  • What intrigued me about a career in the RSN was that it gave me the opportunity to work closely with people from all walks of life. Unlike the more traditional hierarchical structure youll find in most military organisations, youd be surprised to find that the RSN is vibrant and more inclusive, with a flatter decision making structure. This has given me the opportunity to embrace the differences amongst people and harness such diversity to build stronger and lasting teams.

My exposure wasnt just limited to our people. During my various appointments, Ive had the opportunity to represent our country as an ambassador to other countries during port calls. Ive had the opportunity to understand American culture better while operating from the US Naval Base of San Diego, as well as Chinese culture, while working with the Chinese Task Force as the Commander of the SAF Task Group that embarked on counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden in 2012.

I am also constantly exposed to various environments. In my 22-year career, Ive gone from training the crew of a single ship (the RSS Stalwart frigate) to operate the newly acquired Seahawk helicopters from the ship, to working on broader strategic issues during my HQ appointments. Currently, I am in charge of training and preparing our frigates.

In short, the RSN provides you with a challenging and fast paced environment. You will be constantly tested mentally and you will learn to make sound decisions that affect lives and equipment. Most importantly, you will make lifelong friends whom you know you can depend on for your life.

  • For the longest time, I thought Id be a lawyer when I grew up. But in JC2, it dawned on me that I didnt want a deskbound job. I wanted excitement and fun. This was why I joined the Republic of Singapore Navy.

From the moment I joined, my career has been exciting. During my Midshipman training, I got to sail around the world on a Landing Ship Tank, to places such as New York, Halifax, and Alexandria. The adventure didnt just stop there. Im now the Executive Officer on RSS Archer (submarine). Essentially, Im playing the same role as Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide. However, I cant tell you what sort of adventures we embark on when we sail our submarines, or else I would have to shoot you (I am kidding, of course).

The life of challenges and adventure as well as the opportunities to see the world have made me a well-rounded person. I am trained to be versatile, and to handle pressure. I must say I am both mentally and physically stronger ever since I joined the RSN.

But through it all, you wont do it alone. You will find that you have a new warm family outside your home: the Navy family. In fact, growing up in a big family, this family spirit was one of the things that I found attractive about the RSN. And working in such an environment with a strong sense of camaraderie has moulded me to appreciate the outstanding people around me.

When I was choosing a career, I wanted a dynamic and exciting career, not a deskbound job. This was why I chose to pursue a career with the Republic of Singapore Navy. Fresh from pursuing my Masters at the University of Nottingham (as an SAF Merit Scholarship recipient), I was made a Navigation Officer of the RSS Persistence (Landing Ship Tank), which is a great responsibility for someone of a young age. But it didnt stop there. Every two years or so, I get the chance to move to a new appointment, which provides me with the opportunity to gain more exposure and constantly challenge myself to be a better leader.

Soon, I saw myself grow both as a leader and as a person. Through various deployments that took me to places around the globe, ranging from Muscat to Djibouti, as well as various meaningful missions, ranging from Ops Flying Eagle in Meulaboh, where we provided humanitarian aid and disaster relief in the aftermath of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, to Ops Blue Sapphire (Maritime) in 2010 and 2011, where we supported counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, I grew to be more patient and level-headed.

But beyond the opportunities to see places I would never have had the chance to visit on my own, as well as the various meaningful deployments and appointments, what I love the most about the Navy is the family-like environment. The people in the Navy are like your family away from home. And as a leader of these people, I have learnt that my actions and decisions have the power to influence and change lives.
