8.2- Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE): NDE is a term that is often used interchangeably with NDT.However, technically, NDE is used to describe measurements that are more quantitative in nature. Forexample, a NDE j method would not only locate a defect, but it would also be used to measuresomething about that defect such as its size, shape, and orientation, as well as its effect to theremaining life of structures and components. may be used to determine material properties suchas fracture toughness, formability, and other physical characteristics.

8.3- NDT Methods: R d b . . . . I . -3 as well --t- . . " 0th

-here are six NDT methods that ds are briefly described below:

8.3.1-Visual inspection or testing (VT): VT is still a basic method for many applications. Visual inspection involves using an inspector's eyes to look for defects. The inspector may also use specialtools such as magnifiing glasses, mirrors, or bore scopes to gain access and more closely inspect the subject area, Visual examiners follow proced res that range om simple tovery complex. wrJ~c 4-7 -tW 4 Ffi 9*?.rx xJffl"L . ctra-%k hu-?.

t 8.3.2- Liquid penetrates testing (PT): )r0 c a r ~ u * ?

Test objects are coated with visible or fluorescent dye solution. Excess dye is then removed from the surface, and a developer is applied. The developer acts as blotter, drawing trapped penetrateout of imperfections open to the surface. With visible dyes, vivid cdor contrasts between the penetrate and developer make bleed- out easy to see. With horescent dyes, allowing imperfections to be readily seen.

8.3.3- Magnetic particle testing (MT): This NDT method is accomplished by inducing a magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material and then dusting the surface with iron particles (either dry or suspended in liquid). Surface and near- surfaceimperfections distort the magnetic field and previewing a visual indication of the flaw.

8.3.4- Electromagnetic or Eddy Current testing (ET): Electrical current is generated in a conductive material by an induced alternating magnetic field. The electrical current is called eddy current because it flows in circles at and just below the surface ofthe material. Interruptions in the flow of eddy currents, caused by imperfections or changes in the materials conductive and

8.3.5- Radiography testing (RT): Radiography (or and products for imperfections. An X ray generator or radioisotope sealed source i s used as a source of radiation. Radiation is directed through a part and onto film or other imaging media. The resulting shadowgraph shows the dimensional features of the part. Possible imperfections are indicated as density changes on the film

8.3.6- Ultrasonic testing (UT): Ultrasonic testing uses transmission of high-frequency sound waves into a material to detect

imperfections or to locate changes in material properties. The most commonly used ultrasonic testing technique is pulse echo, wherein sound is introduced into a test object and reflections (echoes) are returned to f a receiver from internal imperfections or from the part's geometrical surfaces.
