Today we join with our friends and neighbors to celebrate Newcastle’s 19th birthday. This year’s emphasis is about change. Development continues at a rapid pace with activities at Newcastle Vista, Boren Creek Townhomes, Lawrence Park, Cottington and Laurel Ridge.

We are anxiously awaiting the developments on the north end of the lake and the old brick plant site. The city staff is working with the owners and contractors to ensure these developments work well with our existing neighbor-hoods, while bringing new ameni-ties to our residents.

Activities at Newcastle Days are also changing. This year, we are introducing a “pay-for-play” area. There will be eight attractions and a $15 individual pass provides unlimited use. There will also be a “3-on-3” schoolyard basketball

tournament. Our Community Activities Commission is planning resident com-petitions in the center area of the park. There will still be pony rides, slides and bouncy house for the young ones; bands all afternoon; a beer and wine garden; exhibits by our volunteer organizations (Newcastle Historical Society, Newcastle Trails and Weed Warriors); food vendors; and a limited number of nonfood vendor tents.

Regency Newcastle and Waste Management are the prime spon-sors for this year’s event. Valley Medical, the Animal Hospital and The Golf Club at Newcastle are

Welcome to Newcastle Daysalso supporting Newcastle Days. Sponsorship from the business community is what enables the city to put on our series of summer events. Stop by and say hello.

The Community Activities Commission is working hard to make this year’s Newcastle Days about fun and community. Put together a neighborhood team and compete against other residents in the games they are planning.

Visit the Historical Society and find out how the early residents of Newcastle celebrated holidays when they lived in the second largest city in the state of Washington.

This year is about fun. So, do your best to enjoy yourself and remember how the past got us to where we are today — the 18th most livable small city in the United States.

Your Dreams, Our Strategies ®

Thanks once again goes to the citizens and volunteers from Newcastle who yearly support Newcastle Days and other city special events with enthusiasm and pride.

What’s different this year is the organizing committee is also the Community Activities Commission (the former Parks Commission), which took over the reins and led the charge.

The city offered much help through work of staff members to supplement the absence of a parks manager. Commission members are Angela Ursino, Linda Newing, Russ Segner, Jim Price, Craig Belcher, Jesse Tang and myself. Mayor Rich Crispo (co-chairman) worked with us every step of the way in the planning of this annual event.

Thanks also go to the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, our spon-sors, of course, Councilman John Dulcich, Newcastle Trails and Historical Society members, and all those who offered wisdom and wished us well.

And now, enjoy 2013 Newcastle Days.

Whitewww.whitemusic.net

Since bursting onto the world stage with John Lennon in the Plastic Ono Band at the “Give Peace a Chance” tour in Toronto, Alan White has developed a reputation as a musical innova-tor, both in his role as drummer for Yes, and as a collaborator with the likes of George Harrison and Joe Cocker.

As an important contributing songwriter, Alan has helped take Yes to great heights with radio hits such as “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Changes,” “Love Will Find a Way,” “Rhythm of Love,” “Wondrous Stories,” “Tempus Fugit,” “Leave It,” “The Calling” and “In the Presence Of.”

His latest musical project is the group White, a vehicle for cutting-edge, progressive mod-ern music performed with a world-class band.

Enjoy some blues with that rockRicky Venture Revuewww.facebook.com/Ricky.Venture.Revue

The Ricky Venture Revue, performing since 2005, pres-ents Katy Gaga.

The band performs a variety of dance music from the ’60s to today — hits from artists such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Adele, Carly Rae Jepsen, Ke$ha, Pink and Avril Lavigne. Their fans love dancing to the music of today’s divas, so a tribute borrowing names from two of their favorites was created.

Founder Ricky Venture, bassist Larry McCann and drum-mer Roy Adler are all established, experienced musicians who grew up in another era but love today’s music, so it was a natural progression for them to launch Katy Gaga.

The Ricky Venture Revue plays dance music with a sound and lighting experience that patrons, dancers and owners enjoy. Vegas-caliber entertainment at a great value, that’s the RVR promise.

Seatown Rhythm and Blues Playerswww.seatownrhythmandblues.com

The Seatown Rhythm and Blues Players cover the hits with great energy and an enjoyable sound with a soulful flavor.

Performing songs from artists such as The Gap Band; Barry White; George Benson; Marvin Gaye; Earth, Wind & Fire; Kool & The Gang; Maze; Teddy Pendergrass; Commodores; Tyrone Davis; and James Brown, this four-piece unit can get the groove started wherever they are.

Its members have performed all across the country and the Pacific Northwest, covering a broad range of danceable hits familiar to all ages.

Q: What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Q: Would your child benefit from a specialist?

A: A dentist who has trained two or more years beyond dental school in the particular oral health care of children from infancy through the teenage years.

A: Of course! Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry.

Our focus is prevention, early detection, and treatment of dental disease. Combining expertise and kindness, with a bit of illusion, Dr. McDonald provides a positive and caring approach to dentistry for your child.

Hairstormwww.hairstormrocks.com

Hairstorm, Seattle’s premier ’80s hair rock tribute band, recre-ates the experience of the mid-’80s hair-rock scene with powerful and highly melodic performances, full with outfits and stage show from a time in rock where men looked like women and the women looked like even hotter women.

The band performs classic hard rock from the never-forgotten ’80s. Come for the sights and sounds of Van Halen, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Whitesnake, Guns N’ Roses and more!

Vocalist Robyn Dawn provides soulful, touching vocals; Steve Boyce holds down the bottom end with a dance-inducing groove and soaring vocal support; Karl Haug truly is a master guitarist, equally comfortable on delicate acoustic, driving electric and searing elec-tric laptop slide; and Jonathan Sindelman, ties the resulting soundscape together with punchy keyboard work, exhilarating orches-trations, and scorching solos.

Steeped in sonic variety, White evokes an emotional response from its audience, and is certain to build a strong word-of-mouth buzz.

The Newcastle Historical Society invites Newcastle Days attendees to visit the display of early pioneer tools, such as a corn sheller, corn grinder, whetstone and water pump. Collector Mike Intekofer has a “what is it” table with a lot of antique kitchen, farm and mechanic’s tools that people can try to identify. Also on display will be small-scale farm-ing implements that would have been used in the Newcastle area, such as cultivators, corn planters, potato planters, seeders, etc.

Society board members look forward to discussing the city’s heritage, and Vickie Olson will lead tours of the historical cemetery.

The Newcastle Historical Society will display old photos in the meeting room of the Newcastle Library during September. Programs about Newcastle History will be presented. Russ Segner will present “The Coal Mines of Newcastle” Sept. 5; Rich Crispo will present “The Impact of Newcastle” Sept. 19; and Vickie Olson will pres-ent “Gone but Not Forgotten” Sept. 26.
