Australia’s nursing and midwifery labour force is growing with a new report showing there were 276,751 nurses employed in 2009, up 13 percent in four years.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2009 report found the supply of nurses grew 6.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 1040 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population to 1105 full-time equivalent nurses based on a 38-hour week.
The report found the increase was mostly the result of both a 13.3 percent increase in the number of employed nurses, and a 0.9 percent increase in the average hours they worked over that period.
It showed nursing continued to be a female dominated profession, with females comprising 90.4 percent of employed nurses in 2009, down slightly from 92.1 percent in 2005, while nurses worked 33.3 hours a week, a 0.3 percent increase on 2005.
The total number of nurses in 2009 was estimated to be 320,982, including 260,121 registered nurses and 60,861 enrolled nurses.
And the number of registered and enrolled nurses either working or seeking work increased 14.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 254,956 to 291,246.
The report showed the number of nurses working part-time decreased from 49.8 percent to 47.7 percent.
It also showed nursing supply across regions ranged from 997 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population in major cities to 1,240 in very remote areas.

Ten nurse practitioners and four eligible midwives will be employed at the first standalone NP-led clinic in Australia, opening at the end of September.
The SmartClinics facility, located at Queensland’s Chermside Westfield shopping centre, will be the first of its kind, delivering standalone primary healthcare from NPs and eligible midwives, with the support of a GP.
SmartClinics lead NP Julie Farrelly said patients at the clinic will have access to treatment for colds and flus, vaccinations, wound care, blood tests, repeat prescriptions and medical certificates, health checks, fracture assessment, pregnancy check-ups and more.
Ms Farrelly acquired her Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and completed her Masters Degree at the age of 40, then worked in a busy city emergency department as an NP candidate before becoming endorsed as an NP in 2007.
She then became the first NP employed at the Caboolture emergency department where she worked for three years before joining SmartClinics.
“I was led down the path towards becoming a Nurse Practitioner through my personal need to validate the advanced skills I had developed over many years of general nursing and midwifery,” she said.

The most incredible opportunity came when after a few months of working at various health care institutions throughout London working in specialities of Emergency, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Surgical I was offered a Block contract at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, where I was able to work alongside the best Paediatric Surgical Nurses and Doctors in the world, gaining invaluable experience and guidance to further grow and develop in my love and passion for Surgical and Trauma Paediatric Nursing. It truly was the best experience of my life, and to also work alongside my nursing mentor from years earlier was extremely fulfilling and amazing. I found my experience working with PULSE in the UK to be an invaluable part of my career development.
I could not have be more grateful for the assistance, guidance and opportunities I received from PULSE. Working and travelling in the UK was made easy and stress free, and for that I am forever thankful. Ten nurse practitioners and four eligible midwives will be employed at the first standalone NP-led clinic in Australia, opening at the end of September.
The SmartClinics facility, located at Queensland’s Chermside Westfield shopping centre, will be the first of its kind, delivering standalone primary healthcare from NPs and eligible midwives, with the support of a GP.
SmartClinics lead NP Julie Farrelly said patients at the clinic will have access to treatment for colds and flus, vaccinations, wound care, blood tests, repeat prescriptions and medical certificates, health checks, fracture assessment, pregnancy check-ups and more.
Ms Farrelly acquired her Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and completed her Masters Degree at the age of 40, then worked in a busy city emergency department as an NP candidate before becoming endorsed as an NP in 2007.
She then became the first NP employed at the Caboolture emergency department where she worked for three years before joining SmartClinics.
“I was led down the path towards becoming a Nurse Practitioner through my personal need to validate the advanced skills I had developed over many years of general nursing and midwifery,” she said.

Australia’s nursing and midwifery labour force is growing with a new report showing there were 276,751 nurses employed in 2009, up 13 percent in four years.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2009 report found the supply of nurses grew 6.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 1040 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population to 1105 full-time equivalent nurses based on a 38-hour week.
The report found the increase was mostly the result of both a 13.3 percent increase in the number of employed nurses, and a 0.9 percent increase in the average hours they worked over that period.
It showed nursing continued to be a female dominated profession, with females comprising 90.4 percent of employed nurses in 2009, down slightly from 92.1 percent in 2005, while nurses worked 33.3 hours a week, a 0.3 percent increase on 2005.
The total number of nurses in 2009 was estimated to be 320,982, including 260,121 registered nurses and 60,861 enrolled nurses.
And the number of registered and enrolled nurses either working or seeking work increased 14.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 254,956 to 291,246.
The report showed the number of nurses working part-time decreased from 49.8 percent to 47.7 percent.
It also showed nursing supply across regions ranged from 997 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population in major cities to 1,240 in very remote areas.

A mental health nurse has been sacked for expressing her view on mandatory detention and its effects on mental health.
International Health and Medical Services sacked the nurse, who had worked at a Darwin detention centre for two weeks, citing professional standard reasons but stating in a letter to the nurse that she had expressed “negative political opinions” on detention.
The move came as mental health nurses joined psychologists, psychiatrists and other industry experts to demand the Federal Government abandon the indefinite detention of asylum seekers.
It follows the release of Department of Immigration and Citizenship documents which reveal that 213 detainees were treated for self-inflicted injuries and 700 for voluntary starvation in the first six months of this year.
Department secretary Andrew Metcalfe presented the information during a Senate Inquiry into the system, which costs $772 million a year to maintain, questioning the government’s policy.
Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Adjunct Associate Professor Kim Ryan said she was outraged at the nurse’s sacking.
“The opinion this mental health nurse expressed is based on strong evidence showing that mandatory detention contributes to mental illness,” Professor Ryan said.
“Mental health nurses provide services to people in many difficult and unfortunate circumstances.
“Whether they work in a detention centre, a hospital or in the community, a mental health nurse has to look at their clients’ circumstances and consider how they impact on their mental health.
“The mandatory and indefinite detention of asylum seekers should be ceased in favour of less restrictive and more cost-effective community-based alternatives.”
Australian Psychological Society Adjunct Associate Professor Amanda Gordon said the length and uncertainty of refugee processing contributed to trauma, creating mental illness.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapist Karen Finnin launched the country’s first and only online personalised injury management business www.physios-online.com for areas without access to physios, after being inspired by the success of her private practice, Physiotherapy Timor, in Dili.
Karen ventured to Dili in 2007 to support her husband Dan Uden, also a physiotherapist, who was supplying physiotherapy services to members of the Australian Defence Force serving in Timor.
It was then Karen realised there was a need for access to good quality injury management for the thousands of non-Defence expat workers and locals living in Timor.
“My clientele were from the UN, the Australian Federal Police, volunteers and a vast array of development projects,” she said.
“Many were Australian but I saw people from all over the world.”
Karen said she treated up to 30 patients a week.
“Most of these people are very passionate about their jobs, so work long hours,” she said.
“Most are working on laptops, with whatever chairs and desks can be found. It will come as no surprise then, to discover that many of the ailments I saw related to spinal issues.
“There was also a collection of sports related injuries, and injuries from falls from motorbikes and tripping over the vast collection of potholes along Dili’s roads.

A Perth speech pathologist is working with teachers at a remote school in Western Australia to tackle the low literacy rates of Indigenous students.
Diana Rigg has helped turn around literacy levels at the Rawa Community School, part of the Punmu Community, located in the Great Sandy Desert area of the Pilabara, where she has been working for the past two years.
Speaking to highlight Speech Pathology Week, which celebrates the speech pathology profession from August 21-27, Ms Rigg said when she first began work at the school, the majority of its 70 students were assessed as non-readers.
“Now the whole school is reading and we’re looking at expanding the program to Rawa’s sister schools,” she said.
Speech Pathology Australia research shows Indigenous students in isolated areas have less books and computers at home while high absenteeism rates also contribute to a negative impact on the development of their English literacy skills.
More than half of Indigenous families living in very remote communities speak an Indigenous language in their home while more than 70 percent also suffer chronic serious middle ear diseases that can cause permanent hearing loss and inhibit language and literacy development.
Ms Rigg said Rawa students were shown how to focus on oral language and the sounds that make up words, which taught them how to hear the different sounds in words and how these sounds are represented in written form.

New Zealand’s Otago and Auckland universities will next year offer the first qualification for pharmacists wanting to prescribe medicines.
The new qualification comes as the amendment to the country’s Medicines Act is expected to be passed through parliament before the end of the year, opening up the profession for pharmacists to prescribe.
Pharmacists working in hospitals, in areas such as oncology, and in general practice are expected to take up the prescribing certificate qualification but will be unable to dispense their own prescriptions.
Pharmacy Council chief executive Bronwyn Clark said some hospital pharmacists were already determining doses as part of a team.
Ms Clark said prescribing pharmacists would not work alone but would be expected to be part of a collaborative health team.
And she said about 16 percent of the country’s workforce of pharmacists could take up the qualification.
The course is a joint qualification between the two universities which will cater for up to 10 students a year and will involve two papers - one outlining the principles of prescribing and the other a prescribing practicum.
The qualification will be initially limited to pharmacists who have completed a postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy.
Otago School of Pharmacy Dean Stephen Duffull said many pharmacists, both in hospital and primary care settings, had high level clinical roles and were involved with advanced medicine management processes.
He said prescribing would be the next “natural step in their provision of healthcare” for these pharmacists.

Sydney nurse Graham Hextell has seen the difference orthopaedic surgery training and services can make to people in under-developed nations.
The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Nursing lecturer has travelled to several South Pacific countries, including the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands and Tonga, in his role as manager with international charity Orthopaedic Outreach.
There, Graham and his team have witnessed road traffic trauma, workplace injuries and multiple fractures, as people trying to harvest coconuts and mangoes fall from trees, along with explosives’ injuries.
“Some fishermen use home-made bombs as a method to fish,” he said.
“As with any explosive, there are risks, and we have experienced an individual who had the bomb detonate while in his hand.”
Orthopaedic Outreach has also targeted children born with congenital deformity Talipes Equinas known as Club Foot, which is treated with corrective surgery and sometimes bars and bracing.
As a specialist operating theatre nurse working primarily in orthopaedic theatres, Graham’s role with Orthopaedic Outreach involves liaising with hospital administrators and surgeons throughout the Pacific to identify their specific needs and then match those needs with the organisation’s team of volunteers.
“When I travel, the intention is to essentially become redundant – to promote self-sustainability amongst the nursing staff,” he said.
“Much of the surgery we perform would not normally be attempted in these countries, purely through lack of training and experience, and lack of equipment.
“My role is to ensure the local surgeons are actively involved in the planning and treatment for each surgical patient, and to support the local nursing staff through guidance and education regarding their practises, the procedures they are involved in, as well as resource management to the best of their abilities.”

There are numerous organisations that provide the means and support for people wishing to volunteer their services to those most in need. Some large organisations, like Red Cross and Medicins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), are widely known as they use the media to raise awareness or give an assessment of the plight of people across the globe.
One organisation that I spoke to takes volunteers from all over the world. They place people in areas such as nursing, medicine, teaching and many other positions for short and long contracts. The length of their volunteer assignments range from two weeks upwards. This means that even your annual
leave could provide a window of opportunity for you to have a life-changing experience.
Before you decide on which organisation to go with, so your research. There can be costs involved where you cover the travel, medical and personal indemnity insurance and pay for your own airfares. Make sure that you know what is included during the trip.
Check that you have support from people in the organisation where you are placed so that you have someone to go to if problems arise and someone to guide you through the initial part when you arrive.
Two student nurses who recently used their university holidays to volunteer with Projects Abroad generously shared their experiences with me.
Lucy used part of her uni holidays to work in a 100-bed hospital in Tanzania for a month at the end of last year. She told me, ‘I basically just helped the other nurses and doctors out where I could, and assisted patients where needed. There was a language barrier, but during my stay, I picked up enough of the language to have a small conversation with patients, with the help of hand gestures.
She found the whole process very easy, because the staff at both ends, ‘helped me out heaps and answered all my numerous questions.’
Lucy feels that, ‘the nursing experience was invaluable and something every first world medical professional should experience. It made me realise how lucky we are and the vast amount of resources we have.’
Megan went to Nepal for six weeks in her mid-year uni break this year. She was

placed in Chitwan, several hours away from Kathmandu, which she found hard at first due to the isolation. With her host family, she slept in the lounge and there was no privacy. The food was traditional Nepalese and consisted mainly of carbohydrates, lentils and limited vegetables. She found eating the same thing every day a bit of a challenge.
Megan provided some fascinating insights about her time in Nepal. ‘The placement was not at all what I was expecting. I pictured overworked nurses in need of assistance, with lots of sick, dying, poor people. Essentially, I was going in to save the world! Which is a positive, but very naive way to go into a volunteer project.’
Overall though, she says, ‘I learnt, saw and was a part of so many things in the hospital. We were allowed to stand in on surgeries and ask as many questions as we liked, which was an amazing and rare experience.’ She
also got to be involved in delivering babies. In Nepal, for cultural reasons, the family are not allowed in the labour room, so, ‘Suddenly, I was the one that the mother was gripping so tight that I was sure my hand would break!’
From what they and others have told me, the most important things when taking on a volunteer position is go equipped with as much information as you can about where you are going and how it all works, and make sure that you are covered with insurance. It is a good idea to check out other volunteers’ experiences and stories with the organisation you are looking at joining and if possible talk to them. They will be able to offer lots of advice.
These two students will always remember their unique experiences and surely it will help make them wonderful registered nurses.

Sydney nurse Graham Hextell has seen the difference orthopaedic surgery training and services can make to people in under-developed nations.
The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Nursing lecturer has travelled to several South Pacific countries, including the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands and Tonga, in his role as manager with international charity Orthopaedic Outreach.
There, Graham and his team have witnessed road traffic trauma, workplace injuries and multiple fractures, as people trying to harvest coconuts and mangoes fall from trees, along with explosives’ injuries.
“Some fishermen use home-made bombs as a method to fish,” he said.
“As with any explosive, there are risks, and we have experienced an individual who had the bomb detonate while in his hand.”
Orthopaedic Outreach has also targeted children born with congenital deformity Talipes Equinas known as Club Foot, which is treated with corrective surgery and sometimes bars and bracing.
As a specialist operating theatre nurse working primarily in orthopaedic theatres, Graham’s role with Orthopaedic Outreach involves liaising with hospital administrators and surgeons throughout the Pacific to identify their specific needs and then match those needs with the organisation’s team of volunteers.
“When I travel, the intention is to essentially become redundant – to promote self-sustainability amongst the nursing staff,” he said.
“Much of the surgery we perform would not normally be attempted in these countries, purely through lack of training and experience, and lack of equipment.
“My role is to ensure the local surgeons are actively involved in the planning and treatment for each surgical patient, and to support the local nursing staff through guidance and education regarding their practises, the procedures they are involved in, as well as resource management to the best of their abilities.”

There are numerous organisations that provide the means and support for people wishing to volunteer their services to those most in need. Some large organisations, like Red Cross and Medicins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), are widely known as they use the media to raise awareness or give an assessment of the plight of people across the globe.
One organisation that I spoke to takes volunteers from all over the world. They place people in areas such as nursing, medicine, teaching and many other positions for short and long contracts. The length of their volunteer assignments range from two weeks upwards. This means that even your annual
leave could provide a window of opportunity for you to have a life-changing experience.
Before you decide on which organisation to go with, so your research. There can be costs involved where you cover the travel, medical and personal indemnity insurance and pay for your own airfares. Make sure that you know what is included during the trip.
Check that you have support from people in the organisation where you are placed so that you have someone to go to if problems arise and someone to guide you through the initial part when you arrive.
Two student nurses who recently used their university holidays to volunteer with Projects Abroad generously shared their experiences with me.
Lucy used part of her uni holidays to work in a 100-bed hospital in Tanzania for a month at the end of last year. She told me, ‘I basically just helped the other nurses and doctors out where I could, and assisted patients where needed. There was a language barrier, but during my stay, I picked up enough of the language to have a small conversation with patients, with the help of hand gestures.
She found the whole process very easy, because the staff at both ends, ‘helped me out heaps and answered all my numerous questions.’
Lucy feels that, ‘the nursing experience was invaluable and something every first world medical professional should experience. It made me realise how lucky we are and the vast amount of resources we have.’
Megan went to Nepal for six weeks in her mid-year uni break this year. She was

placed in Chitwan, several hours away from Kathmandu, which she found hard at first due to the isolation. With her host family, she slept in the lounge and there was no privacy. The food was traditional Nepalese and consisted mainly of carbohydrates, lentils and limited vegetables. She found eating the same thing every day a bit of a challenge.
Megan provided some fascinating insights about her time in Nepal. ‘The placement was not at all what I was expecting. I pictured overworked nurses in need of assistance, with lots of sick, dying, poor people. Essentially, I was going in to save the world! Which is a positive, but very naive way to go into a volunteer project.’
Overall though, she says, ‘I learnt, saw and was a part of so many things in the hospital. We were allowed to stand in on surgeries and ask as many questions as we liked, which was an amazing and rare experience.’ She
also got to be involved in delivering babies. In Nepal, for cultural reasons, the family are not allowed in the labour room, so, ‘Suddenly, I was the one that the mother was gripping so tight that I was sure my hand would break!’
From what they and others have told me, the most important things when taking on a volunteer position is go equipped with as much information as you can about where you are going and how it all works, and make sure that you are covered with insurance. It is a good idea to check out other volunteers’ experiences and stories with the organisation you are looking at joining and if possible talk to them. They will be able to offer lots of advice.
These two students will always remember their unique experiences and surely it will help make them wonderful registered nurses.

A mental health nurse has been sacked for expressing her view on mandatory detention and its effects on mental health.
International Health and Medical Services sacked the nurse, who had worked at a Darwin detention centre for two weeks, citing professional standard reasons but stating in a letter to the nurse that she had expressed “negative political opinions” on detention.
The move came as mental health nurses joined psychologists, psychiatrists and other industry experts to demand the Federal Government abandon the indefinite detention of asylum seekers.
It follows the release of Department of Immigration and Citizenship documents which reveal that 213 detainees were treated for self-inflicted injuries and 700 for voluntary starvation in the first six months of this year.
Department secretary Andrew Metcalfe presented the information during a Senate Inquiry into the system, which costs $772 million a year to maintain, questioning the government’s policy.
Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Adjunct Associate Professor Kim Ryan said she was outraged at the nurse’s sacking.
“The opinion this mental health nurse expressed is based on strong evidence showing that mandatory detention contributes to mental illness,” Professor Ryan said.
“Mental health nurses provide services to people in many difficult and unfortunate circumstances.
“Whether they work in a detention centre, a hospital or in the community, a mental health nurse has to look at their clients’ circumstances and consider how they impact on their mental health.
“The mandatory and indefinite detention of asylum seekers should be ceased in favour of less restrictive and more cost-effective community-based alternatives.”
Australian Psychological Society Adjunct Associate Professor Amanda Gordon said the length and uncertainty of refugee processing contributed to trauma, creating mental illness.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapist Karen Finnin launched the country’s first and only online personalised injury management business www.physios-online.com for areas without access to physios, after being inspired by the success of her private practice, Physiotherapy Timor, in Dili.
Karen ventured to Dili in 2007 to support her husband Dan Uden, also a physiotherapist, who was supplying physiotherapy services to members of the Australian Defence Force serving in Timor.
It was then Karen realised there was a need for access to good quality injury management for the thousands of non-Defence expat workers and locals living in Timor.
“My clientele were from the UN, the Australian Federal Police, volunteers and a vast array of development projects,” she said.
“Many were Australian but I saw people from all over the world.”
Karen said she treated up to 30 patients a week.
“Most of these people are very passionate about their jobs, so work long hours,” she said.
“Most are working on laptops, with whatever chairs and desks can be found. It will come as no surprise then, to discover that many of the ailments I saw related to spinal issues.
“There was also a collection of sports related injuries, and injuries from falls from motorbikes and tripping over the vast collection of potholes along Dili’s roads.

A Perth speech pathologist is working with teachers at a remote school in Western Australia to tackle the low literacy rates of Indigenous students.
Diana Rigg has helped turn around literacy levels at the Rawa Community School, part of the Punmu Community, located in the Great Sandy Desert area of the Pilabara, where she has been working for the past two years.
Speaking to highlight Speech Pathology Week, which celebrates the speech pathology profession from August 21-27, Ms Rigg said when she first began work at the school, the majority of its 70 students were assessed as non-readers.
“Now the whole school is reading and we’re looking at expanding the program to Rawa’s sister schools,” she said.
Speech Pathology Australia research shows Indigenous students in isolated areas have less books and computers at home while high absenteeism rates also contribute to a negative impact on the development of their English literacy skills.
More than half of Indigenous families living in very remote communities speak an Indigenous language in their home while more than 70 percent also suffer chronic serious middle ear diseases that can cause permanent hearing loss and inhibit language and literacy development.
Ms Rigg said Rawa students were shown how to focus on oral language and the sounds that make up words, which taught them how to hear the different sounds in words and how these sounds are represented in written form.

New Zealand’s Otago and Auckland universities will next year offer the first qualification for pharmacists wanting to prescribe medicines.
The new qualification comes as the amendment to the country’s Medicines Act is expected to be passed through parliament before the end of the year, opening up the profession for pharmacists to prescribe.
Pharmacists working in hospitals, in areas such as oncology, and in general practice are expected to take up the prescribing certificate qualification but will be unable to dispense their own prescriptions.
Pharmacy Council chief executive Bronwyn Clark said some hospital pharmacists were already determining doses as part of a team.
Ms Clark said prescribing pharmacists would not work alone but would be expected to be part of a collaborative health team.
And she said about 16 percent of the country’s workforce of pharmacists could take up the qualification.
The course is a joint qualification between the two universities which will cater for up to 10 students a year and will involve two papers - one outlining the principles of prescribing and the other a prescribing practicum.
The qualification will be initially limited to pharmacists who have completed a postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy.
Otago School of Pharmacy Dean Stephen Duffull said many pharmacists, both in hospital and primary care settings, had high level clinical roles and were involved with advanced medicine management processes.
He said prescribing would be the next “natural step in their provision of healthcare” for these pharmacists.

Australia’s nursing and midwifery labour force is growing with a new report showing there were 276,751 nurses employed in 2009, up 13 percent in four years.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2009 report found the supply of nurses grew 6.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 1040 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population to 1105 full-time equivalent nurses based on a 38-hour week.
The report found the increase was mostly the result of both a 13.3 percent increase in the number of employed nurses, and a 0.9 percent increase in the average hours they worked over that period.
It showed nursing continued to be a female dominated profession, with females comprising 90.4 percent of employed nurses in 2009, down slightly from 92.1 percent in 2005, while nurses worked 33.3 hours a week, a 0.3 percent increase on 2005.
The total number of nurses in 2009 was estimated to be 320,982, including 260,121 registered nurses and 60,861 enrolled nurses.
And the number of registered and enrolled nurses either working or seeking work increased 14.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 254,956 to 291,246.
The report showed the number of nurses working part-time decreased from 49.8 percent to 47.7 percent.
It also showed nursing supply across regions ranged from 997 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population in major cities to 1,240 in very remote areas.

Ten nurse practitioners and four eligible midwives will be employed at the first standalone NP-led clinic in Australia, opening at the end of September.
The SmartClinics facility, located at Queensland’s Chermside Westfield shopping centre, will be the first of its kind, delivering standalone primary healthcare from NPs and eligible midwives, with the support of a GP.
SmartClinics lead NP Julie Farrelly said patients at the clinic will have access to treatment for colds and flus, vaccinations, wound care, blood tests, repeat prescriptions and medical certificates, health checks, fracture assessment, pregnancy check-ups and more.
Ms Farrelly acquired her Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and completed her Masters Degree at the age of 40, then worked in a busy city emergency department as an NP candidate before becoming endorsed as an NP in 2007.
She then became the first NP employed at the Caboolture emergency department where she worked for three years before joining SmartClinics.
“I was led down the path towards becoming a Nurse Practitioner through my personal need to validate the advanced skills I had developed over many years of general nursing and midwifery,” she said.
“There were many times as the sole registered nurse on duty, when I was required to assess and begin treatment for ill patients or labouring mums and then relay my findings to a GP, who was often many kilometres away.
“I wanted to ensure that my advance assessment skills were accurate and that any treatments I commenced were based on current evidence.”
Ms Farrelly said she loved being an NP.
“It always comes back to my patients and their satisfaction with my care,” she said.
“Nurse Practitioners provide holistic care, right from greeting them at the door through to examining, diagnosing, treating, referring when necessary and discharging them home or to specialist treatment.”
SmartClinics plans to open a second clinic in south east Queensland in the near future.

My preceptor and mentor during my first year as a new graduate was an incredibly dedicated, passionate and knowledgeable senior nurse from London who had completed her training at Great Ormond Street Paediatric Hospital, one of the UK’s leading tertiary institutions. The amazing stories she shared and her pride and love for her hometown reignited the dream I had to live and travel in the UK, but this time the dream also incorporated my nursing career. A friend of mine who had worked in the UK had mentioned an agency called PULSE who I remember her saying were incredible in her transition and registration organization. So in early 2008 I gave excitedly gave them a call from that moment my dream started to become a reality.

The initial money that I earned whilst waiting for my registration enabled some travel to Paris and Venice which was amazing, and immediately upon gaining my registration, I was offered an incredible amount of work opportunities in my chosen field of Paediatrics. The most incredible opportunity came when after a few months of working at various health care institutions throughout London working in specialities of Emergency, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Surgical I was offered a Block contract at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, where I was able to work alongside the best Paediatric Surgical Nurses and Doctors in the world, gaining invaluable experience and guidance to further grow and develop in my love and passion for Surgical and Trauma Paediatric Nursing. It truly was the best experience of my life, and to also work alongside my nursing mentor from years earlier was extremely fulfilling and amazing. I found my experience working with PULSE in the UK to be an invaluable part of my career development.
I could not have be more grateful for the assistance, guidance and opportunities I received from PULSE. Working and travelling in the UK was made easy and stress free, and for that I am forever thankful. Australia’s nursing and midwifery labour force is growing with a new report showing there were 276,751 nurses employed in 2009, up 13 percent in four years.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2009 report found the supply of nurses grew 6.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 1040 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population to 1105 full-time equivalent nurses based on a 38-hour week.
The report found the increase was mostly the result of both a 13.3 percent increase in the number of employed nurses, and a 0.9 percent increase in the average hours they worked over that period.
It showed nursing continued to be a female dominated profession, with females comprising 90.4 percent of employed nurses in 2009, down slightly from 92.1 percent in 2005, while nurses worked 33.3 hours a week, a 0.3 percent increase on 2005.
The total number of nurses in 2009 was estimated to be 320,982, including 260,121 registered nurses and 60,861 enrolled nurses.
And the number of registered and enrolled nurses either working or seeking work increased 14.2 percent between 2005 and 2009, from 254,956 to 291,246.
The report showed the number of nurses working part-time decreased from 49.8 percent to 47.7 percent.
It also showed nursing supply across regions ranged from 997 full-time equivalent nurses per 100,000 population in major cities to 1,240 in very remote areas.
