What we offer: The OVWSG offers workshops on topics of interest to weavers, spinners and other textile artists. Our courses range in diffi-culty from absolute beginner to advanced techniques. Class sizes are small, most workshops have a maximum of 6 students. Workshops are taught by instructors who have significant experience in both their chosen topics and in teaching adults.

OVWSG Studio and Class room at Heartwood house 404 McArthur Ave Ottawa

Where are we located? Unless otherwise indicated all workshops are held in either our Studio or Classroom located in Heartwood House 404 McAr-thur Ave, parking is available on the street and in the back parking lot after 5pm and on weekends (please do not park in the front lot which is reserved for the businesses located there). We are also easily accessible by bus—check the OC Transpo site for routes and schedules. Enter via the main entrance in the centre of the building. After hours and on weekends use the intercom to buzz the Classroom or Studio. Your instructor will buzz you into the foyer then come to let you in the inner doors. The Studio is located on the first floor, the classroom is upstairs.

When are the workshops? Our workshop schedule runs from January to December 2017. More workshops can be added by requesting them from the Registrar (see “By Request” instructions). Workshops are generally scheduled on weekends but we can offer a few during the week. If a group of students would prefer a weekday or weeknight workshop please contact the Registrar. If you don't see exactly the topic you are looking for, please refer to our "By Request" page on the website and page 4 of the cata-logue for instructions.

Why choose our workshops? Our small class size offers a better learning experience. The new Studio is comfortable, bright and inviting. Equipment is provided for use during workshops unless otherwise specified. Please advise the Registrar if you would like to bring your own.

What to bring: Many workshops have a "to bring" list in the description which are items the instructor expects you to provide. There may also be a materials fee listed which is payable directly to the instructor at the workshop. Equipment for most workshops is provided at no cost, however, if students take equipment home a deposit cheque is required. Equipment must be returned at the end of the workshop unless arrangements have been made to allow students a few days after to finish projects. In this case the equipment must be returned at the next monthly Guild meeting. If equipment for a workshop is required before the workshop start date (e.g. the instructor expects students to come with looms already warped) you must collect it and pro-vide a deposit cheque at the monthly meeting just prior to the workshop start date.

Food for lunch: You are welcome to bring your lunch and snacks. A refrigerator, microwave and Keurig coffee maker are available for your use. Coffee pods are $0.75 or you may bring your own. There are also several fast food restaurants nearby.

How to register Complete course descriptions, including dates and registration and materials fees are available on our website www.ovwsg.com under "workshops". To register, first complete the online registration form. Once received the Registrar will ensure that space is available. Depending on the payment option chosen either a PayPal invoice or a confirmation email with an address to direct your cheque to will be sent to the email address you provide on the form. This may take a few days as we have yet to automate this part of the process. Registration is complete only when payment is received, until then your spot is not guaranteed. A minimum of 4 paid registrations are required in order for a workshop to run, workshops with fewer than 4 completed registrations at least 2 weeks before their start date will be cancelled. Payment is either by PayPal or cheque. Payment in full is due 8 weeks before the workshop start date. Cancellations made 2-8 weeks prior to the start date will be refunded 75% of the registration fee. No refunds for cancellation less than 2 weeks prior to the start date. If the OVWSG cancels a workshop for any reason there will be a full refund. Questions should be directed to the Registrar at [email protected].

Interested children and youth under the age of 16 can participate in most of our workshops if accompanied by an adult. The adult does not have to participate in the workshop but must remain in the room with the child. Please advise the Registrar if registering a child.

By Request instructions: 1) Choose a topic—this can be a workshop from the suggested “By Request” list at the end of each section of the catalogue or another of your choosing. Those on the suggested list already have instructors availa-ble, however, the Registrar will work with you to find instructors for other topics. 2) Collect a group of at least 4 students—ask your friends, post in the OVWSG groups on Facebook or Ravelry.com, put a note in the newsletter, or make an announcement at a meeting, demo or social. The onus is on prospective students to put groups togeth-er. Use the By Request form on the website to pro-vide details of your request. 3) The By Request Coordinator will set up the work-shop for you based on your request and the availabil-ity of the instructor and classroom space. She will then contact your workshop group and finalize dates, times and costs with you. Once your group has agreed to the workshop as final-ized each student is expected to register individually using the workshop registration form and to provide payment by PayPal or cheque. Failure to have at least 4 students register and complete payment promptly will result in cancellation of the workshop. 4) If there are spaces left unfilled in your workshop it will be advertised to the Guild so that others may join you.

About this Catalogue The Catalogue is broken up by topic:

Weaving, Spinning, Dyeing, Felting and Basketry. At the beginning of each topic, you will find information spe-cific to that group of workshops. If applicable, there will be “Where do I start” section in which we will give you a suggest-ed order to take workshops. Please note the descriptions for Level of instruction so you can select a workshop you will feel comfortable taking.

We will let you know if there is a refresher course available for this topic. There will be a list of some of the workshops available by re-quest. There is a tab on most pages that will let you keep track of where you are in the catalogue. Always consult the website for the most current workshop information. Beginner (B) Student is new to the subject and has no experi-ence. Or a student who would like to take a thorough refresher in the topic. There is no expectation of prior knowledge for this workshop.

Novice (N) Student has some experience, has taken at least one class in the subject. These workshops are for beginners who want to refine skills from the be-ginner workshop or develop more skill and tech-nique. Expectation of familiarity with the general concept but may still require prompting or assis-tance in preforming some of the steps required in the topic. (Warp the loom with a few remind-ers / Not fully consistent ability to spin with a drop spindle or wheel. But grasping the general concept.)

Intermediate (I) Student is familiar with the subject, feels comfort-able working in the topic and has some experi-ence. Students have completed several classes and have a developed vocabulary as well as a gen-eral knowledge of the subject. Knowledge from the beginner level workshops is assumed and will not necessarily be reviewed. Students should be comfortable starting and fin-ishing projects. This workshop will be covering new material or refining a technique. (Comfortable independently warping a loom and winding a warp and basic drafting/ comfortable independently with spinning on wheel or drop spindle)

Advanced (A) Student is capable of working independently at a high skill and knowledge level in the topic. Usual-ly students have several years of training. Expec-tation that the student has a thorough working knowledge of beginner and intermediate con-cepts is assumed. This level workshop will com-bine concepts, present advanced technique and will be more challenging for the student.

Inkle 1 -Intro to Inkle, Set-up and Weave a Narrow Band (B) Instructor: Jan Scott Course # 1707 Sat Jan 28, 2017 Description: The Inkle loom can weave narrow bands of fabric up to 3”wide. It is one of the simplest types of loom, having only two sheds. Don’t let others lead you down the path of harness envy! Think of all the complications of 16 harness tie-up then happily turn to your Inkle loom with only 2! The limited number of harnesses will inspire greater creativity. The placement of colour, texture or even the introduction of embellishments will enable you to develop many patterns with a very simple relaxing loom. If you ever tire of weaving flat bands, I will show you how to weave a tubular band! You will focus on how to set up and weave on an Inkle Loom and learn to make loop heddles for any Inkle loom. We will also learn weaving techniques to start, stop and make slits in an Inkle band. We will make a scissors pocket necklace, which is functional and looks good too! Inkle Warping Refresher (Half Day) (N) Instructor: Jan Scott Course # 1710 Sat Feb 25, 2017 Description: So you got distracted by the Smarties and forgot how to do the magic knot at the beginning of the warp? Have no fear a review is here. This is a practical review so bring your loom. And we will wind another warp! Let’s make it one with lots of colour changes so you get to practice tying on new colours! Most people need to do a task a few times before it sticks in your brain. We will wind a thin band with colour changes. we will review starting and stopping weaving. We will also re-view ways to help keep your edges neat as you weave. We will also dis-cuss winding a warp using two warp threads at once. Level: Novice (N) Prerequisite: Inkle 1 or equivalent Class Size: 6 Location: Studio Time: 1pm to 4pm Students should bring: The notes from Intro to Inkle and preferably #3 crochet, mercerized or perle cotton in a light, a

dark and variegated colours. Inkle loom, shuttle, string heddles or good rug warp to make more string heddles. Please let the registrar know if you need to borrow a guild loom. You may find some at the Salvation Army thrift store, Value Village, Walmart, Michaels or a yarn store. (Cheap to more expensive) you can also order on line Camilla Valley Farm has 3/2 UKI mercerized (perle) cotton in lots of colours (it is more lustrous than Brassards). Remember smooth yarns with a good twist are ideal for inkle weaving.

· Crochet cotton #3 size will warp and weave quickly. · #5 will require a bit more warping to get the same width. · While #10 is the most commonly found crochet cotton it will give a very subtle pattern and will take a lot longer to warp the same width as #3 or #5.

Description: Let’s take a look at how pattern is created using a two harness inkle loom. I know those Smarties from Intro to Inkle were a bit distracting and we were focusing more on getting you up and weaving rather than getting into the fun of pattern making, so let’s go back and take another look at how a warp faced pattern can be created. We will also review how it can be recreated from an existing band. This is a short workshop that will not require your loom.

Whether you are a new weaver who wants to see the process “one more time” before trying it on your own or an expert weaver who wants to learn new tricks this workshop is for you. Crumb warping, using multiple yarns in the warp, will also be demon-strated. While this demonstration will be on a table loom, the techniques are the same for a floor loom.

At the first meeting students will each plan a project such as a shawl, set of placemats, long runners or two scarves. Design-ing a project including choosing and calculating materials needed will be cov-ered. Students will then have 2 weeks to gather their materials. Inkle 2 -This is Inkle Too Supplemental Warp, Weft and More (2 Days)(I) Instructor: Jan Scott Course # 1712 Sat March 11, 25, 2017 Description: Has the unthinkable happened? Are you bored with plain weave bands? Then let’s try something differ-ent! Let`s do picot, Raya, fringes, weaving with wire, supplementary warp or weft and more on the Inkle loom. Don't think of two harnesses as a limitation think of it as an opportunity to be more crea-tive. You only need two harnesses to create stable fabric so let’s have some fun. We will be making samples of some of the most unexpected techniques you can do on an Inkle loom. home work between week one and two will be a pouch to hold your phone or audio book reader using any of the techniques you have learned. we will also use a fringe twister to create the strap. NB: Floor Inkle loom is preferred, the Guild has 3 available, table Inkle looms are also available but may need to be rethreaded during class. Fun with Krokbragd - Norwegian 3 Shaft Weaving (I) Instructor: Liz Bivens Course # 1706 Sat Jan 21, 2017 Description: Krokbragd is a Norwegian word meaning “crooked path”. The weave structure is woven on 3 shafts. Patterns are created through the sequence of colours used in the weft. A wide variety of patterns are possible on this simple weave structure. Students will learn the basics of weaving and designing with Krok-bragd. Looms must be warped before the workshop. Guild looms will be available for pick up at the January meeting and must be returned by Monday Jan 30, 2017. Traditional Woven Tapestry (3 days) (I) Instructor: Nancy Ingram Course # 1725 Sat & Sun April 22, 23, 30, 2017

Description: During this 3 day workshop students will weave a series of samples in 3 val-ues of grey wool to learn a variety of tapestry techniques. The 3 values of grey will help to illustrate the effect of the various techniques. The students will explore the design theories associated with the samples which may then be used in designing their final tapestry. Fin-ishing techniques will be discussed. This workshop will be taught on the Guild’s Rigid Heddle looms. Students are expected to warp the loom before class, Rigid Heddle Instructor Eliza-beth Watt will be available to assist with warping during a Monday evening social in early April.

Transparent Tapestry (2 days) (I)

Description: Learn how to create a tapestry using the transparent tapes-try inlay technique. This is a two day workshop. Participants will warp their looms ahead of time using 16/2 line linen. The workshop itself will com-mence with a presentation on the transparent weaving technique, includ-ing a discussion of the design theory of negative and positive space used in this type of tapestry weaving. Participants will weave a series of samples to explore a variety of inlay techniques and designs. They will then design and weave a tapestry using the inlay technique in the open weave structure. There will also be a discussion of finishing techniques.

Instructor: Sayward Johnson Course # 1708 Sat & Sun Feb 04, 05, 11 & 12, 2017 Description: This four-day class covers the basics of weaving with copper wire. Students will create a variety of woven samples with which they can experiment. The class covers techniques for hammering and shaping, using green patina solutions, black patina, and heat. This class is flexible and can accommodate all levels of experience. Experimentation is encouraged! A brief intro to knitting with copper wire can be included.

Introduction to Multi-shaft Weaving (4 days) (I) Instructor: Marianne (Mandy) Heggveit Course # 1713 Sun March 19, 26, April 2, 9, 2017 Description: There is no better loom than a regular 4 shaft floor loom. However, many weave structures such as true satin for example, require more than 4 shafts. Having mastered the funda-mentals of 4-shaft weaving, students will become familiar with the basic principles and versatility of multi-shaft structures and investigate the design possibilities available to them when using `more than four'. Structures investigated include; twills and twill variations, grouped threadings, satin and grouped threadings such as twill blocks . At the conclusion of this course weavers will no longer be confined to copying patterns out of books or from the internet but, understanding the structures, be able to design and adapt them to suit their projects and aesthetic.

The ob-jective of this workshop is to de-mystify the successful approach to col-our and make artists comfortable working with this important design element. This workshop consists of lectures on colour theory and in-cludes topics such as colour harmonies, contrasts of colours and their interaction. These lectures are followed by hands-on exercises with col-oured paper that will familiarize the students with the many fascinating elements of colour and their successful use in textiles. This workshop is equally useful to weavers of all types, spinners and oth-er textile artists.

Wheel Works and Maintenance -Care and Feeding of Spinning Wheels (B) Instructor: - Alison James Course #1737 Sun Feb 26, 2017 Description: This course is designed for those wanting to get the most mechanically out of their spinning wheels. We will discuss how the various drive systems work, and the ways to set them up for optimal performance. Cleaning, lubrication and polishing of different types of wheels will be covered, as will some simple resto-ration procedures. This is a hands-on class. Bring your wheel and its problems. Learn to Spin on a Spindle Wheel (B) Instructor: Gordon Moat Course # 1700 Sat Nov 11, 2017 Description: Learn to spin the easy way! A spindle wheel is simply a drop spindle turned horizontal with a drive wheel added. The primary focus will be hands on spinning on a great or walking wheel. Additional background on different types of great wheels seen in eastern Ontario will be provided. Great wheels like any older tool have a per-sonality of their own - students will learn ways to cope, dance and relax with the wheel. Special bonus!! Learn Sir John A. Plying (N) Instructor: Elizabeth Watt Course # 1751 Sat April 29, 2017 Description: You have control of your singles, now master plying them into even, balanced yarns. This skill is a prerequisite for the unbalanced plying techniques that are the basis for many novelty or art yarns. We will practice a variety of techniques for 2, 3, and 4 ply yarns from bobbins and balls, discussing why we ply and planning for plying. Time per-mitting, we will begin to explore some of the basic novelty plying tech-niques. Preparation: Students will be asked to prepare several bobbins of speci-fied singles yarn from supplied fibre to bring to class. The instructor will be available in early April to provide guidance.

If you are interested in understanding the processes that occur before your fibre gets to your wheel or loom you may be inter-ested in these courses. There are many ways to prepare your fibre for spinning, felting or dyeing. The choice of which preparation to use will have a distinctive outcome on the finished product. For a sleek smooth yarn, the long toothed combs and a diz may be in your future but are they Viking combs or English combs? If you’re wanting to make a soft fluffy sweater then hand carders or drum carder may be for you. As you are preparing your fibre you could be mixing colours or fibre types. But what do you get from a blend-ing board or hackles? Do different wheels require different preparations? Lets find out! We usually have workshops about various different fibre prepa-ration tools and also about the various fibres themselves. Felted Hat Spikes and Swirls (B) Instructor: Ann McElroy Course # 1730 Sun Jan 15, 2017 Description: Transform loose wool into a fabulous sculpted hat with a spike (or 2 or 3) and a swirl. Wide brimmed or narrow, curved or a toque, it's up to you. You will have a choice of colour and there will be lots of extra wool in many colours and some hand dyed silk in several forms for you to personal-ize your hat. Each person will leave with a finished hat.

Wet felted Bird House/Feeder (B) Instructor: Ann McElroy Course # 1734 Sun Mar 12, 2017 Description: A funky bird house or feeder for your fine feathered friends. Starting with loose wool we will make the felt and the bird house at the same time. Everyone leaves with a finished birdhouse or feeder. You will have a variety of shapes and sizes to choose from. You can pick your base col-our and there will be lots of extras to decorate with. The bird houses are weather resistant and meant to be hung outside to brighten your yard and provide a hip home or funky feeder for our feathered friends.

using needle felting techniques. They will first create a wool mat on which to needle felt the tapestry. They will then learn the principles of design as they apply to this technique; that is, the layering of colours to create depth in the tapestry. Once the tapestry is completed the participants will learn how to apply backing and matting to finish the work.

Laurie Harkin-Chiasson

Laurie is an enthusiastic fibre artist, with many diverse talents. She started basket weaving over 30 years ago and branched into loom weaving in 2000. She has re-ceived two awards for her weaving. Her teaching qualifications come from Transport Canada, as a flight instructor, teaching “ground school” to student pilots. Her work-shops are fun, packed with loads of information, plus tips and tricks to make your new skills easier to master.

Liz Bivens

Liz Bivens studied weaving at Cambrian College with Don Barton in the 70’s. She is Past President of the Sudbury and District Weavers and Spinners Guild as well as a Past President of the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners. Liz moved to Ottawa at the end of 2013.

Marianne (Mandy) Heggtveit Marianne Heggtveit has been weaving since 1972. She attended the OHS Weaving Instructors' Course I 1973-1975 (research: Exploring the Potential of the 2nd Warp Beam as a Design Element). She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa (Visual Arts) in 1980, attended numerous weaving workshops with national and international instructors and holds a M.A. in Canadian Studies from Carleton University. Marianne Heggtveit specializes in creating one of a kind fashion items, home accesso-ries, custom yardage for apparel and interiors. Every piece is unique and will never be reproduced. Her teaching experience includes: · Valley Fibres, Ottawa (Beginning and Intermediate Weaving, 1976 - 1980)) · Master Weaver Certificate classes at St. Laurence College, Brockville and at Sir Sanford Fleming College, Haliburton (Intermediate Weaving, Rug Weaving, Tapestry Weaving, Fashion Fabrics, Fabrics for Interiors, Introduction to Multi-Shaft Weaving, Colour and Design1980's) · OVWSG (2010 - present) In collaboration with Dini Moes, she co-authored No Common Tread, a limited edition hand weaving sample book that sold around the world from North- and South America to Japan and Australia and has since become a collector's item.

Nancy Ingram

Nancy Ingram, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, has pursued the study of design theory and its application in material arts throughout her career. She has been an active member of Guilds in Ontario and the Maritimes, has studied specialized weaving and spinning techniques in various workshops, and has participated regularly in juried art shows, exhibitions and craft markets throughout that time. Tapestry has been a primary focus, working in various techniques: traditional tapestry, transparent tapestry and fibre art tapestry, which more recently has included needle felting. She has also explored a num-ber of other applications of the needle felting technique. Her work has been widely collected and is held in a number of private collections throughout Cana-da and overseas.

Sayward Johnson Sayward Johnson was born in Danvers, Massachusetts. While studying at the Univer-sity of Ottawa, she fell in love with Canada and met her now husband. In 2004, after a decade spent working in forestry, Sayward decided to fol-low a dream inspired by her adventures in hand knitting and went to study art at NSCAD university (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada). She has never looked back. After gradu-ating from NSCAD, she moved to Montreal in order to study at the Cen-tre des Textiles Contemporains and take advantage of the studios at the l'École de Joaillerie de Montréal. In 2009 her daughter was born, and soon afterwards she and her husband moved back to his home region of Ottawa. Currently she is focused on her studio practice and making her-self part of the artistic community in Ottawa. She has exhibited her work at a number of shows across Canada and sold her work to private collec-tors in both the US and Canada. Sayward's website.

Alison James

Alison has been interested in fibre throughout her life, beginning with a Singer Sewing course at the age of 12. Further fibre arts study involved part time courses at George Brown College in Toronto, and Fashion Design and Creative Arts certificates from Algon-quin College. Alison has recently completed a fine arts diploma at the Ottawa School of Art. In recent years, her creative interests have turned to spinning and weaving. Alison recently has become very interested in the mechanics and maintenance of looms and wheels.

Ann McElroy

Ann lives on a working sheep farm in Eastern Ontario with her extended family. She has been felting for more than 10 years and takes pleasure in teaching and sharing her work through the Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild, and independent-ly. Ann enjoys exploring texture and colour through using different wools and fi-bres. The combining fine wool and fine woven fabric into nuno felt is a particular favourite. Recently she added her own felting kits to her repertoire. Ann shares her enthusiasm for felting through the Felting and Fiber Studio blog and forum.

Gordon Moat Gordon takes an interest in spindle spinning ranging from the drop spindle to great or walking wheels to pendulum and patented wheels. He demonstrates in 1860’s costume with these wheels as time permits. Another interest is the repair and return to life of these older wheels. From time to time this also involves teaching the owners how to spin on them. In July 2014 as part of the Ravelry Tour de Fleece he learned to spin on a Victoria pendulum wheel patented in Canada in 1866 made and marked by the inventor W. J. Lucas.

Judith Rygiel

Judith Rygiel has extensive experience in both weaving and teaching. She took her first weaving class 45 years ago and has loved it ever since. She earned both a Master Weaver certificate with the Guild of Canadian Weavers and an Ontario Handweavers and Spinners' Instructor's certificate in 1978. Judith returned to university later in life to study textile history, especially in Maritime Canada. She completed a Ph.D. in Canadian History from Carleton University in 2004. She has run a professional weaving studio for the past 40 years and is a specialist on Acadian textiles in both Maritime Canada and Louisiana.

Jan Scott Jan has a BA in fine art and art history as well as 3 years of commercial art. She has a love of textiles and texture. She has a large collection of looms and spinning wheels including a diminutive great wheel! She is try's to fit them all in a little house already full of books. She has been teaching clas-ses through the SCA and OVWSG on topics from silver point drawing to warp weighted looms but she really enjoys the simplicity and portability of the inkle band loom. Elizabeth Watt

Elizabeth received her Ontario Hand weavers and Spinners Master Spinner Certificate in 2011 upon completion of her in-depth study entitled "Pot as Mordant: In Search of a Safer Natural Dye Method". A serious knitter from the age of 14, she finally learned to spin while in Graduate School in Vermont. She joined the OVWSG in 1993. She be-gan teaching spinning at the OVWSG more than 15 years ago and has been introducing others to the joy of making yarn ever since. Having adamantly insisted she would not weave, she somehow allowed an Inkle and a Rigid Heddle loom into her Fibre Space and now enthusiastically shares her exploration of the extremely portable and versatile RH loom.

The OVWSG is large and active. We celebrated our 65th anniversary in September 2014. Our monthly meetings, which are open to the public, are held at

Heartwood House, 404 McArthur Ave Ottawa. (Check the ovwsg.com for all the details) This is also the location of our studio, extensive fiber related library and of course our workshops. You can find members of the guild volunteering at vari-ous community events demonstrating; weaving spinning felting and sometimes basketry around the city. Members of the Guild organize group purchases of yarn or fiber. We have frequent socials in the studio and foy-er. Members can join a group who will warp and weave projects together on the 100 inch Loom. This size of loom requires 2 weavers to operate and there are only a few guilds who have one. You are welcome to join us so please drop by one of our meetings.

You can find us at the Glebe community center the first weekend in November for our annual exhibition and sale.

Come see guild members demonstrate weaving and spinning.

We will raffle a hand handwoven item made by guild members on our 100 inch loom. This loom requires 2 people to weave on it.
