Welcome to the second half of our celebration of 25 years as choreographers with NDT. Last month was an evening created for NDT2, and now it’s the turn of NDT1 with our full evening work of Sehnsucht/Schmetterling.This journey began in 2009 when we made Sehnsucht. A study of the usage of two highly contrasting spaces to emote differing aspects of how we human souls, as individuals and groups, relate to each other: From isolation and limitation, to passion and emancipation through dance inspired by the music of the formidable father of classical music Ludwig Van Beethoven. In 2010, we completed the triptych of Sehnsucht as well as creating Schmetterling to form a journey which encircled itself as we explored the realms of transformational qualities of life, nature, and one of the most intense relationships of all: That of parent and child. The evening became instantly a vital and important work to the company as it played with many elements to take you, the audience, through a myriad of emotions, from the poetic and physically driven, to the absurd and lamentful.This is the first time since its premiere four years ago that we are bringing it home to present it in our home stage in Den Haag and in Amsterdam.Since its creation Sehnsucht/Schmetterling has been touring internationally from New York and Saint Petersburg, to London and San Francisco to name but a few. Naturally the work has evolved immensely in the hands of the magnificent artists of NDT1, along with the deeper exploration of the work by us both. It is with great pride and the desire to share this journey with you all in its matured state. We hope that its many messages and images will help inspire you all to embrace this mad and beautiful world we live in through the art of dance.

Schmetterling (2010)

SOL LEÓN &PAUL LIGHTFOOT

Na de Nationale Ballet Academie in Madrid voegde Sol León zich bij NDT 2 in 1987. Na twee jaar stroomde ze door naar NDT 1 waar ze in meesterwerken danste van Jir i Kylián, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek en Ohad Naharin. Ze bleef tot 2003 actief als danseres om zich volledig toe te wijden aan het choreograferen. In 2012 werd León artistiek adviseur bij NDT.

Paul Lightfoot studeerde aan de Koninklijke Ballet school (The Royal Ballet School) in Londen. Hij danste twee jaar bij NDT 2 en vervolgens tot 2008 bij NDT 1. Tijdens zijn danscarrière begon Lightfoot te choreograferen en samen met Sol León creëerde hij vele werken voor beide gezelschappen. Lightfoot werd in 2011 benoemd tot artistiek directeur van Nederlands Dans Theater.

In het seizoen 2014-2015 zal Sehnsucht, Schmetterling, Shoot the Moon, Stop-Motion en Spiritwalking van León & Lightfoot worden opgevoerd in Athene, Luxemburg, Moscow, Stuttgart en Madrid. NDT 2 brengt Shutters Shut, Subject to Change en Sad Case ten tonele in onder andere Moscow, New York, Portland, Budapest en Wiesbaden.

SOL LEÓN & PAUL LIGHTFOOT

Sol León joined NDT 2 after graduating from the National Ballet Academy of Madrid in 1987. Two years later she joined NDT 1 and danced masterpieces of Jir í Kylián, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek en Ohad Naharin. She continued to dance up until 2003, when she decided to fully devote herself to choreography. León became artistic advisor for NDT in 2012.

Paul Lightfoot studied at the Royal Ballet School in London. He joined NDT 2 and moved to NDT 1 two years later, where he danced until 2008. During his dancing career, Lightfoot started choreographing and together with Sol León created many pieces for both companies at NDT. Lightfoot became artistic director of NDT in 2011.

In season 2014-2015 Sehnsucht, Schmetterling, Shoot the Moon, Stop-Motion and Spiritwalking by León & Lightfoot will be performed in Athens, Luxemburg, Moscow, Stuttgart and Madrid. NDT 2 will dance Shutters Shut, Subject to Change and Sad Case in Moscow, New York, Portland, Budapest and Wiesbaden, among others.

SEHNSUCHT/SCHMETTERLING

Voor Sehnsucht (2009) en Schmetterling (2010) lieten Sol León en Paul Lightfoot zich onder andere inspireren door de Duitse taal. “Schmetterling” betekent vlinder. “Sehnsucht” is daarentegen moeilijker te vertalen. Het begrip raakt echter aan een bepaald verlangen, en beschrijft een diepe emotionele staat van intens gemis.

Sol León en Paul Lightfoot were, among other things, inspired by the German language in their creation of Sehnsucht (2009) and Schmetterling (2010). ‘Schmetterling’ is German for butterfly. ‘Sehnsucht’ however, is more difficult to translate adequately. The word connects to a certain yearning, and describes a deep emotional state of missing something intensely.

Wat fijn dat we u vanavond hebben mogen verwelkomen. Ik hoop dat u genoten heeft van onze virtuoze NDT 1 dansers in deze betekenisvolle balletten Sehnsucht/Schmetterling. Bij NDT staat creativiteit voorop en benadrukken we het tonen van nieuwe creaties. Sinds vijf jaar worden beide balletten met name in het buitenland opgevoerd en kennen daardoor grote internationale bekendheid. De investering die destijds gemaakt is om het ballet te produceren is inmiddels ruimschoots terugverdiend. En we gaan door, in juni staat Sehnsucht/Schmetterling in Teatro Real in Madrid.

We maken er zaak van om naast een prominente aanwezigheid in de Nederlandse danswereld, ook een groot internationaal bereik te bewerkstelligen. Zo gaat NDT 2 - het jongerengezelschap waarin dansers worden klaargestoomd om het niveau te bereiken dat u vanavond heeft mogen aanschouwen - binnenkort op tournee door de Verenigde Staten en komt NDT 1 net terug van een succesvolle tour door China.

Uw aanwezigheid en steun is van essentieel belang. Daarmee laat u zien dat u, net als ons, ook gelooft in de waarde van kunst en de verbeeldingskracht van dans. Het is een kunstvorm die plaatsheeft in het moment en zoals vanavond in dit theater, een collectieve ervaring teweegbrengt die naast de muziek en de beweging een derde dimensie ontlokt. Nederlands Dans Theater wil niets liever dan dat op wereldniveau voor u te blijven doen en u van belevingen te voorzien die u onvergetelijke herinneringen bezorgen.

Both ballets have been performed multiple times abroad, ever since their creation five years ago. The investment and costs made in the production of both works have been amply recovered since then. And we keep going, with upcoming scheduled performances for Sehnsucht/Schmetterling in Teatro Real in Madrid.

For us, your presence and support is essential. It shows that you, just like us, believe in the value of art and the imagination of dance. It is an art form that takes place in the moment and triggers a collective experience that besides the music and the movement elicits a third dimension. NDT wants nothing more than to continue to do that on a global level and to provide you with experiences that leave you with unforgettable memories.

BINNENKORT BIJ MOVE IN

Open Studio | zaterdag 31 januari 2015Professionele dansers (in opleiding) duiken tijdens Open Studio samen met één van onze dansers de studio in om aan de slag te gaan met het repertoire van onze choreografen. Zo maken ze kennis met onze werkwijze, het repertoire en de verschillende danstalen die NDT rijk is.

Kids Day | zondag 8 februari 2015Neem je broertjes, zusjes, neefjes, nichtjes, vriendjes en vriendinnetjes mee voor een dag vol leuke dansactiviteiten bij NDT! Op 8 februari kun je tijdens de tweede Kids Day van dit seizoen van alles leren over ons dansgezelschap. Bijvoorbeeld hoe het is om zelf een danser te zijn of welke andere beroepen er zijn bij NDT. Voor kinderen van 5-12 jaar.

Inleiding bij iedere première Samen met onze inleider gaat u in gesprek over het repertoire, de choreografen, de thematiek en het creatieproces van een programma. Zo komt u meer te weten over de voorstelling en maakt u persoonlijk kennis met ons gezelschap. Op vertoon van uw toegangskaart kunt u de inleiding gratis bijwonen. De inleidingen starten om 19.00 uur en duren een half uur.

Tijdens onze activiteiten maak je actief kennis met de choreografieën en de werkwijze van ons gezelschap. Ons uitgangspunt is steeds: met elkaar dans beleven, van elkaar leren en plezier maken.
