Here’s a great way to appreciate themoorland fringe of the North York Moors, combined with the delightful village ofOsmotherley
OsmotherleyOsmotherley’s trademarkappearance is a picture post-card scene of a market crossand stone table on the smallvillage green at the T-junctionof its two main roads. It hasbeen a haven for holiday-makers and day trippers forover a hundred years andboasts three pubs, a café anda walking shop to satisfy activevisitors. One of the highlightsof the village year is theholding of the OsmotherleySummer Games.
Hambleton Drove RoadWhen you walk the tranquilroad near Chequers it is hardto imagine how busy theHambleton Drove Road would
have been in its heyday in the18th and 19th Centuries. Manycattle and even geese, some-times with felt pads to protecttheir feet, were driven alongthis route from Scotland toYorkshire towns and someeventually to London.
Moorland Path RestorationAt the start of your walk youwill follow stone slabs andsteps that were part of anaward winning scheme of pathrestoration in the 1990s. In allabout 8 miles of the ClevelandWay was restored followingextensive damage caused bywalking on the vulnerable peatsurface. This section won anaward for the quality of workcarried out to blend thesurfacing into the naturalsurroundings.
