ABOUT NOCCA e New Orleans Center for Creative Arts is Louisiana’s premier public arts training center for high school students, providing intensive instruction in culinary arts, creative writing, dance, media arts, music (classical, jazz, vocal), theatre arts (drama, musical theatre, theatre design) and visual arts, while demanding simultaneous academic excellence. NOCCA was founded in 1973 by a diverse coalition of artists, educators, business leaders, and community activists who saw the need for an institution devoted to our region’s burgeoning young talent. Some notable alumni include: Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, opera singer; Nicole Cooley, novelist and poet; Harry Connick, Jr., musician and actor; Terence Blanchard, musician; Anthony Mackie, film and Broadway actor; Terrance Osborne, visual artist; Wendell Pierce, actor; Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis, musicians. e program is tuition-free to all Louisiana students who meet audition requirements. • Studentsreadliterature,examinevisualculture,studythearts,lookatprimarydocuments,andreadsocialandpoliticaltheorythatissituatedhistoricallyorthematicallywithinafieldofstudyatanygiventime,sothatstudents’encounterswiththearts,governments,economies,religions,sociallife,andculturalproductionarecontextualized.

• Facultyfosteranexpectationthatstudentsdevelopcertainhabitsofmindthatprivilegequestioning,criticalandcreativethinking,analysis,andattentiontoevidencethatareimperativeforbeingartistsandintellectualswhoareactivelyandcriticallyengagedintheworldaroundthem.

TheAcademicStudioisNOCCA’sfull-day,diploma-grantinghighschoolpreparingstudentsadmittedbyartsaudition,butwithoutregardtocurrentorpastacademicachievement,forsuccessfulcareersasleadersinthearts.Theinstructionalmodel,incontrasttothe“sitandgetandgiveitback”approachoftraditional-especiallyelite-highschools,isinspiredbytheartsandemphasizescollaboration,project-basedlearning,inquiryandcriticalthinking.

Inadditiontothecreditsstudentsearnintheirrespectiveartsdisciplines,studentsintheAcademicStudiotaketwodouble-blockacademiccoursesperyear:IntegratedHumanitiesI-IVandIntegratedSciencesI-IV.Studentsalsoearntwocreditsofalanguageoftheirchoiceandotherrequiredelectivesincludinghealthandphysicaleducation–asrequiredforhighschoolgraduationandTOPSeligibility.Abasiccoursesequenceislistedbelow.
