FOUNDERSWEEK INSPIRESSTUDENTSEach year, the campus community honors Spiritan Congregationfounding fathers Claude Poullart des Places, C.S.Sp., and theVenerable Francis Libermann, C.S.Sp., during Founders Week. This year’s celebration, held Jan. 28 through Feb. 2, includedMasses, a prayer service, and several luncheon presentations forstudents, designed to deepen their level of knowledge of thedifferent aspects of the Spiritan charism and history.

Students were askedto describe how the Spiritan charism impacted their views onsocial justice and peace issues, both in and out of the classroom. The winning entries were an essay by senior Tess Madden and apoem by freshman Eden Antalik.

Madden, a history major, described how “the academic, serviceand social opportunities at Duquesne have raised my conscious-ness of the world, transformed my approach to service and socialaction, and enriched my understanding of how the Holy Spirit ispresent in my life.”

Antalik, who is majoring in international business and politicalscience, wrote a poem that applied Spiritan values of peace, prayer and unity to the very contemporary issues of violence andinjustice that were associated with September’s campus shootingincident. She wrote:

“. . .Together, together. We came and pushed away thedarkness and sin. We love, we share, we are foundationstogether and comfort can be found from education, fromwork, from friendship, from love, from Within. Within.”
