He emphasised that training is about patient safety.

Development of a Vocational Training Foundation Programme for Pharmacy Technicians

Val Findlay, NES, and Arlene Turnbull, NHS Forth Valley/NES

Val Findlay and Arlene Turnbull provided an overview on the development of a Vocational Training Foundation Programme for Pharmacy Technicians in Scotland; including the development, pilot and evaluation of a Foundation Framework for General Practice pharmacy technicians, and plans for further development in community and hospital pharmacy.

Delegates were able to discuss their thoughts on the transferability of core competencies across sectors and the requirement for role specific competencies for each sector. They also shared their thoughts for an assessment strategy for the programme.

of experiential learning. Heather Harrison set the scene by describing the progress made since the last conference. Further presentations from the two Schools of Pharmacy and NES described the experiential opportunities currently available to undergraduate students, pre-registration trainees and foundation pharmacists, including the challenges for assuring consistency and quality.

Delegates were invited to share their thoughts on what we should continue to do, what we should stop doing and what we could do differently to enhance experiential learning in Scotland. All thoughts were transcribed and will be reported back when available. These considerations will be fed into the advisory groups for the Five-Year workstream.

Development of experiential learning in Scotland

Dr Ailsa Power, Heather Harrison, Gail Craig, Fiona McMillan, NES; Dr Anne Boyter, University of Strathclyde (UoS); Alyson Brown, RGU

The aim of this workshop was to update delegates on the progress of developing experiential learning in pharmacy education, particularly in the FIve-year programme for early years. The workshop had a particular focus on quality management

Pharmacy Teams Working in General Practice - interim review of the national evaluation

Delegates also contributed to education and training requirements for part of the workforce, employed via Primary Care Funds and completing the NES Learning Pathway, in relation to initial education and training needs on employment as well as their medium - long term educational needs following attendance at the series of NES national bootcamps. Over 60 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians attended this session which was very well received.

GPhC: What’s new in relation to education

Evelyn McPhail, NHS Fife and GPhC Council member; Lynsey Cleland, Osama Ammar, Juliette Becuwe, GPhC

Lynsey Cleland, Director for Scotland (GPhC) provided an overview of the regulatory activity that has a focus on education and training, followed by Osama Ammar, Head of Revalidation, who provided an overview of Revalidation. Juliette Becuwe, Policy Officer, described the current consultation on standards for pharmacist independent prescribing.

Delegates were able to discuss and contribute to this consultation, with much of the discussion focussed on the current course entry requirement for two year’s post-registration experience, and a suggested move to non-medical prescribing practitioners to supervise training, rather than a medical practitioner for each student.
