‐ Can use summer programming to incorporate OMK Day, military day, specific topic/subject matter, curriculum or summer day camps ‐ County 4‐H programs can collaborate with surrounding counties to host events ‐ Collaborate with other organizations to sponsor/host events ‐ NC OM Visual Arts Contest • Local/county (military & non‐military youth participation) • Set earlier date to hold contest • Conduct a photography and artwork workshop where participants can learn about photography and artwork. • Could use workshop finished products as part of entry to contest (local & state) • Can send winners from each theme, or age group or best in show (your choice) ‐ OMK 4H Day: STEM DAY/Weekend or Day Camp (MATH FOCUSED)

For Military Kids – 15 April • Organize a Purple Up! Fundraiser to help support Hero Packs • Host a Purple Up! For Military Kids to honor military kids and families everyone wears purple. • Plant a Purple Up! Flower garden with all purple flowers • Celebrate Military Family Month ‐ November • Collect Purple Flavored Pop‐Tarts and donate to

• Designate a central location and have a “time to reflect” military youth • Ask local, regional, and state officials to wear purple on April 13th • Spread the word by inviting newspaper and media outlets to feature a story about Purple Up! For Military Kids

• Involve area schools, sports teams, youth organizations and clubs, afterschool programs, recreation departments • Engage the Chamber of Commerce, fraternal organizations, social clubs, and Rotary groups • Request local businesses post a Purple Up! message on their roadside signs, and ask their employees to wear purple • Ask stores and restaurants to offer a discount to all patrons who wear purple • Invite coworkers, members of your spiritual community, exercise class, or golf league to join you in showing support for the military youth in your town
‐ Sports Day • Military Appreciation Day with a local high school or college sports event • Collaborate with the local Parks & Recreation Department with a “sports day” to introduce kids to a variety of sports right before school starts • Collaborate with a local gym or YMCA to offer “Intro” to sports, their facility • Take A Kid Fishing Day – introduce to fisheries and aquaculture ‐ Game Night • Board games – hold a tournament (for military youth and/or family)
* Could use the Deployment: It’s not a game… as part of your event • Video games – hold a tournament (for military youth and/or family) ‐ Food Extravaganza (great way to introduce to Presentations) & to team with FCS • Chili Cook‐off • Holiday Bake‐off (sweets, casseroles, etc.) • Summer Coolness (make homemade ice cream or teach how to make) ‐ Food Safety and Preservation – team with FCS Agent • Youth Component • Adult Component • Family Component ‐ Essay/Creative Writing Contest (can publish the winner or winners in each age category) • Military experience • What people should know about being a military kid • Creative writing workshop ‐ Horticulture Workshop • Teach them how to grow a garden and utilize for freezing (collaborate with FCS Food Safety/Preservation) ‐ Landscaping Workshop • How to beautify their home, neighborhoods (good community service project) • Show how landscaping could become a profession
