside the hatchery that may influence overall performance.

2. INCUBATOR PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

• The hatchery expert fully reviews the incubators’ history files and programs. • He then inspects your chick quality and analyses your unhatched eggs and hatch debris. • Based on this information, he formulates advice on any adjustments needed to improve your hatch results.

3. FEEDBACK AND ADVICE

• In a summarizing meeting, the hatchery expert presents his findings and any supporting data to you and your personnel.

4. ADVANCED INCUBATION TRAINING

• The hatchery expert provides guidance on correct incubator programming. • Moreover, he provides instructions on correct chick quality assessments and hatch breakout analyses. • When using a Petersime breakout analysis form handed by the hatchery expert, you can from then on rely

on remote support from Petersime’s Customer Service Centre.

LDP Farms Food Corporation (Philippines) signs hatchery expansion deal with PetersimeLDP Farms Food Corporation, supplier of day-old chicks to Philippine poultry integrator San Miguel, has signed an agreement with Peter-sime to expand their hatchery in San Fabian with an extra setting capacity of 576,000 eggs per week.

The agreement includes the purchase of Bio-Streamer™ 12S setters and BioStreamer™ 8H and 4H hatchers, as well as an expansion of the cur-rent HVAC system and of the IrisLink™ software.

LDP Farms Food Corporation is owned by the Lolim family and is engaged in a tolling partnership with the San Miguel Group - the

number one poultry player in the Philippines. The LDP hatchery in San Fabian was built last year and had its first egg setting in September. Total capacity then amounted to 460,800 eggs per week. Both LDP and San Miguel reported to be very happy with the hatch results and with the training and support provided by Petersime during, before, and after installation (Hatchery Guidance ProgrammePLUS). Hence it was decided sooner than expected to more than double the hatchery capacity.

Construction works started at the beginning of April and installation of the Petersime equipment is planned in the summer of 2013.

Checking your calibration: why and how?By Roger Banwell, Hatchery Development Manager

Over the years, accuracy and repeatability of temperature and humidity sensors have improved significantly. Does this mean we can 100% rely on them to never fail? Of course not. Even if we build in system redundancy protec-tion and independent alarms, performing a simple manual check at the beginning of every incubation cycle will always be critical. We call this manual check “calibration”.

“Checking your calibration”

We often mistakenly say that we are “calibrating” the incubator. However, more accurate would be to say “check-ing our calibration”, as the sensors do not normally require any adjustment. Good, regular maintenance however, is key, and ensuring all is well at the be-ginning of every cycle should be para-mount in any maintenance schedule.

So before every incubation cycle, the calibration of the machine should be checked, and if necessary, small adjust-ments should be made to the tem-perature and humidity sensor readings. For this purpose, a high accuracy calibration unit is used.

The position of the calibration unit

When the R&D department designs an incubator, the temperature profile within the cabinet is extensively data logged and a 3D image is built up of exactly what happens throughout the cycle. The calibration point is chosen so that it corresponds to the average temperature of the machine, and so that it can be conveniently reached from the front of the machine.

Petersime calibration unit, plugged in in a BioStreamer™ setter

>

Page 11: New service pack: Hatchery Performance Audit€¦ · hatch breakout sessions and provide guidance for future incubation performance analyses. The Hatchery Performance Audit service

By Roger Banwell, Hatchery Development Manager

The temperature at this position corresponds to point “X” as shown in the graph below.

In reality, things are a little more complicated.

• Firstly, the calibration point is actu-ally chosen at a position where the temperature is slightly higher than “X”. The reason for this is biological: damage to the developing em-bryo will much sooner occur if the temperature is too high than if it is too low.

• Secondly, with an Embryo-Response Incubation™ system, the OvoScan™ temperature sensor is aligned be-tween d1h12 and d2h12 (as shown in the graph), when the egg shell temperature and the air temperature of the machine are equal. This align-ment depends on the accuracy of the temperature sensor. Therefore it is critical to check your calibration at this stage.

It is highly important to calibrate at the designated calibration point. If a different point is used, the standard Petersime incubation programs are no longer valid. Added to this, remote support from the Petersime Service Department becomes difficult if not impossible, as our knowledge and experience are based on our known references.

Calibration equipment

It goes without saying that accurate calibration checks stand or fall with the quality of the calibration unit used. Key points to look out for are:

• Consistency. Many units on the market are not consistent over a longer period of time.

• Precision. Many units are accurate to +/- 0.1 °F, but only if the reading is around room temperature.

• Accuracy. Many units are calibrated at given ambient conditions (usually 25ºC), and drift can be significant when ambient conditions are higher or lower.

To be on the safe side, it is best to work with the calibration units offered by Petersime.

Do’s and don’ts

> Use the recommended system/pro-cedures. They are tried and tested and ensure continuity for on-going support.

> Include a calibration check in your standard practice schedule. It takes minimal time and one failure can be very costly.

> Always ensure that the reading is stable on the calibration unit and inside the incubator, and that there has been no recent heating, cool-ing, ventilation, or turning activity. Never rush your procedure, it’s perfectly acceptable to load your calibration unit and return some 15-20 minutes later.

> Ensure your equipment is sound and include a regular re-calibration test of your unit.

> If your check shows a big error, be careful. Double check and also test your calibration unit in other machines before assuming it’s the incubator that’s wrong. There may also be other factors such as a cool-ing solenoid stuck open, leaking door seals etc., all of which can give you a false reading.

> Turning will affect the airflow and possibly the reading. Therefore, always calibrate with the turning in the same position, preferably the “A” position (see below) as it’s a known reference used by Petersime’s Ser-vice Department.

It is advisable to calibrate when the setter trolleys are turned in the “A” position.>
