WELCOME

The Leadership Summit Planning Board has worked diligently to provide you with this leadership development opportunity. We are pleased that you have decided to join us for a day of education and shared experiences.

The philosophy of the Laker Leadership Programs at Grand Valley State University supports the belief that everyone has the ability to be a leader whether in an organization, in a classroom setting, or in the community. It is our hope that as you continue through today’s conference, you will learn that everyone can be a leader. The purpose of this conference is to provide campus leaders from across the state of Michigan with an educational opportunity to enhance personal leadership skills and development.

As you read through this program booklet, our educational sessions will be covering areas such as social justice, general leadership development, student organizations, personal development, professional development, and civic engagement. These sessions will enhance your leadership skills and help to develop your individual abilities. We also hope that you will utilize this opportunity to network with other college students as well as professionals during the conference.

If at any point throughout the day you have any questions or comments, please feel free to address a conference staff member or volunteer, as designated by their name badge. Once again, thank you for dedicating your day to developing yourself as a leader—we hope that you enjoy your experience at Leadership Summit 2020!

Jess Ekstrom

Jess Ekstrom is considered one of the top motivational speakers. Jess has made appearances on the TODAY show, Good Morning America, the Hallmark Channel, Inside Edition, and People Magazine.

Jess Ekstrom is the founder and CEO of Headbands of Hope, a company she started in her junior year dorm room. For every headband sold, a headband is given to a child with cancer. She has donated over half a million headbands to every children’s hospital in America and 15 countries.

Ekstrom was inspired due to an internship at a wish-granting organization for kids with life-threatening illnesses. Ekstrom discovered that many kids who lose their hair from chemotherapy enjoy wearing headbands after hair loss, but they were only given wigs and hats. Once she noticed there was a need that wasn’t being met, she created a business that would fill the gap.

Whether or not you are a new or seasoned student leader, relationship building is critical to the success of your student organization. One of the key components to making the team effective, is fostering a culture of open dialogue and friendship. People underscore the importance and power of icebreakers, so we want to chisel away that iceberg and teach you ice breakers that are worthwhile. Know Your CurrencyPresenter: Catharyn Palomino

So many of us spend our lives by trying to compete with others. We compare, we judge, we criticize, and, in the meantime, we ignore what we have that makes us unique. Being able to identify your currency and value, being able to gain confidence in your currency and value and being able to stop comparing your currency and value to others eliminates a lot of unnecessary anxiety. This frees up your time and your energy to give your very best to what you know you can do and in knowing who you are.

Vulnerability: The Hidden Strength of Authentic LeadershipPresenter: Caroline Murray

Let’s get uncomfortable! Most of us consider vulnerability to be a weakness but it can actually be one of your greatest strengths as a leader! This presentation looks to break down the barriers we build for ourselves and explain how vulnerability can be used to foster genuine connection and navigate challenging conversations. This session will equip you with the PAIRS dialogue facilitation tool that you can directly apply to any conversation. After this presentation, you will walk away with tools for surviving (and thriving) when you are faced with having tough talks and the need to mediate conflict.

Social Justice and Open AccessPresenter: Jon Jeffryes

Open access, the decision by authors and publishers to make their scholarship available to any reader at no charge, levels the playing field. It makes the traditional class systems of education equitable domestically and allows countries with fewer resources and a less-developed higher education infrastructure the ability to learn and to grow without the barrier of a paywall. Open access publishing gives small institutions and independent scholars the ability to have similar resources to large research institutions and university-affiliated faculty. Academia does not have to be a system of elite and hierarchical structures. It has the potential to begin on a level playing field. Social justice directly interacts with the support of open access at the college level. This session will give students, faculty, and staff key facts and figures about the cost of information and potential savings of open access as well as action steps for advocacy.

I’m More than My MajorPresenter: Lisa Knapp

“My major is ________, what am I qualified to apply for?” Asking yourself the same question? If you aren’t right now, you probably have or probably will as it is one of the most common questions asked in the Career Center. Truth is, employers don’t look at majors in the same way schools do. Employers are trying to answer the question, “What can this person do for me?” In other words, what skills and experiences do you have that will help them contribute to their workplace. This interactive session will help you answer the question “What am I qualified for?” based on your own personal qualities, experiences, values, and education.

Does the media have an ability to propagate microaggressions?Presenters: Claudia Leiras and Alisha Davis

Microaggressions are subtle insults directed towards an individual or a group of people as a way to “put down” the targeted individual/group affect every interaction one experiences. These are often unconscious statements that affirm stereotypes and are commonly used by dominant/non-target groups to classify individuals in target groups. Often, individuals perpetrating microaggressions intend no insult/offense and tend to be unaware of the harm they are caused the targeted individual/group. This interactive session will explore how the media routinely use microaggressions to emphasize negative stereotypes and the impact this has on creating an uncivil society.
