McDonough - Atkinson CC Units 4 – 6

• Plant Jack McDonough, a 315 acre site, is owned by Georgia Power, a unit of Southern Co., and is located on the north side of the Chattahoochee River.

• Plant Jack McDonough was originally built in the 1960’s to provide electricity to Atlanta. It was capable of producing about 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

• The Ga. Power site continuously uses water from the Chattahoochee for cooling equipment needs.

• Rapidly increasing load demand in the Atlanta area load center as well as environmental considerations and costs of environmental mitigation made constructing these new units much more viable than continuing to operate McDonough’s two coal-fired units with retro-fitted environmental controls.– Overall thermal efficiency could almost double compared

to units 1 & 2. – 95% reduction of nitrous oxides emissions. – 99% reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions. – Nearly 100% reduction of mercury emissions. – 50% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. – Improved response to load demand.

• The construction of units 4, 5 and 6 is well underway.

• Plant McDonough will have the fourth largest electric production capacity in the state when completed, and the second largest capacity owned by the Georgia Power system exceeded only by Plant Bowen.

• These will be designed as combined cycle “two on one” (viz., 2 gas on 1 steam turbine) units with gas turbines used as the prime mover operating on natural gas.

• Gas turbines will generate 254MW each

• The combined output for each block will be 840MW

• Total output of 2,520MW for Georgia’s future growth and development.

• Construction of a natural gas pipeline to the plant site from the Southern Natural Gas Pipeline tap point in Union City, Georgia
