Navratri means “Nine Nights”

This is a time when the Divine Mother makes Herself easily

available and accessible to all of her children. When the children

seek the Mother, she blesses them.

Navratri is celebrated four times a year with the fall and spring-

time celebrations the most popular.

Although Navratri comes to the world through Indian culture

and traditions, the Divine Mother is everywhere, in all cultures,

traditions, and people. “Mother! You are all these names and

forms. You are the supreme controller and omnipotent. Free us

from fear!” She is accessible to us in all her forms!

In this booklet you will find an introduction to the Divine Moth-

er, traditional mantras and prayers to Her, and a list of some of

the many names and descriptions which are used to honor Her.

These provide a simple, easy way to honor and acknowledge the

Divine Mother. Simply read this booklet, or even just one page,

daily for each of the nine nights/ten days, and continue thereafter

to maintain your relationship with Her.

Of the Divine Mother

Above all the Gods who come and go in the consciousness of man, through the rise and fall of civilizations, in

the abode of infinite space, in absolute peace, where time is no more, there resides the Great Mother of all

creation, one with Her Lord, the Supreme Spirit.

The Great Goddess, matrix and creatrix of all that is, takes as many forms or aspects of manifestation as the

human mind can conceive. Within and without, it is always She who weaves the patterns of all life as the Di-

vine Force behind everything perceived by the senses. She is Universal and has many names. She is known

the world over by various, diverse names.

The Divine Mother is the Shakti, or female aspect of the Divine Father, Shiva. She is the energy that resides

in His heart. She is Divine Grace.

The Great Power that is the cosmic Maya, the Supreme Divine Energy, the Mother Goddess of

Haidakhan embodies the totality of all that is to be known. She is the combined Divine Grace Energy of

the Goddess Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. To worship the Universal Goddess while

we are in this mortal frame gives human life its highest realization. ~Haidakhan Babaji

She is shown with four arms. In Her upper left hand, She holds a conch. This is a symbol of the sound of cre-

ation, and therefore, of Her creative powers. In Her upper right hand is a chakra, a weapon with jagged edges

that cuts like a sword. It is She, the loving Mother, who protects Her children from enemies, both outer and

inner. She holds a mace in her lower left hand, a symbol of authority. Her lower right hand is always extend-

ed in a gesture of blessing to all those who come to Her. To worship the Divine Mother is very high practice.

She bestows all blessings and prosperity.

Gayatri Mantra

Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ

Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ

Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi

Dhiyo Yonaḥ Prachodayāt

Gayatri is the Mother of all scriptures (Vedas). She is present, wherever

Her name is chanted. She is very powerful. The One who nourishes the

individual being is Gayatri. She bestows pure thoughts on anyone who

worships Her. She is the embodiment of all Goddesses. Our very breath is

Gayatri, our faith in existence is Gayatri. Gayatri has five faces, they are

the five life principles. She has nine descriptions, they are ‘Om, Bhur,

Bhuvah, Swah, Tat, Savitur, Vareñyaṃ, Bhargo, Devasya’. Mother Ga-

yatri nourishes and protects every being and she channels our senses in

the proper direction. ‘Dhīmahi’ means meditation. We pray to her to in-

spire us with good intelligence. ‘Dhīyo Yonah Prachodayāt’ - We beseech

her to bestow on us everything we need. Thus Gayatri is a complete pray-

er for protection, nourishment and finally, liberation.

Śiva asked:

O Divine Mother! You are easily accessible to your devotees. Tell us an easy way

to accomplish success in all undertakings in the kāli age.

The Mother replied:

Lord, I shall reveal the ‘Prayer to the Mother’ which enables one to attain suc-

cess in all undertakings. This mantra or prayer was ‘seen’ by Nārāyana. It has

Māhākali, Māhālakshmi and Māhāsarsasvati as deities. (It is recited for their

propitiation.)

1. It is the Divine mother who spreads the veil of illusion over the hearts of even

the wise men.

2. O Mother Durga! You rob us of our fear when we contemplate you. You be-

stow wisdom on us. You are the cosmic benefactress. Who else can remove our

poverty, sorrow and fear?

3. Salutations to Nārāyani who is supreme auspiciousness, the bestower of suc-

cess and the refuge of all.

4. Salutations to Nārāyani who is devoted to the redemption of everyone who

takes refuge in her.

5. Mother! You are all these names and forms. You are the supreme controller

and omnipotent. Free us from fear.

6. You destroy all our diseases when you are pleased. You destroy our desires. He

who resorts to you comes to no grief.

7. Mother, this is our only prayer; may no one in all the worlds experience pain or

sorrow. Save us from our (inner) enemies.

Om Tat Sat

Bhavanyashtakam

O Mother Divine! Father, Mother, Husband, Wife, Children and Friends

– None of these are eternally mine. Knowledge, intellect, mind and will

power are also not eternal. O Mother of the universe - You are my only

saviour, my eternal refuge.

O Mother Divine! I have fallen in the ocean of birth and death, and I fear

their sorrows. I am trapped by my ego, with its countless desires, greed,

pride and lust. O Mother of the universe - You are my only saviour, my

eternal refuge.

O Mother of the universe - I do not know how to come close to you. I

do not know any form of puja, or prayers, or how to worship you at all.

Help me, O Mother Divine - You are my only saviour, my eternal ref-

uge.

I do not know how to be righteous or find your abode. I do not know

how to achieve freedom by dissolving my ego. I am devoid of the will to

fight; I surrender. I am not strong enough to make any vow.

O Mother of the universe - You are my only saviour, my eternal refuge.

My mind is always engaged in worthless thoughts and actions. My intel-

lect has become dull, enslaved by old habits. I am unable to behave hon-

ourably and my intentions are self-serving. My speech is harsh and hurt-

ful. Save me, O Mother of the universe - You are my only saviour, my

eternal refuge.

Oh Goddess Supreme ! Brahman, Vishnu, Maheshwara, Indra, Chandra

or Surya I do not know. O Mother of the universe, you are known for

your compassion. You are my only saviour, my eternal refuge.

O compassionate Mother, please protect me always, in debate and in

danger, in excitement and grief, at home and in alien lands, amidst water

and fire, on mountain and forest, among enemies, everywhere, and in all

places. O Mother of the universe - You are my only saviour, my eternal

refuge.

O Mother, I feel like an orphan on this Earth, powerless and without in-

ner wealth, deluded by ignorance and unable to see the light of truth. O

Mother of the universe - You are my only saviour, my eternal refuge.
