Hello everyone. We, the employees at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club want to wish you a Happy New Year. We want to thank all the members for their generosity this year, it is very much appreciated and we will continue serving you and going the extra mile for our members,

“because we care” and you are an extension of our family from one generation to another. We are so sorry to hear the loss of our past Commodore Jerry Thompson. Jerry was loved

by our staff and also by all members of the club. Jerry will be missed at the Club and we send ourprayers to the family.

We are almost at the end of the year and ABYC had a great 2014. We are looking foranother great year in 2015 with many regattas on the way, and many other social functions.

We hired a cook from the Long Beach Culinary School, who is very proud to be a part ofour team and will take care of Galley making excellent breakfast, lunch, and food for special occasion under my guidance.Let’s welcome Higinio.

We are working on a brand new menu for the Galley beginning the New Year. Our new menu will include freshingredients for breakfast, lunch, customized menus for regattas and special occasions. We are looking forward to seeing allthe members and their friends and family in 2015 for a new exciting sailing year and great food at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

Thank you!Andre Fournier

As your Commodore it is never easy to deliver news of the passing of a fellow member, especially a Staff Commodore. My memories of Jerry came about 15 or so years ago while sailing against Jerry and Neil Baker in the Cal 20. Boy what an awesome pair they

were sailing LOLO, then to later witness Jerry racing the sabot in the bay making it look so easyand seamless, while he sailed around me and the entire fleet absolutely kicking our butt! I feelso fortunate to not only compete against Jerry but to be his friend. There are going to becountless precious stories about Jerry that will surface, and I want to hear them all. He had anamazing life, full of passion for what we all cherish, which is being with friends and family on thewater messing around on boats. Sail on JT!

I asked Staff Commodore Jeff Merrill if he would add a few words to my column about the passing of JerryThompson, here is what Jeff sent me:

“We are all sad with the recent loss of Jerry Thompson. A true original, “JT” was one of the good guys who cut histeeth sailing sabots on Alamitos Bay and went on to sail Snipes all over the world where he befriended countless sailorsand influenced several generations – always flying the ABYC burgee. Jerry was the longest tenured staff commodore atABYC and was an active volunteer and sailor right to the end. From a personal view point, Jerry was like a second fatherto my brother Scott and me growing up at the Club, there are a lot of stories that we can tell and most of you reading thiscan probably tell a few of your own (some best left unsaid as there are unknown statutes and, well, things were different inthe ‘70’s). //:0) A huge smile (whether under the famous mustache or not) and very bright eyes, Jerry was “cool” beforemost of us knew what cool was. An Icon, a legend, a good friend and an incredible sailor – someone who was alwayssharing ideas and helping other sailors - it will be hard to drive down the peninsula and not think about his impact. Wewere all lucky to have him in our lives for so long and time ultimately gives each of us a chance to cross the finish line singlehandedly… in Jerry’s case I’m sure he was in first place and at least one leg ahead of the rest of the fleet.”

The ABYC staff would like to thank all the members who contributed to the Staff Christmas Fund. It is greatlyappreciated and makes our Christmas brighter. We would also like to thank the Officers and Directors for a greatyear and look forward to an even better 2015. ABYC is the place to be!

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday and the coming year filled with PROSPERITY,GOOD HEALTH & HAPPINESS!

A heartfelt THANK YOUABYC Staff

Step 1

Happy happy holidays to all! Not much has happened scene Turkey Day except, the wonderful Club Christmas Party, Many Fleet Christmas Parties and the Naples Boat Parade (which for the second year in

a row ABYC won the award for the best use of the theme)! All these great thing happen with thesupport and planning of many volunteers – thank you to all of those that put your time intomaking this season spectacular!

I have had some people question the need to place the bases on their sawhorses or keepthe yellow doughnut under their front trailer wheels. Last week I walked the yard looking forboats out of place or in place that should notbe in the yard. Please remember that if you

have a boat in the yard it MUST have a office assigned sticker on it andit needs to be in the correct spot. Boats found without stickers will beimpounded and charged a penalty as well as a daily storage fee! But Idigress (sugar has taken its toll), I notice trailers with flat tires, boatswith no doughnut under the front wheel and boats that looked more likebird baths following the rains. But the most disturbing thing I found wasdamage to the new blacktop! Please take a look at the photo, that wastaken in the first row of dinghies!

Please remember ALL sawhorses must have the spreaderbases in place by February 1st or sooner, or they will be upgraded foryou at a steep price -

I hope every member of ABYC and their families will have hada good holiday –

Latham Bell

Fellow Sailors –Tis the season to visit with family and friends, go to parties, shop, eat, drink and do justabout everything other than race a sailboat. Well I guess we need to spend a few weeks

each year with someone other than our crew and fellow ABYC members. This is the time wherewe try to show everyone that we really do have a good “work/life-balance”. But Do Not Despair! We only have to wait until two days after Christmas this year to go get the gift we really want! That’s right the Boxing Day Regatta falls on Saturday, the 27th this year. This is a fun and somewhatirreverent event. Per the NOR, “All boats, especially those that float, with a Portsmouth yardstick”,

are invited. “For boats not having a Portsmouth yardstick one will be invented.” If you are not sure that you will becompetitive, check out the picture from therace last year. I don’t think this boat won butthey are obviously having a good time!

Now that I have totally lost myaudience I want to move onto a more serioussubject. If you remember, my last articlefocused on our fleet of whalers and all thework that is being done to keep them inshape. To help shift the whaler campaigninto even higher gear we are planning awhaler maintenance day, on Saturday,January 24th. If you feel like getting dirty andsweaty with a bunch of old guys, pleasecome down and join the fun. You show upwith work clothes and we will supplyeverything else you need, including FREEBEER! What? Please contact Chuck Hardin,Dave Crockett Sr., or Kevin Brown if you canhelp.

On a final note, next month I will have some additional really good news about the whalers! Stay tuned for thatupdate which will hopefully include pictures.

This past December my skipper Jack Hogan and I spent a lot of time sailing the C420 in the SCYYRA Clinic and at thePerry held at SDYC. Both of these events really helped me to learn a lot about C420 sailing and were lots of fun. TheSCYYRA Clinic was held just down the street from ABYC at the US Sailing Center. It was really awesome to have all

of the best youth sailors from Southern California together to learn go fast tips and to share laughs. The 420s were luckenough to be coached by US Sailing Team member Briana Provancha, Adam Roberts, Kevin Laube, and ABYC’s very ownAllie Blecher. We worked a lot on straight-line boat speed, gybes downwind, and communication. I felt a lot faster after theSCYYRA clinic, and Jack and I were ready for the Perry the following weekend.

Unfortunately we did not perform as well as we wanted to at the Perry, but we learned a lot sailing in San Diego.Because of the extremely light winds forecasted we had an hour tow out to the race course by Coronado. It was extremelydifficult to sail there because of how shifty it was. The 420 fleet is extremely competitive and made it tough to get a goodstart on the line, it didn’t help that the course was extremely short. We were able to get 5 races off on Saturday and then onSunday we were finally able to sail in the ocean. It was even lighter than Saturday probably 5 knots maximum and they werelarge rolly waves left over from Friday’s storm. We got 2 races off and finished top to mid-fleet in both of the races whichwas a good finish to a difficult weekend of sailing. Also congrats to fellow ABYC Junior Riley Gibbs and his crew Kyle Blairwho finished 4th overall at the Perry. I learned a lot about 420 sailing in December and can’t wait to spend more time in the420 learning more about the boat.

party 2014christmas

What better way to end the year than with a great Christmas party? Thedinner exceeded everyone’s expectations thanks to Andre and theABYC staff. The party wouldn’t have been such a success without the

adult volunteers and juniors. I really appreciated all their support. There was so much excitement when Santa entered the room

and children really enjoyed spending time with him! They were given speciallittle gifts and then made their way to the junior room, where they had fun makingcraft projects.

Adults and children alike enjoyed the treats at the candy bar (althoughI think I had more enjoyment setting it up).

Thank you again to everyone for making the party such a warm andinviting experience and as we all well know, ABYC is the place to be!

Gibbs brothers start last, finish firstThe hometown Gibbs brothers—Riley, 18, and Sawyer, 16—started last in their 49er skiff but passed all of the other boatsof various types to finish first in Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s annual

Boxing Day race in brilliant sun but cool light air Saturday. The pursuit race, in which the slowest-rated boats start first

followed at several intervals working up through faster boats, was on theinner bay fronting the club, twice around for about two miles.

There were 59 boatsand many different classes, six of which finished in thetop 10 and nine of whichdidn’t bother to finish at all.The Gibbs’s only error wasstarting a minute earlyahead of their assignedtime.

“We did?” Riley saidwhen informed of the mistake afterward. “I didn’t know we were early.”

No matter. Event chairperson and principal race officer Mark Townsendsaid, “Nobody said anything and I didn’t blow a horn.”

And it hardly affected the outcome. The Gibbs started alone and obviouslyhad the fastest boat, even in the wispy southwesterly that built from 5 to 8knots as the chase proceeded. Their boat handling through many spinnakersets and gibes was flawless.Their last challenger was ABYC veteran Chris Raab, a two-time winner of

this event and several national and international competitions in variousclasses. This time he sailed a Lido 14 and started 25 minutes ahead of theGibbs and had passed everyone else on the second lap when they closedin at the windward mark inthe channel off the bay.“I’m winning!” Raab

shouted hilariously as heapproached the buoy, “I’mwinning!”—knowing it wasonly seconds before the

Gibbs followed him around and breezed by, 20 minutes from their finish fiveminutes ahead.

Riley Gibbs had sailed other boats in several Boxing Day races butsaid, “I’ve never been first. It seems we had the right boat this time.”

Sawyer said it was his first race on a 49er, although he had wonevents in Lido 14 and Cal 20 junior classes this year.

Riley has higher ambitions: an Olympic campaign as crew for ZackDowning that will carry them through a series of qualifying events leading to2016 at Rio de Janeiro.

One thing he knows: it won’t be as easy as Sunday.Rich Roberts, [email protected]

The Fleet to Be In!

Cal 20 sailors enjoyed a busy and festivemonth in December to wrap up the 2014season. Activities included the Fun Run

regatta, the annual Fleet 1 Holiday Party, and theinfamous Boxing Day Regatta.

Long Beach Yacht Club hosted the Fun Runregatta on Dec. 13. This is the one day where Cal 20’s enjoytight tactical racing inside Alamitos Bay. LBYC ran six collegiatestyle races which put an emphasis on good starts and smarttactics. Racing was held under bright blue skies and brisk autumnconditions with nine boats participating. Chris Raab’s summerLido 14 campaign and time racing inside the bay paid bigdividends as he sailed a very consistent series to come in first.Rounding out the top five were Stan Gibbs (2nd), Stu Robertson(3rd), Keith Ives (4th), and Fleet Captain Steve George (5th). It

was great to see Jerry Montgomery out on Heatwave with his regularcrew of Bob Anderson and Dave Kofahl. The following week we held the Cal 20 Holiday Party at Keith Ives

lovely home in Alamitos Heights. Keith along with his girlfriend Tina, his crew Chuck Stevens, and Chuck’s wife Alicia wife hosted a joyousparty with plentiful spirits, live music, and a delicious Italian dinner.Everyone had a great time and enjoyed each other’s company.Five Cal 20’s came out for Boxing Day with Keith Ives and Chuck

Stevens placing first amongst the Cal 20’s and eighth overall. JuniorStaff Commodore Jennifer Kuritz sailing with her husband Steveand her Dad John Ellis came in ninth right behind Rubber Dog. Weappreciate the good work of fellow fleet members Mark and RobinTownsend for organizing the Boxing Day race.On a sad note, we will dearly miss our friend and fellow Cal 20

sailor Jerry Thompson. Our best wishes are with the Thompsonfamily.

Boxing Day Race After a one year hiatus due to the yacht basin, docks and dinghy launch ramp refurbishment in 2013, the Boxing Day Race was back with 59 entries. Eight Lasers and one Radial turned out to

race in Alamitos Bay on a bright sunny but cool Saturday. With a reverse handicap starting sequence, the first boats started the race at 12:40 with a Radial start at 1:24 and Lasers at 12:30. In the light air, it was going to be achallenge to sail through a forest of 17 Lidos plus assorted Cal 20’s and Mercury’s that had started before us.

Getting a good start, Alan Peoples and I were leading at the first mark located in the channel adjacent to LongBeach YC, followed closely by ABYC Laser Fleet newcomer, Dean Stanec and Ed Feo. For the next few marks, Alanextended his lead with Ed, Dean and me in hot pursuit. Gradually, Ed skillfully and patiently worked his way through theother classes to catch and pass Alan, never to look back. With the light breeze, tactical encounters with larger boats andthe always tricky and shifty conditions on the Bay, the Laser group was spread out across the race course. Following Ed inorder were; Alan, your author, Dean, Michael Kramer, another Laser Fleet newcomer, Jack Johnson, Mike Corzine fromLBYC, Susan Lanoue, on her Radial and two other fleet newcomers, Hailey and Samantha Thompson. It was amusingto watch Samantha giving Hailey tactical advice standing on the foredeck of their Laser maneuvering for the start.Laser & Radial Clinic and Races January 24th

The ABC Laser Fleet is conducting a clinic and races for all Laser and Radial racers on Saturday January 24th.We plan to start by helping anyone with rigging and set-up tips at 9:00 a.m. along with a chalk talk on tactics, starting, etc.,before starting races on the Bay around noon. We plan to conduct as many short races as practical with a follow up sessionback on shore. There will be a $10.00 entry fee to cover the cost of whaler rental and gas.We hope to see you there!

Rules - 44.2, FinishA boat finishes when any part of her hull, or crew orequipment in normal Position, crosses the finishing line

from the course side. Therefore Blue finishes at position 1 andagain at position 6. Yellow finishes at position 5. Blue does notfinish when she crosses the finish line at position 5 as she doesnot cross the finishing line from the course side.

The Race Committee should record the finish positionsas Blue, Yellow, Blue. Blue would be scored in her secondfinishing position.

Rule 44.2 requires Blue to get well clear of other boatsas soon after the incident as possible, take a One-Turn Penaltyby promptly making one turn in the same direction, each turnincluding one tack and one gybe. By taking the penalty abovethe line she completes One-Turn Penalty promptly. There is no requirement to sail completely to the course side of the linebefore taking her penalty. Blue must sail completely to the course side of the line before finishing, which she does. Bluetakes the penalty in accordance with the rule.

The protest committee should disallow Yellow’s protest.Mark Townsend

Rules - Racing, IRPCASA boat is racing from her preparatory signal until she finishes and clears the finishing line and marks or retires, oruntil the race committee signals a general recall, postponement or abandonment. As the collision occurred before

the warning signal, the Cardinal colored boat is not racing and not governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing. However, sheis required to comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCAS) or government right-of-way rules.

Under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCAS) the anchored Race CommitteeSignal Boat is a vessel “not under command”. The Cardinal colored boat breaks rule 18 of the IRPCAS, which states “Asailing vessel must give way to a vessel not under command.”
