WELCOME TO OUR TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS EVENT

If you are an attendee/delegate you are probably here because you already have a ‘leaning’ in this direction as a future career or you may be undecided, whichever is the case do keep an openmind and take full advantage of the presentations, help, advice available and use the event to build/develop your network not only with the exhibitors, but also fellow attendees, a good network will prove to be extremely valuable in the future.

If you are an exhibitor, you may be here for a number of different business reasons, but to me you offer a variety to our target audience, whether it be immediate/future employment, training opportunities and/or advice on careers in Transport and Logistics; I ask you to take time and make the effort to engage with as many attendees as possible,

footfall will be relatively small at this event compared with other events that we run, but the potential reach, through today’s attendees may well be considerable, many will already have networks and can help you market your organisations services and/or opportunities further, but this will largely depend on the way you conduct and sell yourselves to attendees today. Additionally, BFRS will use the event and your attendance/contribution to reach those that could not be at the event today through ongoing marketing. Finally, thank you all for coming and remember resettlement/transition is a process and the event today is just part of that process, your experience today, whether attendee or exhibitor is important to us, so can I ask you all to let us have your constructive feedback at the end of the day.

Welcome to the BFRS Transport and Logistics Awareness and Careers Event, this is the first of our Sector Specific events and will help us to shape such event formats for the future, so please let us have your feedback at the end of the day.

Now is a great time to join one of the UKs fastest growing sectors. With Warehousing and Logistics becoming a mainstay of British industry over the last 20 years and key multi-national corporations choosing to base their European operations right here in the Britain. Now there is a genuine shortage of qualified drivers and an extreme shortage of young drivers looking for a second career.

If you have served in the Armed Forces then the answer is most probably yes. But it’s not only the RLC and specialists that hold desirable UK licences. In today’s modern forces every recruit leaving phase two will hold a full UK driving licence at a minimum, and with the Logistics and Transport industries booming, more and more service personnel are making this their first choice after life in the forces.

Elaine Harris from A E driver training said,

“There’s currently a major shortage of Category C + E drivers here in the UK, while at the same time the ever increasing popularity of internet retailing has meant there is greater demand for drivers than ever before.”

10 | Transport & Logistics 2016 Careers Event www.bfrss.org.uk

Page 11: New Challenge | New Beginnings: Transport & Logistics

With over 25,000 drivers expected to retire within the next few years there is a need for young, experienced and enthusiastic men and women to continue to support the ever growing logistics network in the UK.

As a member of the forces you already possess a wide variety of desirable skills for this industry and these jobs are not just for tankies and drivers from the RLC.

Have you also considered the possibility of travel within the driving sector, here at BFRS we recently had a meeting with one of the UKs leading prestige car transporters which

have contracts that include several weeks away in Europe at a time, with great travel opportunities, exceptional pay rates and a whole host of benefits why wouldn’t you want to get paid to drive?

Forces members have an adventurous heart so why not put that to use and spend every day at work somewhere different, either

travelling the length of the UK or crossing the continent, driving opportunities offer a host of attractive potential for service leavers.

As well as the practical skills of driving vehicles there are other avenues of employment in this extremely varied sector. The logistics world requires skilled managers and co-ordinators to ensure the smooth running of operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Service personnel are no stranger to the demands of logistics, whether it being delivering combat supplies on operations or the day to day administration at unit level, all ranks across the Tri-Services have experience in these areas.

Warehouse managers are required to ensure the smooth transition of products from the picking staff in the warehouse, to the loading bay and out the doors to their intended destinations. In between managers and drivers are a whole host of jobs that are suited to service leavers these can include – Despatch Co-ordinators, whose role it is to keep all records and documentation for the vehicles and also make sure the correct load is in the correct place at the correct time. Staff co-ordinators liaise between management and the shop floor making sure the team are being as productive as possible and sticking to strict deadlines to ensure products are out the doors and arriving with the customers when requested.

This is just a small insight into the kind of roles available in the logistics sector, behind the scenes are a whole host of opportunities for military personnel and with a keen eye for detail, punctuality, flexibility and team work skills Ex-forces personnel make ideal employees for this fast paced no-nonsense industry. So whether you be a Royal Navy officer, RLC driver, Air Force Load Sgt or an Infantry Gunslinger the logistics world is waiting to hear from you.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is the UK’s oldest transport trade body with more than 125 years of experience and expertise in the logistics sector.

FTA has more than 15,000 members across all modes of transport – road, rail, sea and air – and offers them compliance advice, training and technical information plus representation and influence at all government levels in the UK and Europe.

Skills shortages in the logistics sector have been a key focus for the Association in recent years. There is currently a shortfall of around 45,000 HGV drivers in the UK and operators also report problems recruiting engineers and technicians. Last year FTA staged a Driver Crisis Summit at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to address the issue and this was followed last month by a national Skills Summit that explored shortages across the industry as a whole.

The event explored solutions to the problem including apprenticeships, inspiring young people, improving the image of the industry to make it more aspirational and engaging with retired service personnel. FTA was instrumental in getting Government approval earlier this year for an HGV driver Trailblazer apprenticeship and is partnering Think Logistics – an industry-led initiative involving experts visiting schools and colleges to make young people aged 16 to 19 aware of the opportunities available to them in the logistics sector. FTA has also taken on three engineering apprentices who will be based at Gist depots across the country and will become FTA Vehicle Inspection Engineers when they complete their training.

In the UK 2.3 million people work in logistics – that’s one in 12. The average age of an

HGV driver is 51 and over the next five years the industry will need around 450,000 new people so the opportunities are immense in everything from driving to warehousing and engineering. As well as raising the profile of logistics and trying to help find a solution to the skills shortage, FTA provides training courses for those joining the industry and those already working in the sector.

These include courses for workshop engineering managers, irtec licences, Driver CPC, and many other areas of compliance and technical training. For more information see www.fta.co.uk/training, contact [email protected] or call 03717 112222.

Our reputation is founded on the quality and enthusiasm of our teams and that’s what sets us apart from our competitors.
