Particular thanks to the Rowing Support Group and Barralong coordinator Ms Julie Ledger for all of their hard work. The group will raise over $50,000 again this year from this venture.

Protected Action

We have been informed by the Independent Education Union that industrial action will occur at many Queensland Catholic schools next week, including St Joseph’s Nudgee College. Some of our staff will be involved in this action. This industrial action is linked to enterprise bargaining negotiations currently being undertaken within Queensland Catholic schools. We have staff that are not in the Union and also staff who are members of the Union. Those staff members who are members of the Independent Education Union, recently voted to take industrial action in the form of:

• Monday 14 September - commence work bans for an indefinite period

• Tuesday 15 September - Wear 3Rs campaign stickers

• Wednesday 16 September - Stop work for 30 Minutes from 2.45pm to 3.15pm

• Thursday 17 September - Stop work for one hour from 2.30pm to 3.30pm

Please be assured that the College will operate as usual and that this action will not impact your child’s examinations, learning or supervision. Along with other Catholic school employers, we respect the right of employees to take appropriate industrial action.

Examinations

Good luck to all students with their upcoming examinations. Please encourage your son to look after all the little things that keep a healthy body and mind traveling well.

• A good night’s sleep

• A healthy breakfast and lunch

• Stay hydrated

• Talk to people if you are feeling stressed

• Stay calm as a parent/guardian

Walk to the Philippines

Next Friday we end our Term with our annual Walk to the Philippines. During our three hour walk, our boys will raise close to $40,000. This is the equivalent of paying a Filipina teacher’s wage for 20 years, or building 80 family homes in the Philippines. Every dollar goes a very long way, so we ask our young men to make one last effort this weekend to raise as much money as they possibly can and thank you all for your support of this great cause.

#LightTheDark / World Refugee and Migrant Sunday

Last week, the world was shocked by images of three year old Aylan Kurdi, whose body was washed up on a beach along with his brother, mother and other Syrian refugees. This tragic incident has highlighted the significance of the current refugee crisis in Syria with more than 4 million people having now fled the country and a further 8 million being internally displaced. While Aylan’s death is clearly a tragedy, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, an average of six other Syrian children have been killed every day this year from barrel bombs dropped by the Syrian government.

At our College Assembly on Tuesday, Year 9 students Meecham Hollister and Tom Cusack spoke passionately about the plight of asylum seekers and refugees, and reminded us of Pope Francis’ words on the World Day of Migrants and Refugees a fortnight ago. Following the theme ‘Church Without Frontiers, Mother to All’, the pope called all Christians to “create a culture of acceptance and solidarity, and reduce the distances that so often separate us from the plight of refugees. We must work as a global community to be charitable, and make the conditions of refugees and asylum seekers more humane.”

In response, churches and individuals across Europe are opening their doors to people fleeing the Syrian crisis, and welcoming refugees into their own homes. This week across Australia, thousands have gathered for candlelight vigils to remember Aylan and the other deceased Syrian people, and to call on our government to do more to support those fleeing violence and destruction. Today we responded with our own candlelight vigil in the College Chapel, along with ERA For Change schools around the country. We pray for all those forced from their homes and families around the world, and that we may do what we can to support and comfort them.

Growth Mindset

After a big week of QCS for our Year 12s last week and with the exam block almost upon us, I thought the article below, one I wrote last year, was perfect for where our boys are at in the term and academic year.

I had read an interesting article by Salman Khan (founder of the Khan Academy). It was titled The Learning Myth: Why I’ll Never Tell My Son He’s Smart. Khan wrote the following:

My five year old son has just started reading. Every night, we lie on his bed and he reads a short book to me. Inevitably, he’ll hit a word that he has trouble with; last night the word was ‘gratefully’. He eventually got it after a fairly painful minute. He then said, “Dad, aren’t you glad how I struggled with that word? I think I could feel my brain growing”. I smiled, my son was now verbalizing the tell -tale signs of a ‘growth mindset’. But this wasn’t by accident. Recently, I put into practice research I had been reading about for the past few years. I decided to praise my son, not when he succeeded at things he was already good at, but when he persevered with things that he found difficult. I stressed to him that by struggling, your brain grows. Between the deep body of research on the field of learning mindsets and this personal experience with my son, I am more convinced than ever that mindsets toward learning could matter more than anything else we teach.

Researchers have known for some time that the brain is like a muscle; that the more you use it, the more it grows. They’ve found that neural connections form and deepen most when we make mistakes doing difficult tasks rather than repeatedly having success with easy ones. What this means is that our intelligence is not fixed, and the best way that we can grow our intelligence is to embrace tasks where we might struggle and fail.

He goes on to talk about the growth mindset, which simply means believing that capability and intelligence can be grown through effort, struggle and failure. People with a growth mindset embrace challenges, and understand that tenacity and effort can change their learning outcomes. Habits of Mind embrace this growth mindset. We want our boys to use the Habits and work with the belief that each of them can develop habits that will affect even small changes in the way they approach a problem and the way they communicate. With a growth mindset and the use of Habits of Mind there is no end to what that could mean for each boy’s potential.

Good luck to all the boys undertaking exams over the coming week, especially the Year 12 boys. As Term 3 draws to a close and with the QCS done for another year, the final Term of their secondary schooling is all that remains of their time here at Nudgee College. There will be time for celebrations in mid-November. Until then the Year 12 boys need to embrace a growth mindset and know that there are still a few more kilometres to run before their race is over.

Student FormationMr Paul BeggDean of StudentsEREA Pastoral Conference

Last week Mr John Cross (Head of Cotter Boarding House) and I were fortunate enough to attend the EREA Pastoral Deans Conference in Perth. While visiting our brother Edmund Rice schools such as Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) Fremantle, Aquinas College and Trinity College was enjoyable and a wonderful opportunity to look at facilities and methods, the greater impact was in the sharing of Pastoral and Student Formation ideas and initiatives.

There were 55 delegates from 26 other EREA schools across all states and there were many topics discussed. From St Pius X in Chatswood we discussed the methodology and value of school-wide implementation of the Mind Matters program for students and staff; delegates from St Edmund’s Canberra shared their ‘effort performance average’ indicator which is used in correlation with GPA; St Brendan’s College Yeppoon detailed their transition program for rural or remote students with learning deficits; and CBC Fremantle tabled an approach to Pastoral Care that focused on ideas of commitment rather than compliance, and the value of working with notions of responsibility and self-discipline with their young men. It was a great week - there was a lot to learn and plenty of opportunities to confirm that our approach is current and best practice. There was also a chance to extrapolate from the experiences of others in boys’ schools and look at what we can implement to improve the standard of care and the development of character in our young men.

Anyone interested in discussing outcomes of the course can call me, or if you prefer feel free to access the summary document at prezi.com/126jvoh1b1eu/post-erea-conference-reflections-where-does-character-develop-at-nudgee

Year 11 Mentoring Program

In collaboration with the Nudgee College Old Boys’ Association we would like to offer students in Year 11 the opportunity to take part in St Joseph’s Nudgee College’s inaugural mentoring program. A breakfast will be held in Ryan Hall on Friday 23 October from 7.30am to 8.30am.

To ensure that we were capturing the boys areas of interest we surveyed the entire Year 11 cohort and received 101 responses. We are in the process of organising mentors to match the boys who responded with their areas of interest.

Due to limited places, priority will be given to those boys who gave up their time to attend lunch box meetings and responded to the mentoring survey.

The industries include business/commerce/banking/stock broking, engineering, medicine, law, physiotherapy, agriculture, police, defence, journalism/creative writing and architecture.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Junior SchoolMr Chris CawleyDirector of Junior SchoolFather’s Day

It was wonderful to see so many fathers and grandfathers here last Friday. I hope your day on Sunday was enjoyable and spent with those close to you.

Nudgee College vs Gregory Terrace

Last weekend was one of those weekends where you wonder how you fit all the activities in, from Basketball, Chess and Track and Field on Friday, to the Dimensions NC Art Festival, through to a huge day of Rugby on Saturday. I had the pleasure of watching every Under 11 game down on Flat 7, and one thing stood out to me. Whilst the score line was in our favour, five games to nil, it was the true spirit exhibited by the boys that grabbed my attention. At the start of every game a tunnel was formed with boys cheering their mates onto the field. At the conclusion of the game the rendition of the College war cry was belted out with great enthusiasm and pride. What I witnessed were boys who were genuine in their care for one another and boys who, despite their dominance on the scoreboard, showed their opposition the utmost respect. Congratulations to all boys who in some way represented our College last weekend against Gregory Terrace, a job well done.

Walk to the Philippines

The major fundraiser for the year at Nudgee College is the Walk to the Philippines. We raise money throughout the year for many projects and the generosity of the Nudgee College community is second to none. This cause is so close to the heart of Nudgee College, and our Year 10 Immersion boys to the Philippines, that again at Assembly this week Mrs Maureen Toohey spoke passionately about the difference our fundraising makes. All money and receipt books are due back to the College by next Wednesday 16 September.

On the day students are permitted to wear free dress, but must remember to dress appropriately for the walk. Enclosed shoes only, and students are not permitted to wear singlets. The usual essentials of a hat, water bottle and sunscreen are required.

The College Term will conclude at 1.00pm with our normal bus runs moved forward to 1.10pm. These will be the only buses departing next Friday.

BoardingMr John CrossHead of Cotter Boarding HouseBoarders Bash

After a great day of Rugby, parents, Old Boys, supporters and friends made their way over to the MacKillop Centre to toast the success of the day and renew friendships. It was great for Boarding staff to be able to catch up with parents and many of the boys we’ve cared for in the past, and hear some amazing stories of how their lives have transpired since leaving Nudgee College. The impact of Nudgee College on the lives of so many men was obvious in the distance that some travelled to be a part of the weekend. Thanks must go to:

• The Boarder Parent Support Group

• Mr Brett Foster and the Music department

• Mr Andre Maestracci and the Property and Services team for much of the set up, and tidying up the venue

• Kitchen staff for the catering

• Mr Raoul Carmody and the Events and AV crew for managing this event on what was already such a big weekend for them

• Mr Jeff Campbell, Ms Michelle Guerrero, Mr George Goves, Mr Michael Phillips and the Staff Club for organising the refreshments and working the bar, and thank you also to Mr Graham Leddie for helping out on the night

• Ms Tara Shipperley and the Development and Communications staff for all the pre-event advertising and consciousness raising

• All members of staff who came down for an opportunity to meet up with current families, past families and Old Boys

• Mr Peter Fullagar for his presence and support of the event

End of Term Arrangements and Exams

As most of you would be aware, exam block starts this Friday. Year 11 and 12 students will study in the Boarding House when not sitting exams, while all other year groups will attend classes as normal. Once Year 11 and 12s complete their exams, they should make arrangements to travel home so that those still completing assessment can study without distraction.

Classes for those not on exam block finish at 1.00pm on Friday 18 September.

All end of Term travel arrangements should now be finalised with your son’s Head of Boarding House through the REACH leave system. Your urgent attention to organising travel is much appreciated.

Term 4

Boarders are to return on Monday 5 October and school starts on Tuesday 6 October. The first day of school will be the College athletics carnival.

Boys will return to the summer uniform in Term 4, however all boarders should return with their blazer, tie and one white shirt as there will be a number of occasions when formal uniform will be required, such as Awards Night.

ActivitiesSport and CultureCHESS

In the second to last round of the GPS Chess season, Nudgee College’s Chess team had a very close match against Gregory Terrace (GT). In the 1st IV Aaron Fahey continued his very successful season with another win against a higher rated player, while Tom Kennedy won on board three with less than a minute on his clock. This secured the 1st IV a 2-2 draw. The Open D and E teams also ended with draws thanks to wins from Aaron Calvert, Branden Hargreaves, Ryan Wedmaier and Ben Neal.

The Junior, Open B and Open C teams have performed well all year and they continued this success on Friday with the Junior and Open C teams winning 4-0, and the Open B team winning 3-1. This was due to the efforts of Henry Kennedy, Jacob Martin, Caleb Giorgas, Joshua Peters, Thomas Ibrahim, Heath Trotman, Nicholas Blyth, Will Murdoch, Caleb Reiher, Mikey Dechphant and Fletcher Barber. The Open A team unfortunately lost 1-3; however Jazz Born was still able to win his game.

With one final match against IGS this week we can hope for a strong end to the season.

Mr Martin Harmon and Matthew Gilpin Directors of Nudgee Chess

CROSS COUNTRY

The National Cross Country Championships were held last weekend in Melbourne. Held in freezing conditions, the individual races were contested at the Moonee Valley Racecourse.  In large and high standard fields, David Lean came 16th over the 6km course in the Under 18s, and Nelson Birogi came 34th in the 4km Under 16 race. Nelson backed up to run the time trial over 2km in a smart 6.07 mins. Well done to both the boys on fine Cross Country seasons.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Track and Field squad’s third competition of the season was held last week on the SAF track. Hosted by Gregory Terrace (GT) our boys looked great as they warmed up as a group. It is really lovely to see some of the Seniors stepping up to lead the younger lads in the warm up, and throughout the night.

The 10 to 12 year old hurdles and 100m are conducted on the back straight, and it is terrific for the older lads to look across from the stand to see the white shirts of Nudgee College hurdling or racing. One coach remarked on what great style our boys were showing. Alex Desmond and Alex Clark had terrific hurdles races in the 12 years, whilst Ashley Wong and Bayley Cavanagh carved up the 11 years 100m and 200m. Cooper Cameron is improving each week and looks like one to watch out for. In the 10 years Alex Romano has dominated the 100m and 200m, whilst Valentin Houard is leading the way in the Hurdles. The Junior field saw some good Long Jumping, and Discus throwers Matthew Wendt, Malachi Tuck and Jack Harkins lead the way. Shot Put stars this week were Archie Condon, Oliver Langton and Liam Hude.

The middle distance runners had to contend with some pretty stiff head winds, but despite this there were some great performances. Aidan Read, Alex Kluck, Paddy Dallimore, Sam Rogers, Jaisson Angalo, Nick Cardiff and Will Cartwright all impressed with their tenacious spirit over the 800m. Notable personal bests within the ranks of the older lads came from Brock Hunter with a nine second improvement in the 1500m, and Hayden Barrett tucking in nicely into the wind to record a five second personal best over the 3km. Possibly the highlight of the night was the Open 800m race. Yousif Birogi took the race out hard, and Nudgee College were running in the top four places. One massive battle took place as Harry O’Sullivan and David Lean took the lead and battled it out right to the finish line, both stopping the clock at two minutes flat.

Fields were small in the 100m, 200m and 400m, but it was great to see solid hit outs from Fletcher Esteban and Tom O’Neil. Dominant runs to Mason Sorby in the 100m and 200m, and Hayden Shoobridge in the 400m were eye catching.

In the field, Gus Tascheret (Javelin) and Mitchell Herrigan (Triple Jump) produced personal bests, and our Senior boys again had a show down at the Shot Put ring.

This week we look forward to hosting the lead up competition on our home track.

We are hoping that all Track and Field boys will attend.

RUGBY

Gregory Terrace (GT) week wrap-up

The GT round was an eventful week in the Rugby calendar for Nudgee College, with the inaugural St Joseph’s Rugby Luncheon on Friday providing the perfect build up to the home round of fixtures against our GT brothers, played in front of thousands of supporters on Saturday. The inaugural St Joseph’s Rugby Cup, donated through the Luncheon, was the reward for the overall winning school, and we were fortunate enough to win the honours 17 to 13 (+ 1 draw), including a close fought win in the 1st XV. A big thank you to Mr Jim Campbell, Mr Steve Flook and all the parents and friends for supporting this major Rugby fundraiser. The funds raised will go directly back in to the Rugby program to ensure our boys have the best resources and facilities possible.

Team in Focus - 12B

By Andrew Curtain (12B Coach)

The season started off well with a couple of convincing wins. Our first hard game came in the supplementary draw against Ambrose Treacy College where a last minute intercept try sealed the win for the 12Bs and set the tone for the season. The team continued to show their great commitment to Nudgee College Rugby with the early 6.15am starts. All the boys worked hard and kept the competition between the groups strong.

We moved in to the Churchie game undefeated and this was one of the hardest games of the season. Coming up against a bigger side the mighty 12Bs found a way to the try line through some great counter attack and speed out wide. This would not be enough as we pressured the Churchie line - we just could not barge over - and after a turnover Churchie capitalised and scored an 80m try to win.

With bounce back wins against TSS and BGS the boys started to show the form that they started the season with and players in the 12Bs were putting real pressure on the 12As coaches to make changes.

Last game of the season for the 12Bs was against a very well drilled GT side. They were again a bigger side and very well drilled at the breakdown, but once again the Nudgee College boys showed their hard work, commitment, and technique and continued to dominate the game and capitalise on opportunities. As the referee signalled last play GT was attacking the Nudgee College line where a quick turnover saw the Nudgee College boys escape the danger. This was short lived however, after some great play the GT side offloaded in contact four times to see the fastest player on the field end up with the ball and scoot over to score a match winning try. The season was a success, with the 12Bs learning the true meaning of respect and commitment to the Nudgee College Rugby program.

Nudgee in National Rugby Championships (NRC)

Nudgee College will feature prominently in tonight’s NRC fixture at Ballymore. As our 15A side tackle Ipswich Grammar in the curtain raiser, our 11 Gold side play in the half-time match and a number of Nudgee College Old Boys will represent Brisbane City in the main game, including current 12D coach Patrick James.

The 15A game kicks off at 5.45pm and the main game at 7.30pm. For those wishing to attend, buses will leave Nudgee College at 5.00pm and return at approximately 9.30pm. Boys need to be in full winter uniform and there will be no charge to get in.

We have also been offered a free ticket for students with every paying adult for those coming in with their parents. To redeem this offer participants must enter the promo code of ‘JUNIORPLAYER’ and quote their school when purchasing tickets. All junior tickets must be redeemed with at least one adult and this offer is only available online. Go to www.redsrugby.com.au

Final Round V IGS

Our final round of the season is away at Ipswich Grammar on Saturday. Many teams played their final game last weekend as there are no supplementary games this week. Check Team App for playing times and good luck to the teams who are playing, it’s important we finish the season strongly.

Mrs Monica See Head of English (Year 7 to 12)

Dimensions Nudgee College Art Festival 2015 was a wonderful success this year and we would like to thank our Nudgee College families who supported the event and purchased raffle tickets. Whilst the Cultural Events Committee organises the event, it would not be the success it is without the support of many departments throughout our College.

The Art department is an integral part of the Festival, in particular Mr Gregg Elliott. Gregg and his staff work long hours organising, cataloguing and hanging all the student art, as well as installing the art pieces for both the competition and our guest artists. This is a huge undertaking that is handled with a minimum of fuss and a keen eye for presentation. Thank you to Gregg and his team - we wouldn’t be able to pull this event off without your continued support.

This year saw the addition of ‘Live Painting’ at the Opening Night Gala. Connor McBeath (Year 11) completed a portrait and Hugh Foster (Year 12) a splatter painting of a blue ringed octopus. It can be a difficult feat producing work in front of a live audience, but it was well executed by our young gentlemen.

Another big thank you must go to the Music department and Mr Brett Foster. Dimensions gives our Music students a great platform on which to showcase their talents. We greatly appreciate the rehearsals, organisation and scheduling that has gone into making the entertainment at the Gala and over the weekend another integral part of the Festival.

Thank you to Year 12 student Liam Riordon for being Master of Ceremonies at the Pre-Gala and Gala events on Friday. He was a great addition to the evening and helped with the smooth flow and introduction of our many performances.

Mr Raoul Carmody and the AV Crew once again provided professional support for our event, covering everything from adding new lighting and furniture, installation of marquees, running student videos, and adding pipped music and microphones where and when it was needed. They are indeed our ‘go to people’ who provide the smooth platform on which the Festival operates.

The Catering department excelled itself with the beautiful presentation of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and piping hot delicious paella and asian noodle boxes. Once again your efforts are greatly appreciated.

The Finance department were a great support once again as they worked with the added load of processing the monies for the Gala and raffle tickets. Also thank you to Ms Tara Shipperley and Ms Tiffany Lloyd for getting our newsletter items published on time and with a professional finish.

Another huge thank you goes to our sponsors of the Dimensions raffle. This is our major fundraising event each year and without their support the raffle would not be the success it is: Mrs Gayle and Mr Paul Creswick (NCOB) - Brinkley Ski Resort accommodation, Methven, New Zealand; Canale Travel - Travel Voucher; Ms Kylie Farrelly - Artwork; Mr and Mrs Ready - Ready Towing Donation; Terry White Chemists - Fragrance Basket

Once again Zarraffa’s Coffee Boondall, who donated the coffee for our coffee shop as well as their talented baristas and coffee machine. Thank you to Julia and team for your continued support of our festival.

Thank you for your support. We hope you enjoyed the Festival and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s event.
