Leadership Essentials applies a highly conceptual perspective to leadership, focusing on 10 of the most impactful leader qualities and behaviors. The course

Objective

Page 7: New Leader Essentials (1)

Really think through this, because it actually matters.

Here’s a hint… Your job is not what you do, but the goal you pursue.

Why are you here?(What is your job?)

Page 8: New Leader Essentials (1)

The more I talk, the less you learn. To that end, all DocuStandard courses take a collaborative, interactive

and highly discussion based approach.

In short, I’m going to show you the way, and you are going to take us there.

Creativity and innovation are key to moving a business forward. To really get there, you must accept a certain level of risk and failure / mistakes.

Our leadership ghosts

Page 22: New Leader Essentials (1)

Channel your own leadership ghosts

● Write down your best and worst leaders, then

● Beneath each write down their 2 best & worst behaviors, then

● Combine best together, and worst together sorted most important to least important

Page 23: New Leader Essentials (1)

Discussion, critical thought & reasoning

● Now, time permitting, we’re going to discuss in detail (without names) each behavior on your best and worst behavior lists.

● Did we talk about them in our top 10?

Page 24: New Leader Essentials (1)

Our ghosts leave their mark on us

● Now, write your own name

● Beneath, list your 2 best & 2 worst behaviors

● Sort them by their impact or potential impact on your team

● Any similarities to your ghosts? Probably...

Page 25: New Leader Essentials (1)

You’ll be better. You have to be.

Really think deeply about the good and bad behaviors on your lists. Those are the most important successes & failures from your perspective. How can you enhance the good, throw away the bad?

Write your Leadership Vision? What will be your mark?

Page 26: New Leader Essentials (1)

My Leadership Vision

As a leader, I will create an environment that encourages smart, strategic

risk taking, challenging the status-quo everyday while building respect and

trust with my team by modeling consistent, fair and ethical standards.

Page 27: New Leader Essentials (1)

Share your vision

Important note - don’t change your vision if you hear something

awesome. No vision will be totally inclusive of everything. Some great

things will come naturally.

Your vision statement provides a benchmark for you, including what is

most important to you.

Nice job, you’ve made it to the beginning

The soft skills covered today are only conceptual. Applying them

makes them real. Practicing them provides the return on investment

by creating a true team, that even when things are difficult, works for a

common goal in a common way.

Page 29: New Leader Essentials (1)

And yes, you do have homework

Go to your team, as a group and ask them to give you one sentence

that would describe the most important leadership quality. Challenge

them to be specific, and determine if their priorities are on our list. If

not, let’s dive in more.
