Page 14: New Horizon College English

Let’s learn what the Bible tells us:

Page 15: New Horizon College English

Class talk:

1. Watch a chapter of the movie “Finding Nemo”( 海底总动员 ). Lack of communication is often the root of generation gap. Do you have this problem? What do you think of Nemo and his father?

2.2. Survey:Survey: where do people more likely communicate with their neighbors, in the country or in city? ( 问卷调查:乡下还是城里的邻里关系更加和谐? ) What are the possible causes?

3. Mobile phones are increasingly popular nowadays. Do you think they make personal communication easier or harder? What are the reasons?

Page 16: New Horizon College English

In this unit, you’ll learn one way of communication—to appreciate what the writer is trying to pass on to you through his writing.

First of all, let’s discuss:

When you have done something wrong, you feel …

ashamed of yourself

guilty

embarrassed

Page 17: New Horizon College English

When you fail to do something, you feel …

upset

helpless

hopeless

frustrated

Page 18: New Horizon College English

When you run into something unexpected, you feel …

surprised

scared

amazed

shocked

How many words and phrases of emotion do you know and would you like to share with us some of them?

Page 19: New Horizon College English

However, do we always have to be that straightforward?

Is it possible for us to share our feelings with others in another way, in this case, through reading, and later through writing?

Certainly!

But HOW?

Let’s take Passage A from this unit for example. Read the passage once more and figure out:

Page 20: New Horizon College English

What kind of feeling the widow shared with Elizabeth Jolley in Cabin Fever?

OR: What would be the answer to Paragraph Two: Why are these lines so painful?

She loved and missed her husband very much.

What message do you get from Paragraph 4, specifically the following sentence “One sat in a car, crying; another stood surrounded by sympathizers offering pity.”?

Some of the couple’s relatives, including the mothers, regarded their marriage as a great loss of the families and therefore were upset even at the wedding ceremony .

Page 21: New Horizon College English

Try to work on the rest of the passage and passage B in the unit and share more feelings with the widow and the trashman.

Next, we are going to read part of a passage, telling a tragedy that happened on a father. Do the first reading and produce as many words as you know to describe the father’s emotional status.

Passage

Page 22: New Horizon College English

surprised, confused, shocked, broken-hearted, passionate, helpless,…

Now have a second look at the paragraphs respectively to have some further appreciation of the discourse.

1 My wife Tina and I were preparing for an evening out in the Spanish resort of Torremolinos when the phone rang. At first I hardly recognized the voice of my eldest daughter Susannah. She was extremely upset and barely coherent. She could tell us only, “Andrew and Alexander; they’ve been found dead.”

Have a close study on the underlined parts and tell the class how do you think the father must have felt ?

Page 23: New Horizon College English

He was surprised to get the unexpected call. (… WHEN…)

He was confused about the way his daughter talked over the phone. ( SHE WAS EXTREMELY UPSET AND BARELY COHERENT.)

The news he got was unbelievable –Andrew and Alexanderhad died and no one knew why yet. ( …FOUND DEAD.)

Page 24: New Horizon College English

2 My son Andrew, 26, and his 17-year-old half-brother Alexander Woodcraft, my former wife’s son, had been staying the night at Andrew’s flat in Lincoln. The two had been to a pub concert. At first the news did not sink in. Tina and I were stunned as we got the first available flight home four hours later. It had to be a mistake. After we landed we drove straight to Lincolnshire to my ex-wife’s house. It was only then that I found out that the boys had been shot. How would you interpret the underlined parts?

Shocked as they were, the father and his wife would not accept the fact until they hurried home and learned the tragedy in person from his ex-wife. ( DID NOT SINK IN; WERE STUNNED; THE FIRST AVAILABLE FLIGHT; IT WAS THEN THAT …)

Page 25: New Horizon College English

3 Before working as a legal assistant for Bedfordshire County Council, I had spent 30 years in the police—20 of them as a detective. Working on many gruesome murder cases, drugs investigations, regional crime, antiterrorism and robbery, I thought I had witnessed just about the full range of human violence and misery. I was now to find out that nothing prepares you for the death of one of your own children.

As an experienced police who had coped with all sorts of crime, he had regarded himself as tough; still, facing the tragedy, he appeared so weak-- he had to admit that he could never be ready to witness the death of his loved ones.

He had found another “HE” inside him. What is it?

Page 26: New Horizon College English

4 Andrew, a brilliantly gifted writer, had already had one volume of verse published, and nearly finished another. All hopes, dreams and ambitions lay wasted in the pale lifeless body of my much-loved son that I had to identify in the hospital mortuary. I could hardly speak as I gave him a last kiss.

A vivid picture of a broken-hearted father-- when giving his son a last kiss, he realized helplessly that his beloved, promising son, had left the world for good, taking away with him all his hopes, dreams and ambition.. (A BRILLIANT, GIFTED WRITER,.. ALL HOPES, DREAMS, … LAY WASTED IN THE PALE, LIFES BODY OF …)

What has come into your mind as you read this paragraph?

Page 27: New Horizon College English

So, communication can be carried out not only through speaking, but also through reading and writing. Would you like to have a try?

• Suggestions on further practice:

1. Do more readings from the NHE series and try to communicate with the writers to appreciate more of the language they use.

2. Write a passage telling your first experiences at college, try to avoid using specific words of emotion but describe your experience in such a way that your readers will share your feelings on your first few days at college. Since you are writing your experiences, keep in mind the time sequence structure mentioned on page 134.

Paragraph 1

Alone now, the widow reads considerably. She used to underline favorite passages to share with her husband. Now, in a notebook, she stores quotations like this one from Elizabeth Jolley's Cabin Fever: "I experience again the deep-felt wish to be part of a married couple, to sit by the fire in winter with the man who is my husband. So intense is this wish that if I write the word husband on a piece of paper, my eyes fill with tears."

Page 55: New Horizon College English

A question about Paragraph 1• Why did the widow write down the quotations like

this one? A. Because she read a lot. B. Because she wanted to share them with her husband. C. Because she had a habit of writing quotations in a notebook. D.Because these quotations are touching.

• Key: D

Page 56: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 3• We begin with a worn wedding album.

In the first picture, the bride and groom are facing, with uncertain smiles, a church filled with relatives and friends. The bride did not wear glasses that day, so everything was a blur of candlelight and faces.

• Read the paragraph and determine whether the following statements are true or not.

Page 57: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 4• They walked to the back of the church

and stood at the door as their guests filed past. From colleagues and old schoolmates came cheerful good wishes clothed in friendly jokes. Some relatives, however, were not pleased. One sat in a car, crying; another stood surrounded by sympathizers offering pity. Both these women-mothers of the bride and groom-would have insisted they wanted only the best for their children but they defined "the best" as staying home to help support the family.

Page 58: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 8

• Soon they departed, in a borrowed car. With money loaned by the groom's brother, they could afford a honeymoon at a state-park lodge. Sitting before a great oak fire, they recalled the events of the day, especially the strange message conveyed by Aunt Esther Gubbins.

Page 59: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 13

• The couple's life together was very ordinary. Peculiarly, neither ever asked "Whose job is this?" or asserted "That is not my responsibility!" Both acted to fill their needs as time and opportunity allowed.

Page 60: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 15

• Occasionally, usually around their anniversary, they would bring up the old curiosity regarding Aunt Esther Gubbins. He would insist the elderly woman did attend their wedding accidentally. But she knew "Aunt Esther" was on some heavenly mission.

Page 61: New Horizon College English

Paragraph 19• The next morning she saw he had written b

elow her message: "Wife, I missed you. You thought I was asleep, but I was just resting my eyes and thinking about that peculiar woman who talked to us in church a long time ago. It has always seemed to me that she was the wrong shape for a heavenly messenger. Anyway, it's time to stop wondering whether she came from heaven or a nearby town. What matters is this: whoever she was, Aunt Esther Gubbins was right."

Page 62: New Horizon College English

to sit by the fire in winter• Why did Elizabeth Jolley

mention this particular place in this context?

• A fireplace is a comfortable and cozy place for a family gathering in winter, a symbol of family warmth in the Western tradition.

• What is the similar symbol of family warmth in Chinese tradition?

Page 63: New Horizon College English

to sit by the fire in winter

• kang • an exercise

Page 64: New Horizon College English

I experience again the deep-felt wish to be part of a married couple, to sit by the fire in winter with the man who is my husband.

Write a sentence following the pattern of the sentence above.

I experience again the longed-for relaxation at home, to sit on the kang, smoking and watching my cat.

Page 65: New Horizon College English

Questions for Para. 3• The wedding pictures were blur because the

bride did not wear glasses.

• Wrong. We don’t know whether they took pictures at the wedding. Everything was blur is the result of the bride not wearing glasses: to the shorted-sighted bride, everything was blur. But to others with a normal sight, everything was clear.

Page 66: New Horizon College English

Questions for Para. 3• The couple had a wedding album that was

worn because of its long time.

• Not sure. We don’t know whether the couple took pictures of their wedding and put them into an album. Album in the text is a metaphor, referring to history.

Page 67: New Horizon College English

Questions for Para. 3• The couple at the wedding did not know for

sure whether they loved each other.

• Wrong. They were certain of their love but uncertain of blesses of their mothers

Page 68: New Horizon College English

From colleagues and old schoolmates came cheerful good wishes clothed in friendly jokes.

• Express the sentence again, avoiding using clothed.

• From colleagues and old schoolmates came cheerful good wishes in the form of friendly jokes.

• From colleagues and old schoolmates came cheerful good wishes in friendly jokes.

Page 69: New Horizon College English

Both these women-mothers of the bride and groom-would have insisted they wanted only the best for their children • A grammatical rule we have learned before says that

the clause following insist needs a subjunctive mood in the form of should + infinitive. Why does the author use wanted instead of want in the clause? Does she break the rule?

• No. The subjunctive mood in such a case indicates a strong opinion. In this case, the clause is the opinion of the mothers, but not necessarily a strong opinion.

Page 70: New Horizon College English

With money loaned by the groom's brother, they could afford a honeymoon at a state-park lodge. • What does the word state-park tell you

besides the fact that it is a beautiful place?Low cost. Here is an extract from the California State Park website:

Day Use Fees Effective as of July 1 2004 Reservations and Fees At most parks, Day Use Fees are charged for parking only. There is no charge to walk or bike into these parks. Most historical parks and museums charge a Day Use Fee per person.

Page 71: New Horizon College English

I told her, 'Listen, lady, I've got an I.Q. of 137, and I graduated near the top of my high school class. I do this for the money, not because it's the only work I can do."

Learning Idioms

The meaning of idiomatic expressions can be very hard — even impossible — to guess. Word formations in dictionaries don’t always help, and can even fool us entirely! Idioms grow out of events and usage within the specific culture, which is why learning the cultural behavior is as important— and maybe more important in some instances —as ( than ) learning the words if we are to achieve truly effective communication.

Page 136: New Horizon College English

Learning Idioms

• Sometimes we can try to understand idiomatic expressions in a reading passage through context clues.

• But most often it does not work. Idioms contain a lot of cultural elements. So we have to expose us to more reading and listening to English songs and watching English movies can help us a lot understanding idioms as well as understanding more cultural matters.

Human beings are peculiar. We have spontaneous feelings and thoughts towards our family, mates and even considerable things in our life. We may be cheerful or depressed, sympathized or restrained, or even deeply hurt. So, we must learn to respect others’ feelings, including sharing happiness with others and avoiding hurting others. If we all treat each other fairly and in civilized ways, our world is likely to be filled with pleasure.

Paragraph Writing

Order in Narration (time sequence)

Good order in narration can make a paragraph logical and effective. You may present series of actions in exactly the order in which they occurred, moving from beginning to the end, from first event to last.

Page 191: New Horizon College English

Sample paragraph (paras.18~19 unit 6)• One evening her husband had fallen asleep whil

e reading a spy novel. She wrote a note on the envelope and left it on his book: “ Husband, I have gone next door to help Mrs. Norton with her sick children. ”

• The next morning she saw he had written below her message: “Wife, I missed you. You thought I was asleep, but I was just resting my eyes and thinking about that peculiar woman who talked to us in a church a long time ago. It has always seemed to me that she was the wrong shape for a heavenly messenger. Anyway, it’s time to stop wondering whether she came from heaven or a nearby town. What matters is this: whoever she was, Aunt Esther Gubbins was right.”

Page 192: New Horizon College English

Sample paragraph (para.5 unit 2)• Sandy walked into the bathroom and

turned on the shower. At first, the water felt cold. It helped her wake up. Then, as the water got hotter, she thought, “ This shower feels great and in here I can be alone and sing. No one disturbs me in here. ” She grabbed the soap and washed thoroughly, including her hair. If she stayed in the shower too long, her mom or dad usually banged on the door to rush her so she grabbed a towel and dried off.

Page 193: New Horizon College English

Please find out the time markers from the two sample paragraphs above.

• One evening, the next morning, and , at first, then

• Could you think of some frequently-used time markers?

• 1)      before, prior to, after, when, while, until• 2)      first, then, next, finally• 3)      the first thing, the second thing, …, the last thing.• 4)      firstly, secondly, thirdly, …, finally• 5) last year (month, week, day, minute, moment), • 6) the next morning (afternoon, evening), the

following • day, etc.•  7) later, at the same

time(meanwhile)immediately(soon),

Page 194: New Horizon College English

Now write one short paragraph with a set of actions organized according to the order of their sequence. Use time signals whenever possible. The topic has a detailed

outline that you can follow. • Topic : How to take good notes ?• Detail outlined: Before the lecture begins: make

some preparation for the lecture, be more likely to predict the organization of the lecture.

have a proper attitude. Be prepared to be open-minded to what the lecturer may say even though you may disagree with it.

During the lecture : Be brief in your note taking,Summarize your notes in your own words, not the instructor's. At the end of the lecture, ask questions about points you did not understand.

After the lecture: revise your notes quickly, immediately after the lecture since at that time you will still remember the lecture.

Page 195: New Horizon College English

Sample paragraph: • Freshmen tend to ask how to take good notes

in their studies. Here are some tips. Before the lecture begins: make some preparation for the lecture so that you will be more likely to predict the organization of the lecture. And then have a proper attitude: be prepared to be open-minded to what the lecturer may say even though you may disagree with it. During the lecture: be brief in your note taking, summarizing your notes in your own words, not the instructor's. At the end of the lecture, ask questions about points you did not understand. After the lecture: revise your notes as soon as possible, preferably immediately after the lecture since at that time you will still remember a good deal of the lecture.
