Program Details Program purpose is to provide college access and science exploration programming in GVSU authorized schools. Program will be conducted during the academic calendar year between the months of September and May. (Specific start and end times to be determine by partnering school.) Program will consist of one meeting per month. (Length of each program meeting is determined by partnering schools, minimal one hour each meeting.) Programs are offered during the school day. Schools with established after-school programs can elect to have program offered after-school. COLLEGE AWARENESSStudents who are exposed to college from an early stageare more likely to view college as a viable option. Earlycollege awareness is a key step to raising aspirations. Ithelps young students see possibilities in their future and,most important, it helps them understand how to accessthose opportunities.

The GVSU Charter Schools Office provides 8th-gradestudents with College Awareness programming wherestudents can learn the tools needed to make collegehappen. During the program, students have theopportunity to explore different college readinessresources.

Program activities include:• College Exposure/Awareness - Learning about the

different college choices and taking virtual tours.

• Understanding College Language - Learning aboutcollege terms and what they mean.

• Financial Literacy/Financial Education - Learningabout scholarships, grants, and Financial aid programs.

• Success Highway program - Tips, tools, and resourcesfor being a successful student while preparing for highschool.

CAREER EXPLORATIONResearch has identified middle school as a timewhen students can benefit the most from careerexploration, build self-awareness, learn aboutpotential careers, and develop a plan for reachingfuture goals.

The GVSU Charter Schools Office provides 8th-grade students with STEAM Career Explorationprogramming where students can exploreengineering and health careers through fun, hands-on activities!

Program activities include:• Career Carousel - learning different engineer/

health careers

• Real world STEAM tasks and problem-solving tobuild table top hovercrafts, design towers, helmetsand other fun related projects.

• GVSU STEM kit - using kits that are designed toincorporate real world concepts that pique studentinterests and critical thinking skills whilemotivating performance in STEM subjects.

• Many more fun, engaging activities!
