IntroductionTwo big things come to mind as I look back on the past year. One is the huge
splash that ABYC and our sailors made at the Sail Canada Rolex Sailor of the Year Awards in March.
Our junior sailing school won the William Abbott Sr. Trophy for Sail Training Program of the Year. Congratulations to JSS Director Jeff Dejean, head Instructor Stewart Bott, and all the staff, volunteers, and students who have contributed to building our school. And Hunter Dejean was co-winner of the Bill Burk Memorial
Youth Elite Award, which recognizes two outstanding 18-and-under sailors. She was first of 125 sailors in the Laser Radial Class at CORK International and went on to be the Canadian representative in her class at the Youth Worlds in Corpus Christi, Texas. And Clara Gravely, who was co-winner of the Ashbridge Trophy as a youth sailor in 2017, won the Nathan R Cowan Award for Developing Sailors. This award is for accomplishment by a sailor who is 19 or over and is not (yet) a member of the national team. Clara won the laser radial class at the CORK Olympic Classes Regatta and finished 20th at the under-21 Laser Worlds, 25th at Kiel Week, and 70th of 120 at her first World Championships. AND Sarah Douglas
won the Skipper’s Plan Female Athlete of the Year Award! Sarah was 6th overall at the Hempel Sailing World Championships, 6th at the Enoshima World Cup, 2nd at the North American Championships, etc. She qualified Canada for a spot in the women’s radial class at the 2020 Olympics and she will represent Canada at the Pan Am games in Peru this summer.
The other big thing is the huge amount of volunteer work that we (the members) did over the winter and are still doing to improve our facilities and keep everything running. Despite heroic efforts to keep the bubbler system going, some dock pilings were lifted by the ice. Repairs are under way and are expected to be finished by launch. New floating finger docks are being installed on white wall. We have new sheet piling along the mast crane wall and we are putting in new gravel, wiring, water, etc ourselves to finish off that project. The interior of the clubhouse got a much-needed facelift. And much more.
Looking ahead, we have a full keelboat racing schedule on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and weekends, plus dinghy racing on Wednesdays. Wendy Loat has completely rewritten our Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions. They now follow the format recommended by Sail Canada and I think they are much easier to read. Last August a new fibre optic cable from Wilson NY to Woodbine Beach happened to go through the eastern edge of our racecourse. To avoid the risk of hooking the cable with the Sarah Ashbridge’s anchor, we have shifted the racecourse to the southwest. SO – IF YOU ARE GOING TO RACE THIS YEAR, READ THIS BOOK, AND HAVE A COPY ON BOARD. The ABYC regatta on May 25-26 will feature a PHRF course again; PLEASE come out so the Commodore won’t be asked to wear a Wiener suit again! The ABYC Opti regatta will be on July 27-28 this year to avoid conflicting with the Opti Canadians in Ottawa. We have a full schedule of club cruises. Early registration for adult learn-to-sail and co-op keelboat shows there is a lot of enthusiasm for those programs. There will be a lot of social activity, organized and otherwise, as usual.
And finally, the Commodore’s Ball will be on June 7 and Sailpast will be on June 8 this year. This is one week earlier than last year. Howard and Celia will NOT be there to greet you if you show up a week early for the ball.
Have a great season!

General Considerations
SafetyThe safety of a boat and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the owner/skipper, who must ensure that the boat is seaworthy, adequately manned, and fully equipped for the type of boating activities proposed. The skipper must also ensure that adequate emergency and safety equipment is carried, and that the crew is familiar with its location and use.As a minimum, all boats registered in the club fleet must be equipped in accordance with the Small Vessel Regulations of the Canada Shipping Act. The Safe Boating Giude can be downloaded as a pdf at http://www.tc.gc.ca, under the Marine tab, Marine Saftey. In addition all boats should carry a VHF radio. Those intending to do any offshore or overnight sailing should upgrade their emergency and safety equipment accordingly.
MembershipSkippers are reminded that people who are not members but who sail regularly on ABYC boats should join the Club as Members.
Licenses and PermitsAll individuals operating vessels equipped with an engine within the Toronto Harbour Area (Bluffers Park to Humber River) are required to hold a Toronto Harbour License. Contact the Toronto Port Authority for details. All skippers are also required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). Information on obtaining this card can be found at www.tc.gc.ca under the Marine tab. The operator of a VHF radio is required to have a Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime).
Officer of The DayFor incoming cruises and other special events such as regattas, we need friendly, helpful ABYC members to welcome and assist guests. Please contact the Fleet Captain Cruising, or the Rear Commodore, if you can help. During the summer, OOD duties are performed by the Bosun and yard staff, but if you see a visitor arrive after hours, don’t hesitate to offer assistance. A binder with sign-in sheets and visitor information brochures is available at the bar.
Overnight AbsenceFiling a Sail Plan if you are away from your berth overnight is required by Club bylaw. You can file your Sail Plan online in the member’s area of our website, or paper forms are available at the gas dock. The logging of your destination and time of return is for security purposes, and allows visitors to use the empty slip you have vacated.
Racing Crew BankABYC’s annual Racing Crew Bank Night is an informative social evening (on the EventsCalendar), designed to introduce novice and seasoned sailors to our Racing Crew Bank racing program. The website has a direct link to our Racing Crew Bank coordinator.
Work HoursThe Club expects Senior members to contribute a minimum of 25 work hours, excluding launch and haulout, with a work or pay option. Dinghy members are expected to contribute 5 work hours. Saturday morning work parties (9 to noon, from haulout to launch) are a great way to get involved in the Club and to get to know your fellow members. Committee work and work parties involve race
9
committee, clubhouse, yard and harbour maintenance, club operations, club boat and dinghy repairs, special projects, and the full-attendance work parties.
Ship2ShoreTo subscribe to Ship2Shore, visit www.abyc.ca. The deadline for submitting articles for Ship2Shore is Noon (1200 hr) on the Tuesday of each week. Articles should be sent to [email protected]. Questions and comments regarding Ship2Shore should be sent to [email protected]

Send your articles to [email protected] with ‘For ABYC News’ in the subject. If you are not receiving ABYC News, we may have the incorrect email address on file. Please contact [email protected] to update your primary email address.
Being GreenABYC Sailors are reminded of the ‘Environmental Responsibility’ principle to minimize the environmental impact of our sport. Rule 55 allows a boat to protest another if so much as a cigarette butt is thrown in the water.
Flag EtiquetteIt is desirable that, for a member’s boat to be moored in our harbour, it shall be maintained in good condition, reflect pride of ownership and be a credit to the club. Flag etiquette forms a part of this pride and if a flag is worth hoisting at all, then it should be done properly. Flags, therefore, should be in good condition. This section provides general guidelines of flag etiquette for club members. Flags are usually displayed between morning and evening colours. Morning colours are made at 0800 hours (8 a.m.). Evening colours are made at the earlier of sunset and 2100 hours (9 p.m.).
The National Flag of Canada
This flag, also known as the ensign, is the senior flag, and should be the first raised and the last struck. The flag should be flown from a staff on the stern. It should be displayed between morning and evening colours (it may be struck earlier, if the boat will be unattended at evening colours). With the exception of unmanned boats, the flag may be lowered before sunset. The flag should be approximately one inch in the fly per foot of overall boat length.
Association and House Flags
Association, such as Power Squadron, and house flags are flown, only one at a time, from the starboard signal halyard. An exception to this is when flying a courtesy flag, when the association and house flags should be flown on the port spreader halyard.
Visiting Ports Of Other Nations
Between morning and evening colours, when at anchor, or underway, the foreign national colours are displayed at the foremost starboard spreader, or by mastless boat, at the bow staff. The boat’s ensign should be flown at the same time.
Burgee
ABYC has several burgees. They are the Club, Flag Officer, Past Commodore and Life Member burgees. The burgees other than the Club are only flown when the corresponding official is aboard or, in the general vicinity of the boat when at a mooring.
10
The other burgees are flown in lieu of, but in the same fashion as the Club burgee. The burgee is flown from a staff at the masthead of the mainmast of a sailing boat. If the masthead position is not practical, then the alternative acceptable position is on the starboard spreader signal halyard. On a powerboat, the burgee is flown from the bow staff. A burgee should be flown at the same time as the ensign, but alsomay be flown on its own day or night when at sea. The burgee may be flown at any time when the member/owner is aboard or in the general vicinity of the boat when it is moored. The owner can only fly a burgee of a club of which he is a member. If the owner is a member of more than one club, then he shall fly only the one of his choice for the particular occasion.
Dressing Ship and Prize Flags
It is the custom in our area for boats to dress ship after regattas, racing events and special club functions such as Sail Past. When so requested or indicated boats should be so dressed, but only when in port between morning and evening colours. Good form for code flags is indicated by a display of visually pleasing sequence, such as AB2, UJ1, KE3, GH6, IV5, FL4, DM7, PO third substitute, RN first substitute, ST0, CX9, WQ8 and ZY second substitute. There is no specific order for the arrangement of prize flags. It must be noted that racing prize flags belong to a specific boat. Flags won with some other boat should not be flown, even if won by the same owner.
Clubhouse Main Flagpole
ABYC’s main flagstaff is intended to resemble the aft most mast of a gaff-rigged vessel standing out to sea, and the colours displayed accordingly. The flag is flown from the gaff peak with the Club burgee displayed on a staff at the masthead. The national flag of a boat visiting from another country is flown from the starboard yardarm. The port yardarm is used for signaling.
Mourning
Mourning is indicated by flying the flag at half-mast. When hoisting the flag to half mast, the flag is fully hoisted, then lowered to the half-mast position. When striking a half-mast flag, the flag is first fully hoisted, then lowered. Should the Club enter mourning, due to a member’s death, the flag shall be flown at half-mast during the daylight hours from the time the news is received until the conclusion of the funeral service. If the news is received during the dark hours, then the mourning shall be signalled commencing the next day.
11
Cruising ProgramThe Cruising Program is open to all members and is a long-standing tradition at
ABYC. It is a great way to get to know other club members, make new friends, and visit various ports on the lake. The information contained in the Events Book provides a brief overview. If you are interested in learning more, please visit the club’s website: abyc.ca/Cruising
The program typically includes a dozen or more events each summer with destinations for cruisers of all experience levels (sail and power). The season opens with an afternoon ‘boat optional’ event on the other side of our club’s harbour, and then continues with one or two-night weekend cruises to yacht clubs or anchorages. For the more adventurous the season may include a ‘1000 Islands Rendezvous’ of ABYC boats. Most of the cruises are reciprocal, with our cruisers travelling to a club, and their cruisers travelling to ABYC.
Detailed information will be posted in Ship2Shore (S2S) so make sure you subscribe! The most current and up-to-date list of scheduled cruises will be found on the website Events Calendar. Cruises listed in this Events Book may not be complete and are subject to change.
Cruising Captains and Cruise Hosts
The Cruising Captains organize and communicate the schedule for the season, share general information, resolve issues, and answer general questions ([email protected]). Most cruises will have cruise hosts, who plan, co-ordinate and communicate the details of the cruise to those registered for the cruise, host the cruise reception, and answer questions about their specific cruise.
A Typical Cruise
1 Register for a cruise when registration opens and up until the Tuesday midnight before the cruise. See details below.
2 Know where you are going and plan your route. Research the destination in the PORTS Cruising Guide to Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands. or an equivalent publication. Take a copy with you when you go! Host Club websites provide useful information for first-time visitors.
3 If your plans change and you can’t participate, cancel as far as possible in advance. See details below.
4 Receive email communication pertaining to the cruise including confirmation of your status on the cruise (‘participant list’ or ‘wait list’) and cruise details beginning 7 to 10 days before the date of the cruise.
5 Monitor your emails for ongoing communication from the hosts including the day of the cruise.
6 Provision for the cruise. A dinner will usually be provided by the hosts the first evening but you will need to provision for the rest of your meals. Some Host Clubs do provide restaurant and bar service but this is not the norm.
7 Attend Skippers Meeting in the clubhouse if scheduled, hosts will notify partici-pants.
8 Departure day, everyone should leave the docks by 1100h to make room for inbound cruisers. There may be flexibility to go later, talk to the bosuns. If the weather is marginal, check with the hosts before you go.
9 Hoist the Burgee! You are representing ABYC, and should have the burgee flying for the duration of the cruise.
12
10 Travel to destination. Some people like to take their own tack; others will plan to travel together and maintain contact with each other while on the water. Once you have established communication with other members of your fleet on VHF Ch 16, be sure to choose a different VHF channel to use while underway.
11 Arrival. Many Host Clubs will provide us with pre-assigned slps but these assignments are subject to change so please confirm your dock assignment when approaching the Host Club on VHF Ch 68. The hosts will be also be monitoring VHF Ch 68 (once they arrive) and docking assistance may be available but ask if you are in need of help. Sign in with the Host Club … don’t forget your membership card.
12 Now the fun starts! Typically there will be a reception with a meal on the day of arrival. You may wish to contribute a pre-dinner appetizer or an after-meal dessert but this is optional. Participants provide their own utensils, plates, napkins and beverages. Everyone assists with clean up. The cruise may be ‘themed’ with activities, costumes, contests … your hosts will advise.
13 Departure. Plan to leave dock by 1100h. Talk to the Host Club Dock Master if you’d like to stay longer. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance to leave the dock.
14 Travel home. Again, hail other members of your cruising fleet on VHF Ch 16 and choose a different VHF channel to keep in touch on your way home.
15 Arrival at home. Sometimes, your slip may still be occupied if an inbound cruiser is delayed in their departure or if you are returning earlier than 1100 a.m. Contact ABYC Bosun staff on VHF Ch 68 to request a temporary slip assignment or to determine when your slip will be vacated.
How to Register
Members self register for cruises through the ABYC website (after login go to Cruising > Cruising Signup). A member who registers for the same cruise a second time will ‘overwrite’ the first registration (day and time) and will loose their original placement on the list. A member cannot register another member. An email receipt of registration will be returned to the registrant.
NOTE: this email only confirms successful receipt of registration and does not confirm your status on the cruise e.g. on a wait list.
Cruise registration will open on the first Wednesday of the month preceding the month of the cruise at 0001h (just after midnight). For example, June cruises will open for registration on the first Wednesday of May.
We ask that you register for a cruise when you can commit to attending the cruise and to remove yourself from the cruise as soon as possible if your plans change. Please see Cruise Cancellation below.
Cruise Cancellation
Registrants wishing to cancel their attendance at a cruise must provide e-mail notification to the Cruising Captains ([email protected]) and the host. This cannot be done on the website. Registrants must remove themselves from the cruise as soon as it is known that they will no longer be able to attend the cruise. This includes registrants on the ‘wait list’. This is necessary for three very important reasons: 1. the Yard Supervisor is already planning to designate your slip for an incoming boat and he needs to know that your slip is no longer available 2. Registrants on the ‘wait list’ should have some notice so that they will be able to participate, and 3. Your hosts are purchasing and preparing food for attendees. A $25.00 penalty may be assessed to a member if they cancel their attendance within 48 hours of the scheduled cruise or do not attend the cruise. The decision to charge the penalty is at the discretion of the Cruising Captains. Consideration will be given to bad weather and extenuating circumstances.
13
Lottery Cruises
A ‘lottery cruise’ is a cruise where registrant status on the cruise will be determined by a random draw, not date and time of registration. The Cruising Captains will identify which cruises will be a ‘lottery cruise’. Members will be notified if a cruise is a ‘lottery cruise’ in S2S communication and this will be included in the cruise description on the website. Registration for a ‘lottery cruise’ will remain open for the first day of registration (until 23:59 p.m.) and then will close. All registrations will be entered into a ‘lottery’ and a random draw will be conducted. The ‘registrant list’ for a ‘lottery cruise’ will be posted on the website no later than the following Sunday. Registration may reopen if space remains on the ‘wait list’. Registrants are responsible for checking the posted ‘registrant list’ to identify their status on the cruise. Further details regarding a ‘lottery cruise’ will be posted in the S2S.
Cruise Races
Pursuit style races may be planned for our short to medium distance cruises. The emphasis will be on fun and bragging rights. A generous whitesail PHRF rating will be given to participants who don’t have a certificate. Race details may be included in S2S communications and will be emailed to members registered to these cruises.
Cross-Border Cruising
The schedule may include a US Host Club. Proper documentation and identification is required for the boat and for all persons on board. Boats 30 feet or over are required to display an ‘Annual Customs User Fee Decal’ (apply online at dtops.cbp.dhs.gov then use the private vessel button). Flag etiquette is highly recommended (See General Considerations section in this Events book). The PORTS Cruising Guide to Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands provides helpful information on marine border crossings.

2019 ABYC Club Racing - Notice Of Race
This Notice of Race does not apply to the ABYC Open Regatta, the Donald D. Summerville Memorial Race, Family Races, the Single-Handed Race or the Double-Handed Race.
The notation ‘[DP]’ in a rule in the NoR means that the penalty for a breach of that rule may, at the discretion of the protest committee, be less than disqualification.

ATTENTION RACERS, CRUISERS & ASSOCIATES!
For many years now the ABYC Open, May 26 & 27, has kicked off the season on Lake Ontario setting the tone for a great racing season, and 2019 will be no different!
This is an open invitation to yacht clubs around Lake Ontario, for any members to compete in PHRF, IRC and One Design racing. The racing will follow our traditional 2 day format for racing. The program for PHRF fleets (both Flying and Non Flying Sail will consist of one day course racing, following by one day of distance racing (or both for those who are keen). One design and IRC Fleets will have two days of course racing. All fleets are welcome to attend, and any fleets with 5 boats or more will be granted their own start.
Please be sure to register at www.lorc.org prior to May 14 for the fleets to confirm their own start, and no later than May 21 to avoid the late fee. All skippers who are registered prior to May 14th will have 5 chances to win $100 in food and beverage tickets for the Rock the Dock After Party!
We also invite all racers, cruisers, associate members and their friends to join us for the social aspects of the event. During the day non-racers can join in the fun on one of the spectator boats and cheer for their favourite boat! After the racing on Saturday, the Rock the Dock After Party will host everyone for the racing awards, followed by live music and regatta celebrations starting at 4h30pm. Enjoy music outside with a beautiful view of the harbour from Blair Franklin and headliner band The Test Icicles. Plus $5 beers and mixed drinks and $5 & $10 food options!
We are seeking volunteers to help make this event a success. If you have volun-teered in the past or would like to help this year please let us know.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge the contributions of the sponsors – Core Power High Protein Milk Shakes, Evolution Sails, Garmin, Sunsail Sailing Vacations, Island Canvas, The Rigging Shoppe, Skippers Plan, and Swans Yacht Sales.

16 Insurance16.1 Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance
according to the Club rules.
A Racing Boat’s Obligation to Race Committee
Although there is no mandatory requirement for boats participating in club racing to sign up for Race Committee duty, the crew of a racing boat may be called upon to give emergency backup assistance to the Race Committee for any club race (refer to SI 18). On the weekends, ABYC must find Race Committee personnel for the various events in the racing calendar, some of which are ABYC club events as well as sister clubs’ regattas, for which ABYC runs courses in exchange for assistance they give to our club.
We cannot continue to rely on a small group of dedicated volunteers to run all of these events and we need help from the people who benefit from the high quality of Race Committee management for which ABYC is known. Although weekend Race Committee duty is not mandatory, each racing boat in the fleet will be expected to help with an event. Molly Asseltine, our Race Committee coordinator, will be approaching you to ask for which event(s) you wish to sign up.
This system will only work if everyone steps up to the plate when asked and gives back to the racing program you all enjoy.

9.2 ‘Counter series’ for each division are defined as follows: (a) Division 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5: Evolution, Core Power, C, D, E series and the
Offshore series(b) One Design: Core Power, D series and the Offshore Series.
9.3 A ‘counter series’ will be considered completed only if requisite number of races are completed and three boats have finished at least one race in her division.
9.4 Each boat will be assigned a score for each completed ‘counter series’ according to her overall position within her division for that series (i.e. individual race scores will not be used).
9.5 When four or less ‘counter series’ have been completed in Divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and one design, a boat’s score for her division’s season championship will be the sum of her scores for each ‘counter series’.
9.6 When five ‘counter series’ have been completed for Divisions 1, 2, 4, & 5, a boat’s score for her division season’s championship will be the sum of her scores for each ‘counter series’, excluding her worst score.
9.7 When six ‘counter series’ have been completed for a given division, a boat’s score for her division season’s championship will be the sum of her scores for each ‘counter series’, excluding her 2 worst scores
9.8 For the purpose of the overall trophies, a boat shall be considered for only one trophy. A boat not qualifying to compete in a one design fleet will be deemed to be competing in the weeknight division she races in first. Boats qualifying to compete in a one design fleet will be deemed to be competing in that one design division. Any boat may elect to compete for an overall trophy in another division for which she is qualified, if such election is made in writing to the registrar, prior to the beginning of Series C.
9.9 Scoring for the Divisional Offshore Series:(a) The Divisional Offshore Series will consist of the George Coyles Tune-up
race, the Summer Bell Buoy race, the Archie Walker race, and the Donald D. Summerville Memorial race.
(b) For each race in the Divisional Offshore Series, boats which are competing will be assigned a score based on their position within that Division. Each boat’s total score will be based on the sum of her best four races, unless fewer than four races are completed, in which case all scores will be counted.
10 The John Payne Memorial Trophy and the Elizabeth Kimball Trophy
10.1 To determine the winners of the John Payne Memorial Trophy and the Elizabeth Kimball Trophy: The series will consist of the George Coyles Tune-up Race, the Summer Bell Buoy Race, the Archie Walker Race and the Donald D. Summerville Memorial Race. Boats will be assigned a score based on their overall position in all Spinnaker Divisions combined, or in all JaM Divisions combined. The Donald D Summerville Memorial race will be doubly weighted, which means it will be counted as two races. Each boat’s total score will be based on the sum of her best three races plus the Donald D Summerville Memorial race. If fewer than four races are completed, all scores will be counted.

ABYC Corinthian FundThe Corinthian Fund is available to provide support for ABYC members to
compete at major events away from our home waters. In recent years we have supported a Trans-Atlantic campaign, entries to North American and World events, and Junior sailors in their endeavours flying the ABYC burgee as part of the Canada and Ontario Sailing teams. Members who are interested in applying for support are encouraged to contact the Rear Commodore, [email protected], for advice on funding criteria and guidance on preparing an application.
Many of you have contributed to this fund and its endeavours over the years and we welcome your continuing donations and gifts in memoriam. Unfortunately because adult as well as youth sailors receive Corinthian Fund grants, the CRA does not allow you a tax deduction.
The word “Corinthian” is taken in the sailing world to mean “amateur” and is derived from the Corinthian games in ancient Greece. It was adopted by the sailing community in the late 19th Century – “A Corinthian sailor, we take it, is one capable of managing a craft either single-handed (if she is small enough) or with the assistance of other amateurs, if she is from 5 to 30 tons.” F. Cowper, Sailing Tours Part l: The Coasts of Essex and Suffolk 1892
