WHAT WILL MY NEW CLASSROOM BELIKE?

The best word to describe the classrooms in the new NNHS isflextech flexible technology which does not intrude on thetraditional feel of a classroom; technology which is easy to integrateinto your teaching based on the learning styles of each of your classes.

The information below applies to virtually every classroom in theschool - core classrooms, science labs, SPED resource rooms, Careerand Tech Ed, Health and Wellness, Fine and Performing Arts, ELL,EDCO, and all computer labs.

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF MY NEWCLASSROOM?

The Ceiling-Mounted Projector with ceiling-mounted twin speakerswill allow you to include audiovisual presentations whenever they areappropriate, whether its a 5-minute video clip or a feature-lengthmovie. No more mobile A/V carts being wheeled through congestedhallways.

Presentations can be made using your table-top Media Player (DVD,VCR, Cable TV) or your MacBooklaptop computer (web sites, powerpoint slide shows, curriculum-related software, etc.).

A black border around the center 7-ft section of the front 16-ft whitemarkerboard delineates your Polyvision enoInteractiveWhiteboard -- one board which can be used in many ways (eno isone spelled backwards):

Write on it with a standard dry-erase marker (since its ceramic-coated steel, you can use magnetic arrows and other colorful magneticicons for special emphasis).

Project an audiovisual presentation onto it (just wipe it clean first

with your markerboard eraser or a dry white paper towel or cloth).

Use its Wireless Stylus to control a computer presentation directlyon the board, without having to walk back and forth to your MacBook.Annotate on top of your presentation with a palette of drawing toolsand then save the entire lesson to your MacBook or to a web page.

that will be available for your MacBook. The NPS IT Department willprovide training.

HOW DOES ALL OF THIS WORK?

Input jacks on the front wall connect the various devices to theprojector. The Media Player should always remain connected, both tothe A/V jacks and to the Cable-TV jack. You can plug in your MacBooklaptop whenever you wish, using the additional audio and video cablessecured to your Media Worktable.

Every classroom has a Wireless Access Point installed above theceiling, so it is not necessary to plug your laptop into the data jack onthe front wall to access the NPS network or the internet. However, a

wired data drop will always give you up to 10 times as muchbandwidth as wireless access. NNHS will be the first school in the cityserved by a 10-gigabit backbone, with 1-gigabit service to each datajack.

If your laptop battery is not sufficiently charged, electrical outlets areavailable next to the Data and Cable-TV jacks.

HOW DO I CONTROL THE EQUIPMENT?

The Media Controller panel on the front wall allows you to: turn theprojector ON or OFF, select either the Media Player or your MacBook asthe input source, and adjust the volume of the Media Player (the

laptops volume is controlled directly from the laptop as usual).

You will not need a hand-held remote to control the projector, but theMedia Players remote will be useful for certain DVD/VCR/TV functions,so you should keep it in a safe place.

    WHAT ABOUT SECURITY?

The ceiling-mounted projector is protected by a sonic alarm

(extremely loud). Any attempt to disturb or remove the projector willactivate it. If you have any projector problems, you should contact Philor Chris. The schools Classroom A/V contract will provide you with areplacement projector within 24 to 48 hours.

The Polyvision eno board contains no electronic components. All ofthe electronics are built into the wireless bluetooth stylus, which will bepaired electronically with your MacBook. The stylus assigned to youwill therefore only work with your laptop (on any eno board in theschool). Since the stylus is expensive to replace, you should keep itwith your MacBook in the new Laptop Carrying Case that will be

provided. Never leave your laptop or your stylus unattended in aclassroom (even a locked classroom).

The Media Player will be chained to the worktable with a security kit.

    ANY TIPS FOR SIMPLE MAINTENANCE?

In addition to your eraser, you may want to keep a roll of papertowels or a soft white cloth handy to clean the eno board.

Expo dry erase marker cleaner can be used periodically for a morethorough cleaning of the eno board and the markerboards. Afterwards, wipe off your eno board with plain water to remove any film residue.Never use any other chemicals.

Never use permanent markers on any of your boards. (If this shouldever happen, see Phil or Chris immediately).

The eno stylus is powered by a single AAA battery. Place the capover the stylus tip when its not in use to conserve the battery. Whenyou remove the cap, the stylus will re-establish its bluetooth link to

your MacBook (this takes a few seconds).

You will probably want to keep a spare AAA battery in your laptopcarrying case. The eno software will warn you when the batterycharge is getting low. (Note: lithium batteries will last much longerthan standard alkaline batteries.)

Turn off your projector when its not in use. The projector lamps arerated for 2000 hours (about two full school years if used continuously),but are expensive to replace.

    WHATS NEXT?

As the budget permits, document cameras will be added to manyNNHS classrooms. These devices are the 21st century replacements fortraditional overhead projectors. Documents (or other objects) placedunder the camera can be projected onto the board and the images canbe saved directly to your MacBook.
