The 2nd albun by this upstate New Yorkgroup is a fine example of the currentstate of progresslve bluegrass. Bottl-eHlllrs contenporary sound is a bLend ofwell- established bluegrass thenes withbits of Jazzr country swlng' & lightrock. It is the ability of bluegrassto adapt to the tines that has allowedit to gain lncreaslng popularity withboth traditional folk nuslc enthusiasts& hard roek freaks.I suspeet that 'l[orning ],ight" r theopening track on the albun, ls theband's attenpt ts create a hit singLe.Uith its double tracked lead vocal byWalt llichael lt hae a slickr but pleas-lng feellng. "For No One" rldes on thecoat-tails of the current revival ofBeatLes nuslcr & represents the popuusic fteld on this disc.Fron "Atnrt I Sonethlng', a Hank Wi1-llamE tune, conea the Llne ehosen forthe title of the albun. A hamnered dulclnerrnedley lncludes sone flast5r gultar. &fiddLe licks that splce up what wouldothersiEe be an ordJ.nary rendltton of3 standard dance tunes. Barry Mltter-hoff shines on mandolin & hl.s arrange-nent of "Bluegrass Autunn" ie nost out-standlng.Bottle Hill's nusic can be readily iden-tifled by its frequent changes in neter& key within lndlvldual selectlone. At-though these changes are often une:rpect-edr they are e:pertly executed & offera pleaslng contiast to standardl unifornbluegrass nusic.BottLe Hll-l has always been knonn forIts recklesa aense of htunorr & not wish-lng to dleappolnt thelr fans on this.albun, close with "!he 01d Neon Cross'by dobro-p1,ayer Rex Hunt. Sure to be-coDe a bluegrass classic alongside "IGave Her the Ringr She Gave Me the Fin-E€r"e et a1r it features a heartf, hbobbii€ Biuy Grahan choir & tellsthe'tale of one nan rescued fron theevils of drink by a dazzllng electriesynbol of falth.

JAtl 117 7WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT A WINTER WEEKEND?

tfhat on earth do you do on a winter weekend? No performers? No elasees? No concerts? No schedule? Our winter weekends are quitedifferent from the spring and fa]l eventsr you night like to know justwhat went on at last year's.

The maln event was so sinpler our orn music. It happened oftenand anywhere. There were other kinds of activities, but music wasalways being made somewhere by someone. Friday night it was a good-sj.zed gatherlng in the main lounge (very eomfortable--carpeted andupholstered) while a smaller group worked on a jigsaw nearby, ofteneinging along. Saturday norning the groups were smaller--two or threeswapping songs or instrunent hints in several corners of the mainbuilding. I remember a pleasant few minutes with a friend, two autoharps'and "0n Top of OLd Smokyr" of all things. It was Saturday rnorning thatI picked up a dulcimer for the first time, whi.eh was instant passion--I bought ny own a few months later. I think ny favorite singing of theweekenO wa-s the group of 15 or 20 that began Saturday afternoon as abored-looking bunch sitting around wondering what ts do and suddenlyblossoned into a lively session of unaccompanied chorus' gospel'rounde, and old favorites (harnrony, harmony). Hated to see suppertineeone and break it up.

Runor has it that there were other things to do. Some went skiingSaturday afternoon. Sone whole Pinewoods families were wi.th us, andthose with children especially took advantage of the winter sports athand. We could see through the picture window that tobogganing on thehllt behind the lounge was popular. I heard that someone from the hotel1ed a long walk through the snowy woods that shouldn't have been missed.

, The muslc-making Saturday night started right after supper, withev'ilryone gathering ii tne louirge (exeept those iho d,ancect foi a whilewlth a hotel staff menber who enjoys teaching East European folkdancing). Song-leading and instrunents were passed around the room.Eventually, as a).ways happens, a. smaller group accumulated in the nextroon, and two different kinds of rnusic carried on for many hours more.Irooking backl I'd say it was more or less an infonnal dlvision intosingers with i-nstrrrme :s in one room and unaccompanied singing i- theother. Sone people **ndered back and forth from one roon to the---,ther.Both went on forever.- Three of us lasted almost to 5:00 &.!Ilr

All I remember alier breakfast on Sunday morning is almoet ?6ffingasleep on a nice soft couch listening to quite a large group swapping(haven't we sung everything yet?) and again watching the kids ontoboggans. I remember hearing some original songsr some hymns, andaome banjor/chorus eongs. I soon gave up napping.

The food nas good, too--freshr ample, tasty, and intelligentlyprepared. We enJoyed ordering breakfast (this year I plan to try myfirst lox-and-bagel breakfast) and having some choices at other meals.Solway Houee is, after all, a hotel and we are guests at a resort--itadds a nice touch of luxury. Another luxury is the fact that we haveSoJ.way House al.l to ourselves on that weekend.

But what nqkes the 'winter weekend really special is time. Therewas tine to eing every note, make new friends, tune an autoharp (nowthat's ;!s9, Bwap banjo tunings, learn (mernorize) a whole new song totake holtre. . . .

And I don't remember a single tape recorder'
