womanFor her, there was never a doubt. She raised her hand in school, went out for the team, ran for Student Council. She worked hard, in school and after class. She stood out in college, and was recognized as someone you could trust. Leadership was in her DNA. When she came to the retail, consumer goods and services industry she had high hopes. She learned the ropes. Started a family and climbed the ladder. She wants to give it her all. She wants to make a difference, but she feels stuck. We are losing too many women. We are losing our most precious commodity: Talent.

challengeIn 14 short years, NEW has grown into one of the largest communities serving the retail, consumer goods and service industry, representing nearly 9,000 members, 750 companies, 102 corporate partners and 20 regions across the U.S. and Canada. We’ve put women’s leadership on the agenda. We’ve changed hearts and minds. We’ve advanced tens of thousands of individual leaders. But we’ve sent these women back to companies that haven’t changed. Women make up half the retail industry’s workforce but still comprise less than 1 in 5 corporate officers and 1 in 20 CEOs. It’s time for change.

visionIt’s time for a new workplace. One that’s less rigid and more flexible. Less authoritative and more collaborative. Less conformist and more diverse. More authentic and less impersonal. NEW is creating a new model for workplace transformation and a new movement for workplace change. We have a new mission: “To advance women, build business and transform the industry’s workplace through the power of our community.” And a bold new vision: “A workplace with no limits.”

The Network of Executive Women has many achievements to report for 2014. We set new records in membership, corporate partnership, regional event attendance, outreach and online engagement. Our national conferences were sold out. Volunteer participation soared. But our greatest achievement in 2014 was laying the groundwork for a new Network and a new Movement for women’s leadership and workplace change. We created a new mission and vision. We strengthened our infrastructure and expanded our staff. We created a Board-level Inclusion Committee. We redesigned our brand. And we expanded our learning programs to help you develop qualified women leaders. It’s time to move the needle on women’s leadership and create a better workplace for everyone.

NEW is ready. Let’s get started.

NEW has been a resource for me to connect to like-minded women interested in changing the face of corporate America. Whether it’s through the webinars or the NEW Executive Leaders Forum, I turn to the Network to learn how to be a better leader and how to run my business better. How has NEW helped your organization? My company has leveraged NEW for development training, mentoring and expanding the number of women in leadership positions. What’s it time for? It’s time for more women in leadership roles. I think it’s time for a different leadership style, one that’s more caring and sensitive, much more collaborative than directive. It’s time for much more diverse people and an inclusive culture to drive the bottom line.

Angela Joyner Vice President, General Manager ConAgra Foods Co-chair, NEW Chicago

NEW has helped me show my teammates at Coca-Cola that I believe in them — not just the men but the women — and to provide a forum for the team and ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to grow. How has NEW helped your organization? NEW has provided an opportunity to create mentors [for our] mentoring program. A lot of the members of NEW are either mentors or mentees. NEW has been a great platform for Coca-Cola and shows the larger business community that we have been a leader on this front. I think it’s really exciting. What’s it time for? I think it’s time for men to step up. Men need to advocate for real change. I think it’s our time. I love being part of it because it’s showing men across the industry and my company that it’s time for us all to step up and be real advocates for change.

Luke Emery Vice President, Chicagoland Market Coca-Cola Refreshments The Coca-Cola Company

How has NEW helped you?

Network of Executive Women12

Page 13: Network of Executive Women Annual Report 2014

I am actually fairly new to NEW, but it’s been fantastic. The event that I attended was phenomenal. I was able to hear from a female leader about how to be more authentic and share your voice when presenting, and how to have that presence in front of your audience. Those are very relevant to the things that I do on a day-to-day basis at work. It was fantastic to not only hear the presentations from strong female leaders but also to network with other female leaders in the industry. How has NEW helped your organization? We have a good partnership with NEW. I know that we have senior leaders who are able to collaborate with NEW to help with the branding and the message that NEW is sharing. I think Pepsi is a great industry leader that helps NEW do this through plenty of PepsiCo members active in the NEW community. What’s it time for? I believe it’s time for us to think of this as a movement — not as a women’s movement, but as an everybody’s movement.

Preetha Balamohan Senior Manager, Sales Strategy PepsiCo Inc.

NEW has taught me to embrace and continuously challenge myself as a female leader, which in turn makes me a better contributor to my team. I’ve learned so much from the programs and resources that NEW has offered me as a member. How has NEW helped your organization? From thought-provoking NEW SmartBrief articles to the inspiring speakers at the NEW Leadership Summit, NEW’s resources energize our teams. Our representatives learn so much at every NEW Summit about how to be better leaders. As a development option, it is a standout. What’s it time for? I think it’s time that we stopped trying to “cover” or minimize leadership qualities that we consider more feminine and instead embrace them. Let them become the norm and let them become skills that people aspire to.

Page 14: Network of Executive Women Annual Report 2014

NEW has provided me with a sense of confidence, coming into an industry that I had no knowledge of. [It’s helped me] to make my own way, have my own voice and feel confident in the decisions I was making on behalf of a corporation. I have a network I can reach out to. How has NEW helped your organization? We are at the beginning of how NEW will help our company. It’s time now to engage NEW more strategically and we are offering NEW to every single woman at Kraft, so we will have this organization that women at Kraft can rely on for confidence building, for network building, for leadership building — that’s where we’re going to take it into the future. It’s going to be a game changer. What’s it time for? I think it’s time for the industry to not only have women in leadership positions, but to prove to women that the women in those positions have the power and influence to change these companies. To me, it’s more than just having a bunch of vice presidents, CEOs and CFOs, but to prove to everyone, including all the women looking up to them, that they’re actually the ones making the change.

Laura Harris Senior Director, Field Finance Kraft Foods Group

I had the opportunity to be the Ambassador to NEW and that really allowed me to learn about the Network in a way I hadn’t in the past. I felt a great connectivity with NEW and I learned about the Network’s core values, what the agenda was and what NEW wants to accomplish strategically. This role taught me about the Network and all the assets that come along with it. How has NEW helped your organization? NEW is part of our Balance 4Performance team and efforts, making the employee base aware of the partnership and all that NEW can provide, from the NEW Leadership Summit, NEW Executive Leaders Forum and NEW Leadership Academy, to other resources. What’s it time for? I was given the opportunity by Nestlé Waters to go through a Center for Creative Leadership training program. To see NEW collaborating with such a fine organization that really focuses on elevating women’s skill sets, their positioning, their behaviors — it’s really game changing. The Network is providing companies with this highly professional skill development that can be applied and recognized within each company as true development.

NEW has helped me a great deal, meeting with women in different industries and being able to craft my own style as I practice networking at group events, travel to the conferences and gain exposure to executive women at the highest rank of their organizations. Seeing what people are doing at other companies and using those lessons learned has been an opportunity to grow and propel my career forward. How has NEW helped your organization? NEW has been significant to all of our team members. We have our memberships and partnerships through our regional diversity council members and through the corporate offices. NEW is a great opportunity for our internal team members to network with one another and share their best practices. What’s it time for? It’s time to have males more involved with the development of women by being supportive, lending a listening ear and providing the support that’s needed for development.

Stephanie Johnson Manager, Diversity Strategic Partner Development Diversity & Inclusion (Center of Expertise) Walgreen Company

NEW has allowed me the opportunity to further enhance my professional network while providing growth and development opportunities provided through the learning programs and national events offered. How has NEW helped your organization? NEW has provided a platform focused on the development of women in CPG without boundaries and limitations, providing a learning and leadership community for our associates. What’s it time for? Women account for 85 percent of all consumer purchases, including everything from autos to health care; it’s time for the industry to invest more in the growth and development of women.

Page 16: Network of Executive Women Annual Report 2014

In 2001 a small group of industry leaders formed the Network of Executive Women. Their goal: Increasing leadership opportunities for women in the retail and consumer goods industry. By the end of 2014, the Network had grown into a powerful community of nearly 9,000 members, 737 companies, 102 partner companies and 20 regions across North America. Most astonishing: More than a thousand NEW members served as an officer, volunteer, Champion or Ambassador in 2014. Our community is always expanding and ever changing: In 2014, the Network created a Board-level Inclusion Committee with NEW Executive Committee Member Ken Charles of General Mills as its chair. Its mission: Increase Network diversity and ensure every voice is heard.

NEW is one of the industry’s largest membership organizations. Nearly 5,600 industry members have joined our diverse community in the past five years — an increase of nearly 170 percent.

partners for a record 102 companies. National and regional partner support

increased more than 7 percent to more than $3 million, another record. Our

partners represent the industry’s largest companies and the world’s biggest brands

in 2014 — 86 percent of our membership. Our partners sponsored national and

regional events, appeared as keynotes and panelists, served as leaders,

welcomed us at their companies and championed NEW throughout the

They produced learning events, hosted mixers, enlisted new members, enrolled regional sponsors and reached out to their communities. They conducted their own promotion, publicity and social media. And they contributed more than $880,000 in Network revenue. NEW regional groups are a proving ground for new ideas and a training ground for emerging leaders. There’s no greater endorsement of the Network than this: More than 1,000 NEW members — from emerging leaders to c-suite officers — served the Network as a national or regional leader, Champion or Ambassador in 2014. NEW regions accounted for 931 of our volunteers, an unprecedented one-year increase of 40 percent.
